In this focus group, I told some of the students in my class the ideas I had in
mind for my final major project. They all seemed interested in my idea 1
(Afterglow by Wilkinson). I think the ideas good because you keep the
continuity the same throughout. Rosie said this quote supporting her reasons
to why she thinks I should do idea 1.
Justification
In this video I asked my peers what idea I should do for my final project. I told
them two music video ideas I thought of, and asked them to discuss and
chose what song and idea I should do. They all thought my idea 1 was the
best. this idea was Afterglow by Wilkinson, they thought the techniques i was
planning to use in this video were good and it will make it engaging. I
personally thought that idea 1 was the best anyway so Im glad they all
thought it was a good idea. I preferred idea 1 because I think it's more
engaging for the audience to watch, this is because its a more upbeat song,
so the clips will be flowing faster than if I were to do idea 2 (Breath - the rap
version) which has a slower beat/ tempo. Not only the fast beat but the
overall idea for my music video idea 1 is a lot better.

Survey
I sent out a survey to get thoughts from
the public to find out a few things like who they think my target audience is,
not only this but how they think I can improve my original idea for my music
video. When I asked the public what gender the audience will be and the
age I found out people think my idea has more of a young adult female
approach, I can agree with them on this because my video is mainly centred
around teenage girls having fun, meaning the biggest audience would be
teenage girls as they would find it more relatable to their lives, and how
similar each teenage girls life is.
The other questions I asked to the public were to do with improving my idea.
I asked questions like how many girls should be in the group, they had to
choose out of 2 5, everyone that responded thought I should have 5 girls in
the group, I personally agree with the publics decision because I can get a
lot more interesting shots. I also asked the public what locations would be
good to film in, the responses I thought would be good were the woods,
beach and abandoned warehouse, I thought these were good responses
because there all uniquely different to each other and would all look good in
my video.
Target audience
As you can see from my survey results, the target audience for my production
is females specifically young adults aged around 15 27 years old. Most of
this gender and age group are into clubbing and listening to dance music, so
my music video can relate to the type of music they enjoy but also the video
might include similar things they do with their friends on a night out making
them relate to the video. Social status of my audience, D because they
might have a part time job this would most likely be ages 16 27 years old
audience. E because they might still be in education unemployed this
would be 15 18year olds in my audience.
Audience Figures
Chart Track GfK Chart Track Is a regulatory body that associates to my final
project idea. A market research company monitors music, videos and
software sales in the UK. The chart track was formed in 1996.
This link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chart-Track will take you to a webpage
that gives more information as to what the chart track do.
Original video
How many views has the original video had? Afterglow has had 57,258,372
views and it was publish 10th September 2013 meaning its had 3 years to gain
this amount of views. Afterglow reached number 8 in UK charts.
Another Wilkinson called Sweet Lies has had 3,723,361 views on their music
video and this video was published over 6 months ago. This could prove that
having a good music video means more views as Wilkinsons song afterglow
has many more views. This song reached number 34 in UK official charts.
How Many record sales? On 21 October 2016, the song was certified as gold
in the United Kingdom for over 400,000 sales.

student, so it has not been aired on any by a student, once again meaning that it
music video channels, the only access to has not been aired on any channels and
it is on YouTube. Its had over 5,000 views the only place it can be found is YouTube
and 125 likes which is amazing for a or the owners website (which wasnt
student. Even though this music video linked anywhere in the description). This
and my idea arent similar, the locations, video contains young ladys dancing and
camera movement and shot are very miming to Beyonc, Run the world. Not
similar to what I have in mind, making me only does this video have the same target
think the only difference this music video audience and age audience, but It
and mine wont look too different, just involves some camera techniques and
mine will have more people and will have locations that are in my music video idea.
a different atmosphere and colour/ filter.
I will create the same amount of interest
I will create the same amount of interest in by making the girls in my music video do a
my video by creating a lively atmosphere, small dance, making it interesting for the
but good camera techniques that will viewers to watch, and the dance may be
make my video look good quality. so interesting enough the viewers of my
video might an to join in.
I will be doing something similar, for example, one of my transitions is where a girl has just
woken up, she looks at photos on her phone, she then stops at this one picture and the
camera will zoom and suddenly be at the scene of them taking that photo. The video will
then carry on with the girls round a bonfire and having fun.
I doubt I will be able to get as many thumbs up and views as this student, but that does
not worry me, as I just want to create a good-looking music video.
Research into competitors
This music video ( Faded by Alan Walker) is one of my main competitors; it has similar
techniques that are in my idea. The whole of this video is a boy on his own having
flashback to him and his girlfriend (who is now dead). He walks around different locations
and sees flashbacks with her. This is so similar to my idea as mine includes flashbacks (but
just flashbacks from the night before.
The faded music video also contains good camera techniques and video transitions that I
think I can compete against. He uses transitions/ match cuts to move the video to the
flashbacks for example in a flashback the boy is kneeling down to the girl, and then
suddenly he is kneeling down to her grave (this is shown at the end of the video.

My second competitor is DJ Fresh Louder, this is an official music video and
isnt just available to watch on YouTube, it is available to watch on music
channels and websites. There isnt any spectacular camera match cuts that
will be similar to mine but the overall narrative, people hanging out and
having fun is similar to my video. This video uses many low shots to emphasise
the activitys all the people are doing (you can see this from the screenshot
above or at 0:51 on the video) e.g. skating and rollerblading. This gives me
ideas to add to my video for example low shots when the girls are sitting
down, to capture the facial emotions.
The overall effect that this video gives is inspirational and happy, the same
emotions mine.
Because this music video is official with over 100,000 thumbs up and
27,673,893 views, I highly doubt my video will get this much attention, but this
does not mean that I cannot create a good looking video.
Research into market
Some could say the market doesnt need another production like mine,
however I would disagree and say the market does need one like my. I
believe this because my video idea is very technique using throwbacks and
match cuts, which make my video completely different to others. Now a
days videos are so sexualised people dont appreciate videos where its just
people having fun and doing things that could inspire people to get out the
house more and appreciate having good friends. Therefore, I believe my
video could show music companies that people can get a lot of enjoyment
out of watching something everyone can do.
