Brief description of the A brief read aloud of the book Frida by Jonah Winter which explores the life of the
lesson famous female artist, Frida Kahlo. A simple biography about her life and how
her accidents inspired her to paint. Students can see and learn facts about her
paintings.

Children will develop their vocabulary by using vocabulary words like painting,
photograph, and accident.
Students will also develop their literacy skills, by listening to a book and making
connections to their lives.
Students will develop their communication skills by sharing and listening to other
ideas.
Teacher will invite the students to a large group meeting on the rug. She is going
to tell them that she will be reading a story to the class. Teacher will ask the
students how they are supposed to be sitting on the carpet. Depending on the
childrens responses the teacher will remind the children that they can sit

The teacher will hold up the book Frida by Jonah Winter and read the title, the
author and illustrator. The teacher will ask the children what they think the story
will be about. The teacher will read the story out loud while pausing throughout
the book and asking the children questions about the story and what they think
will happen. The teacher will make sure to show the pictures to the students.
Teacher assistants will help the students understand the book by translating, if
possible, or repeating what the teacher has read. Teacher will also take the
students who need independent practice to the library center and do a small
group reading, during center time.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)
After the read aloud the teacher will explain to the children that now they have a

chance to share what they do when they are sad. For example, when Frida feels
sad she paints and that makes her happy. The teacher and the assistants will
also share what they do when they are feeling sad.
The teacher will ask the students to raise their hand if they want to share.
