ABOUT UTEACH
UTeach is a unique university-based secondary STEM
(science, technology, engineering, math) teacher preparation
program that answers the critical need for qualified STEM
teachers in Texas and across the country. With its nationally
scalable program for universities, UTeach is producing a
rapidly growing number of teachers who are educating
tomorrows scientists and engineers to play a vital role in
Americas economic growth.

National Recognition
UTeach was highlighted as a promising program by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and by
the Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
President Barack Obama cited UTeach as a way that universities can educate the next generation of scientists and
mathematicians.
The White House recognized UTeach for its exemplary preparation of mathematics and science teachers in connection with
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant to replicate UTeach at 10 additional universities.

Critical UTeach Components


A compact degree plan that allows students to graduate in four years with a degree in their major and
secondary STEM teacher certification.
Flexible entry points for undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and nontraditional students.
Partial tuition reimbursement to try out teaching.
Early field experience that places students in classrooms during their first semesters.
Paid internships at schools and nonprofit organizations to reinforce the students experience and
commitment to teaching.
Master teachers with backgrounds in public school teaching and leadership to guide students through a
sequence of field experiences.
Inquiry-based instruction to enhance student mastery of STEM course content.
In-service mentor teachers who work closely with students in their field placement.
Mentoring and support for the first two years of teaching.
