How big are

our planets?
By Miss Cece
The Sun
Sun facts

Our star - the Sun - is the center of our solar system.

Without our Sun, there would be no life on Earth.
Our solar system is made up of the Sun, eight planets, 146 moons, a bunch of
comets, asteroids and space rocks, ice and several dwarf planets, such as Pluto.
Our Sun is a ball of hot, glowing gases.
The part we can see is about 6100 degrees C. The hottest the oven in your kitchen
gets is 260 degrees C.
It shoots flares of hot gas thousands of kilometers into space.

Moon Facts

The moon is not a planet, but a satellite of the Earth.

The surface area of the moon is 9.4 billion acres.
Only 59% of the moon's surface is visible from earth.
The Moon is 4.5 billion years old.
The Moon is about 384,400 kilometres from Earth.
Moon's rotation

The Moon takes about 27 days (27 days, 7 hours, 43 minutes, 11.6
seconds) to go all the way around the Earth and return to its starting
position.
The moon rotates (orbits) the Earth at an average speed of 3,683 kilometres
per hour. The movement of the Moon is due to the rotation of the Earth on
its axis every 24 hours.
The Moon orbits the Earth in 27.3 days. (phases of the moon)
The movement of the Moon around the Earth results in its changing
appearance as viewed from Earth over the course of the lunar month.
It rotates over the period of a lunar month while the Earth is orbiting the Sun.
What is a Lunar month?

The time between the

successive new moons.

Galileo
Galileo
Claimed that the sun was the centre of the universe and that the Earth was
one of several planets that orbited the sun.
First person to provide evidence to his this idea.
In 1609, Galileo built a telescope powerful enough to see the four largest
moons of Jupiter.
Every observation made supported his claim that the planets orbited the Sun
rather than the Earth.
After publishing his ideas, people complained to the authorities and he was
put under house arrest.
Over time, scientists created better telescopes and were able to accept this
new evidence.
NASA
NASA
NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
It is a government agency that was created by Congress in 1958.
NASAs mission is to explore space and aeronautics, or flight research.
Responsible for making sure that the United States space program is conducted for peaceful
purposes that can help mankind.
NASA makes satellites. These satellites help scientists learn more about Earth. They send probes
out into space to study things in the solar system, and even farther away.
People at NASA work on ways to make air travel better for everyone on Earth. They also share
the things they learn with others which helps make life on Earth better.
NASA is in control of the International Space Station and satellites to help people better
understand weather patterns on Earth.
