Katharinas Crown Garden Project Proposal
Mission
Our mission is to contribute to strong, healthy, and vibrant community by
facilitating neighborhood engagement, increasing access to nutritious food, and
demonstrating sustainable practices. We will accomplish this mission by
cultivating a modest garden, distributing food to neighbors, developing a revenue
generating community composting program, and by creating opportunities for
community participation and education at every phase of the project.
Partner Organizations
Highly productive urban garden sites require land, commitment, and volunteer engagement. Three
501c3 partner organizations are joining together to accomplish this mission.

Program Overview
Why Katharinas Garden?
The garden is named for Katharina von Bora, the wife of Martin Luther. While
Martin was busy nailing treatises on doors, Katharina grew much of what they ate in
her own private garden, managed many of the affairs of the monastery and
perhaps most famously brewed her own beer.
She was given many responsibilities consider taboo for women of the time and
breaking with the tradition of the times, Martin made her is sole heir. Despite the
somewhat arrange nature of their marriage, by all accounts the two loved each other
dearly.
We felt that naming the garden for her was an appropriate tribute to her vital
contribution to the founding of the Lutheran Church.

Community Composting Program
Overview
We will be offering Katharinas Garden Shares, to individuals and families, as a way of creating stakeholder buy-
in and off-setting the capital investment and on-going costs associated with the program. We will be offering
three types of shares (Bronze, Silver, Gold), and shareholders will receive certain benefits depending on the type
of share purchased.
All shareholders will benefit from knowing that their tax deductible donation will go towards a sustainable
program that seeks to ensure food security for low-income seniors and other at-risk populations within our
community, develop local food systems, and provide for Secondary School Garden Education. All shareholders
will also have the ability to reduce their carbon footprint by composting their organic waste and they will have
access to finished compost for their home garden needs.
Shareholders who want to demonstrate greater support for the program can purchase a Silver Share which
entitles them to an end of season dinner, hosted at Faith Lutheran, where a local chef will use items from the
garden to prepare a meal with all locally sourced ingredients. Gold shareholders will also be invited to the dinner
party, and will receive a twice per month garden share that will include vegetables from the garden as well as
locally grown fruit.

Revenue Potential
Revenue Sharing
Faith Lutheran Church is responsible for selling half of all available shares and they will keep the revenue from
those sales. The revenue will be first used to off-set the cost of utilities associated with the project. Any
additional funds would be fed back into the garden project to pay for infrastructure and future expansion of the
program.
Homer Js and RISE is responsible for selling half of the shares and they will keep the revenue from those sales.
The revenue will first be used to off-set the initial capital ($1,777.77) given to the project by the organizations.
Additional revenue will go towards off-setting on-going costs associated with the program.
