1 Introduction

This document describes the SUMMIT X Stream and SUMMIT X Stream Pro (or in the following
shortly XStream or XStream Pro) seismograph and refers to the following product versions:

Device-Type Description
SUMMIT X Stream Pro 24-channel seismograph with integrated
embedded computer
SUMMIT X Stream 24-channel seismograph with USB-Interface to
external control computer

The SUMMIT X Stream is a robust 24 channel seismograph specially designed for engineering
applications like LVL, MASW and many others. While the SUMMIT X Stream does require an
external PC or Laptop to operate, the SUMMIT X Stream Pro is an all in one seismograph which
combines the 24 channel acquisition system together with an embedded operation computer,
keyboard and mouse controls and a high resolution screen for seismic data previews.
The instrument can be connected through spread cables or seismic land streamers to any type
of geophones through a standardized connector.
The SUMMIT X Stream and X Stream Pro are designed for mobile measurements and can be
operated with a standard car battery or any other power supply in the range of 9 to 18 Volts DC.
The storage for the seismic data is also included into the device, so there is no need to attach
storage devices during the complete field work. The data can be retrieved from the device later
via standard USB connection.
The instrument can be combined with almost all market available seismic sources by various
trigger in- and control outputs.

2.2 Connectors and connection cables

The connectors used for Power Supply and Trigger-In and Outputs are ruggedized field proofed
and IP67 sealed plugs which enable a simple and fast connection and disconnection of cables.
The proper orientation of the connector is marked by a red dot both at the connector as well as
the socket on the XStream.
The connector used for the analogue input (geophone connection) is a standard 55pin MIL
connector which is used on most seismic spread cables. If any other connector is needed there
can be applied also a suitable adapter.
Position of the individual connectors on the instrument is shown in figures 2 to 3.

2.3 Power supply

The SUMMIT X Stream seismograph is operated by an external 12 V DC power supply (input

range 9 - 18 V DC). In normal field operation this is usually a standard 12V car battery, which
can easily be found worldwide.
The instrument can also be operated by any 12V DC main power supply which can at least
supply a current of 5A peak.
The SUMMIT X Stream Pro is equipped with an additional second power connector for external
supply in order to enable battery replacement during operation (the standard X Stream has only
1 connector).

3 Device handling

The SUMMIT X Stream is designed as an autonomous recording device for 24 channels

measurements and does not require additional hardware or software for operation or parameter
setup. Setting of parameters can be achieved by direct access of the XStream via the integrated
display and keyboard.

3.1 Starting the XStream

The SUMMIT X Stream is started by simply plugging in the power connector. The same applies
for the SUMMIT X Stream Pro version. As soon as the instrument is powered by an external
battery or power supply, the boot up sequence is started automatically. Like a normal desktop
or laptop computer the instrument runs through a boot sequence which should not be
interrupted by the user.
At the end of the boot up sequence the instrument will automatically start the Windows
operating system and launch the acquisition software which is used to control the instrument
and run the measurements. For a detailed description of the different functions of the acquisition
software, please refer to chapter 4 of the instruction manual.

Please note! (X Stream Pro only)

During the boot up process and during runtime the power should not be
removed without previous shutdown of the whole system.

Attention! (X Stream Pro only)

Interrupting the power during runtime can cause a corrupted file system
and data loss.

3.2 Operating the SUMMIT X Stream

The SUMMIT X Stream requires an additional PC / Laptop with the SUMMIT Acquisition
Software installed in order to operate.
The SUMMIT X Stream Pro is operated by a full computer like keyboard and mouse pointing
device which is shown in Figure 4. The system is based on a regular Windows XP operation
system. The measuring and parameters for the seismic data recording are controlled by the
SUMMIT Acquisition Tool .NET. Please refer to chapter 4 of this manual for a detailed
description of the operation. Additionally the software offers a dynamic online/offline help
system which describes all settings and options by briefly introductions.

Figure 4 Top View of the SUMMIT X Stream Pro with Keyboard and Mouse

3.3 Exchanging the Battery

The battery for the SUMMIT X Stream can easily be changed when the instrument is in idle
mode, i.e. where no data recording is taken place in break times between shots. The instrument
will restart within a few seconds after the new battery is connected.
The SUMMIT X Stream Pro offers two separated battery connectors on the left side of the
instrument (see Figure 3). These equivalent inputs can be both used to power the device from
an external battery. The advantage of the two battery inputs (Battery A & Battery B) is that in

DMT GmbH & Co. KG; Exploration & Geosurvey, Rev 02 Page 11 / 28
Operation Manual

runtime it is possible to exchange the battery without shutting down the system and the need of
a restart.
To exchange the almost empty battery, just plug a fully charged battery in the non occupied
battery connector and then remove the empty battery from the other input.

3.4 Storing and coping data from the device

The SUMMIT X Stream Pro offers an internal flash based memory (Solid-State-Disc) for system
and data storage. Therefore the total amount of memory is separated into one partition for the
operating system and the acquisition software and another partition for data storage.
The partition for the operating system is protected against direct writing to ensure a proper
system operation in case of sudden power failures or other influences. Therefore it is not
recommended to store measurement data to the system partition.

Please note!
Dont store any user data to the system partition of the device. This partition is
only used for operation system and measurement applications.

If you want to copy your in-field collected data from the device to another computer, you could
easily use the standardized USB connector on the left side of the device (see Figure 3). Just
connect any USB Stick or other Mass-Storage Device to this port and wait until windows has
recognized the new hardware. After this you can use the build in explorer to copy your data
from the data partition to the mass storage.

Please note!
Clean up the data partition from time to time (delete old data) to ensure you to
have enough disk space during acquisition.

After finishing the data copy process, just unmount the mass storage device and plug it off from
the SUMMIT X Stream Pro.

3.5 Turning OFF the instrument

To turn off the SUMMIT X Stream Pro, just select the windows shutdown option (like on any
other desktop and laptop computer) and wait until the system has been completely shutdown.
After the system has been shutdown you can safely remove the battery from the device. Keep
in mind not to remove the battery during the runtime or the shutdown process; this could result
in data loss or a corrupted file system.
The standard SUMMIT X Stream is turned off simply by disconnecting the external 12 V DC
power supply.

4.4 Creating a new survey before starting a measurement

Before starting a new measurement / survey, a new survey file should be created by the user.
This survey file include some basic information about the survey (also included later in the
SEG2-Headers), set the survey and data output directories, resets the shot counters and will
later also include the recording sheet information of the specific measurement.
To create a new survey, just navigate to the menu Survey Create New Survey. First there
will be presented a settings dialogue where you can enter a survey name and set the output
directory for the survey file itself as well as the output directory for the seismic data of this
survey (see Figure 7)

Operation Manual

Figure 7 Create New Survey Dialogue (Basic Settings)

Please ensure that you always set the location of the survey file and the location of the seismic
data to the data partition (drive D:\) of the SUMMIT X Stream Pro.
With the Next button you will be guided to the survey parameters dialogue which offers the
setting of the allocation mode. In the summit system there are two different ways of allocation.
On is by using a Pocket PC in the field, the other one is assigning your stations from the
recording station itself (see Figure 8).

Figure 8 Create New Survey Dialogue (Survey Parameters)

Please note that the allocation mode Pocket PC is not available to the SUMMIT X Stream
series, because the allocation is always done from the operator of the main recording system.
Therefore ensure to not select the option Use Pocket PC for Allocation and press the Next
button afterwards.
The last step of creating a new survey is to enter some basic information about the survey itself,
which helps to identify the survey later. These information are manly the Project Name, Survey
Name, Client Name, Contractors Name and the name of the Observer. This information is also
stored into the Header information of every SEG2 File created within this survey. This makes it
later also very easy to identify the files. See Figure 9 for the settings dialog which will be
presented during survey creation.

Receiver Location These four settings define the stations in the spread view. In other
words these four settings form the layout of your seismic channels
in the field. A basic setting for a 24 channel Unit are the following
settings:
First Line: 1, Number of Lines: 1,
First Station: 1, Number of Stations: 24
Data Output These settings define your Data Output options. In case of the
SUMMIT X Stream Pro Unit the data output directory should
always be set to the Data partition of the internal storage (drive
D:\).
The file name prefix, Auto Save and Auto Print options can be set
according to your in-field needs.
The Shot-Point Number indicates the number of the following shot
and should be set to 1 before starting a new acquisition.

Please note!
Always store the seismic data on the data partition of the device (drive D:\).
Avoid storing the data on the system Partition which is only used for operating
system and software.

All other Parameters of the Recording- and Shooting-Dialogue are explained within the dynamic
help of the software itself.

4.6 Assigning Line and Station Number

After you have set up the physical address of your instrument you have now to assign your real
field positions of every channel (Line and Station Number) to the respective physical address of
the instrument. This has to be done according your geophone position in the field.
For the XStream Unit you normally use a seismic spread cable or a seismic streamer which is
hard wired from channel 1 to channel 24. In this case the assignment can be easily done by
selecting all the physical channels on the left side of the window, pressing the right mouse
button and selecting the Assign Stations dialog (see Figure 11).

In this dialog you can enter the line number and first station number you want to assign to your
active spread. In this example all of the physical channels will be allocated to line one and
station one to twenty four.
After you have pressed the OK button the allocation process will be done and you can see the
result in the spread view window on the bottom of the screen (see Figure 13) and the seismic
channel list on the left side of the screen (see Figure 13). In this example the red markings in
the spread view has been turned into green to indicate that to each field station there is
assigned a specific physical channel of the instrument. This information is also shown in the
seismic channel list on the left side of the screen in the line and station column.

4.7 Test Function and Instrument Check

The SUMMIT X Stream Pro offers various instrument test and check function to ensure
reliability and the proper operation of your instrument as well as the sensors which are
connected to the instrument.
The mainly used test function is System Check (see Figure 17), which offers you a list-view of
all the instrument parameters like Total Harmonic Distortion, System Noise, Instantaneous
Dynamic Range, Common Mode Rejection, Cross Talk and Time Accuracy as well as
information about the installed firmware versions of the tested instrument / channels.
Another important test is the geophone check, which will offer a list view of the sensor specific
information like geophone impedance, damping, natural frequency and noise.
All this offers you the possibility to do in-field and fast pre-measurement tests of your complete
equipment in the field and ensure quality control.
All the test functions are channel independent and can be easily accessed by selecting the
wanted seismic channels in the channel list window and press the right mouse button to the
selection (see Figure 14)

Figure 14 Test Functions

In this window you can find the main test routines like the described System- and Geophone-
Check. For further investigations there are also some other test possibilities which can be found
under Function Tests ... (see Figure 15). In this dialog you can select individual tests with trace
display as result and select the desired recording parameters for this specific test.

Figure 15 Function Test Selection

These function tests will result in a channel-wise trace display and offers the possibility to
analyse each seismic channel in detail. One important function test is the integrated geophone
test, which will stimulate the selected geophones by an electronic pulse and then records the
swing-out of your seismic stations in the field. These visual tests give you detailed information
about the quality of your in-field geophones. In Figure 16 you can see the result of a sample
sinus test on a 24 channel system.
