Black Death
Black death was known as one of the most memorable event in history of mankind.
The black death was the name of the pandemic that the plague was spread widely in Europe
in 14th century. The plague was an inflection disease caused by a bacterium called Yersinia
pestis which commonly present in populations of fleas carried by rat. This event killed over
one-third of population in Europe in only four years. There are plenty of causes that make this
disease became epidemic.
There was an evidence that this disease was first developed in China and spread to
Europe by the Mongols. In 13th century, Mongols united their empire across Asia. After the
pillaging and conquest, they connecting China and Russia and everywhere in between
reinventing the Silk road and connecting East with West. Actually, the plague originated in
Central Asia; however, it had already been in China for a thousand of years. At that time
merchants were trade by many ways such as ships, the plague was kill and breakdown a great
number of people across Asia. In 1347, after the siege of Mongol army under the leadership
of Jani Beg at the Feodosiya trade center in Crimea, the Mongol army faced the plague. They
shot dead body infected with plague as a cannonball over the wall. In order to spread the
plague to population in the city. Some people were able to escape by ships. Italian merchants
were one of them, they were sailing across the Mediterranean back to Italy and brought the
plague with them. After they arrived at Italy, the rats that carried the plague in the ship came
out and spread it out to Europe widely and dramatically. Some ship that all of the people
infected the disease and died before the ship arrived at the port. So the ship was abandoned.
The plague was carried by the pirates that robbed the abandoned ship. This was one of the
way that the plague was carried. Before the black dead start to spread in Europe, there were
a great deal of event that make black dead became more worst such as wars, drought, famine,
terrible weather and so on. At the that time Europe became very weak. Because of this, this
epidemic became much worse than it supposed to be. Famine was one of the important
reasons why the black dead occurred. There was an evidence that before the plague started
to spread off, there was a famine occurred in Europe and this made people in Europe became
nutrient deficiency and affected the health of people in that area. Therefore, most of people
became weak and easy contacted a disease. At that time, the medical technology was not
developed yet. Hygiene and sanitation were non-existent. Germ theory was not even
theorized. In spite of the fact that there was no cure at that time, this make the plague spread
rapidly because that ignorance of people.
Many people in that time knew how to avoid sickness, but we know very little about
how to cure the disease. Most medieval cures involved bloodletting, which was to get rid of
poison in the body. Some people believed that maybe it was god punishing them for their
bad, they turned to the church for a cure, praying because they believed that god would end
the plague.
