The goal of the course was to improve my acting skills in
multiple different areas of theatre. My assignment was to
compete some form of scene or monologue at the ohlone
theatre competition, which gave me insight into what it is like
to participate in competitive theatre. I needed to know the
rules and guidelines of the competition and the timeframe I
had for rehearsals. Upon completing the project, I learned
what it is like to write a scene instead of searching for one
online, I learned about safely performing a combat scene with
weapons involved in it, and I learned about what theatre
competitions are like as well as how to handle them.
To complete my project I: Wrote out a script, helped to block
the scene and establish safety with the combat, memorized
and rehearsed with my scene partners, performed my scene
twice for the competition, performed it for the finals of the
competition, and accepted my award for third place in our
category. Because I know how to write, direct, and perform a
combat scene for a competition, I can now write such scenes,
perform them, and participate in competitions with ease in the
future. I used google docs for the first time in the writing
process, and metal fencing swords in the combat. I learned
more about combat scene safety, and how to make the
physicality appear to be real without hurting anybody. I also
improved my overall performing skills, especially when met
with tough competition.
The performances went well, because everybody was
memorized and remembered the blocking. The writing
process and rehearsals could have gone better; I could have
taken the initiative and wrote it myself before, instead of
deciding to do it the night before it was due after failed
attempts at group writing. There is always more time for
rehearsal and feedback, but we still rehearsed as much as
possible. I demonstrated growth by writing my first ever
scene on my own, and participating in my first theatre
competition. By working through this project, I expanded my
knowledge of writing, performing combat especially, and
competing. The particular project made an impact on me as a
student in the arts academy because it was the first time I was
able to not only use my skills, but put them to the test. I wrote
the scene myself, and mnbmhjbmhjbmhj, I competed it again
other schools including art schools that had higher training
than I. In the end, I won third place in the contemporary
humorous ensemble category, and got a lot more confidence in
my creative writing.
