on of beauty has changed so
day that its become increasingly
ss, borderless and ageless. Its an
at promises to make you lookand
tter, prettier and fresher with
s and services that dont judge your
size, income or state of mind. In this issue, we want to embrace different facets of beauty, and what it
means to women of different ages and backgrounds. As Harpers BAZAAR celebrates its
150th anniversary this year, my role as custodian of the Singapore edition is all the
more pertinent in this digital agewhere our magazine and website address a wider,
more diverse and time-starved audience than ever before. Living in a multi-cultural society
encompassing so many religions, races and dialects, I make a conscious effort to be as inclusive
as possible, but always in a chic, elegant manner. I try out makeup and skincare, espousing the
virtues of Cl de Peau Beauts Le Serum as one of my skincare favourites and Sulwhasoos
Perfecting Cushion as a mainstay in my cosmetics kit. I try on the latest bags in press rooms,
opening them up to see if it fits all and sundry, and if the zipper works efficiently without snagging
a loose thread or chipping a manicured nail. Fashion and beauty today are increasingly a shared
wardrobe and vanity table experience, with both sexes happily borrowing from each other. As girls go to
work in oversized pinstripe mens shirts and leather skirts; guys go from gym to boardroom, glowing
with dewy, tinted complexions, leaving no pore uncovered. Despiteand because ofwhat is
happening in world politics right now, Harpers BAZAAR is making positive changes right before your
kohl-lined eyes. Carine Roitfelds pre-fall fashion and beauty spread on page 146 embraces diversity
in model choices, dressing hijabi model Halima Aden in Balenciaga.
We shot one of Singapores greatest model exports, Huda Ali on page 103, who,
at 43, is living proof that age only makes one more beautiful, with a confidence
and grace that comes with worldly experience and that certain je ne sais quoi.
Beauty at every age, for every colour and every raceif politics shared the same vision,
the world would indeed be a more beautiful place.
Let fashion pave the way forward.

Sangster wrote religious poetry and hymns
throughout her time as editor of BAZAR, as
well as pious stories for children. She brought
the same serious-mindedness to her editorship
as she had to her career as an author:The role
of editor, she observed, required concentration,
consecration and tireless energy. Sangsters era
included the serialised publication of Thomas
Hardys Tess of the dUrbervilles in 1891;
while another of her most notable issues, in
March 1896, was devoted to the subject of
bicycling for women, as a means of promoting
female independence.

her tenure, Jordan changed it from a weekly to a

of the 12 chapters was written by a different author
(including one by her friend Henry James). Jordans
BAZAR was widely admired for its literary brilliance
as well as the beauty of its Art Nouveau covers.

BAZAARS longest-serving editorand still the most influential,
with an aesthetic that remains appealing todaywas the Irish-
born Carmel Snow. By the time she was appointed, a series of
male editors had been at the helm of BAZAAR for more than
two decades; she brought a more feminine sensibility to the
pagesdeclaring that BAZAAR was for the well-dressed
woman with a well-dressed mindbut also introduced the
bold design of Alexey Brodovitch, a brilliant Russian art director.
During her reign, Snow nurtured a new generation of
photographers, including
Richard Avedon, Louise
Dahl-Wolfe and Lillian
Bassman; showcased art by
Salvador Dal, Jean Cocteau
and Andy Warhol; and
published the writing of
W.H. Auden and Truman
Capote.A fervent supporter
of Christian Dior, she coined
the phrase the New Look
for his debut collection in
1947. She also championed

Art Director, US BAZAAR,
19631969
The origins of RuthAnsels career at BAZAAR
are defined by superlatives. She joined as a
graphic designer in 1961, but soon became
(together with Bea Feitler) the magazines first
female art directorand the industrys
youngestat the age of 24. As well as youth,
she brought a pioneering spirit to the pages; in
1963, her friend Andy Warhol contributed a
story about new cars, and two years later she
put the first manSteve McQueenon the
cover of a womens magazine. She conceived
and created some of BAZAARs most iconic
images, famously for the April 1965 Pop issue,
in which Jean Shrimpton was shot in a NASA
space suit. Guest-edited by Richard Avedon, it
was a daring ode to the Swinging Sixties that
captured the movement of a generation.A
magazine is meant to reflect the time we live
in, she said, and if its a good magazine, it
reflects it provocatively.Thats what we did.

I am, but I wake up between 6:30 and 8 in the
morning. Ive slept only six hours a night since my
60s.We require less sleep, Ive read. If Im off travelling
and diving or trekking all day, I try to sleep more.Your
body needs rejuvenation. I usually wake up without an alarm.
I have this weird thing Ive developed: I almost always know
what time it is, night or day. I like it. It makes me feel connected
with life. 7:30AM After I brush my teeth and comb my hair, I take
a weather check to see what the day can bring; also for dressing. Then
I [put on] makeup, [which takes] six to nine minutes. I mostly use my
own makeup line, and I dont have routines of any sort. I usually wear
jeans, a jacket and a t-shirt. Right now Im wearing Prada flat black ankle
boots. They last forever. The ones Im wearing are two years old. I buy two
pairs at a time so that I can still have them when they quit making them.
The jackets I wear are often Armani because they dont go in and out of

about 45 minutes to leave the house. I always eat out. I like to read the paper
and have food brought to me so I can take a long, leisurely time. I tend to
eat at the exact same places near where I live, either in downtown Manhattan or in Venice. I usually order a pot of English
breakfast tea,but once in a while I bring my own Taifu, which is a strong old Chinese tea. Coffee and tea are a problemI
need to cut down. I may have five teas in the morning. About a year ago, I started drinking coffee for the first time in
my life. I found this thing I really like called a cortado [espresso and steamed milk].They cant make them at the place
where I eat in NewYork, but they sure can make them in Venice, and Ill order one to have there and another to
go. For breakfast, I have oatmeal and fruit salad with yoghurt and honey and nuts, or huevos rancheros. In L.A.,
theres a place that has a great seeded bialy with harissa, a soft fried egg and arugula. Thats a weakness. I take
off the thicker slice of bread. I dont want to eat too much bread. I check my weight every day, so if I find
that its going north, I try to just eat either protein and vegetables or carbohydrates and vegetables. You
dont want to mix protein and carbohydrates because thats when it sticks to you. I do that for three
or four days, and it changes my weight very quickly. With breakfast I like to read The NewYork
Times or The Wall Street Journal or The Washington Post to find out whats happened.
10:30AM My work [schedule] has been extremely irregular since I signed my
contract with Revlon in 1973. Before then, all modelling was by the hour!
I take subways a lot. I much prefer the subway to Uber or taxis
because its faster. I do whatevers convenient and gives

try to stay in my hood. 12:00PM I
dont eat lunch. Ive never been a lady
who lunches. I eat a big breakfast and just go
through until dinner. Id like to get into the habit
of snacking. I keep some bananas around, and I
drink a ton of water. I keep water on both sides of
the bed, in my car, everywhere. Sometimes Ill eat the
odd pear. 2:00PM I dont have a typical afternoon. I
havent had a schedule, really, for 25 years, maybe more. I
spend time seeing friends, going to a movie, reading. If Im
in NewYork, I go to museums. I try to take care of all sorts
of business, which should include emails, but I am quite
remiss about all that. I have no social media whatsoever. Dont
like it. I try to check my emails once a month or, at most,
every couple of weeks. 7:00PM I eat dinner. I go out and
meet friends, or I eat alone with a book. Tonight Im going
out with Anna Deavere Smith. Shes an old friend, and shes
usually going in one direction and Im going in another, so
were always catching up. Im blessed with many great old
friends.They all do different things, but we keep finding one another. Its easier to cook in L.A. I dont know why;
I guess its because I have skylights everywhere. I have a little 1917 beach shack in Venice, and I have, like, seven
skylights. I make pasta usually, with some sort of tomato, mint, hot pepper and orange sauce.Thats a favourite. I
have a nice old kitchen with a giant 1934 Magic Chef stove, and I have friends who come over and cook for
me and cook with me. 11:00PM If Im stressed, Ill try to talk myself into a bath instead of a shower; I have
wonderful tubs and nice oils. If I have a night out with my friends, I am in bed around 11 or 12. Otherwise
Im in bed reading by 8. I read in bed even though they say its bad for you. I read everywhere I am.
I dont sleep easily without reading; Ive read up to eight hours in a single night. Its therapy;
mental travel. I read everything. Ive loved Mark Twain since I was a kid. Also Pound;
Cummings; Genghis Khan: Life, Death, and Resurrection, by John Man; and William S.

ALL THE BUZZ
IN FASHION
Edited by Gerald Tan

To say that Valentino is built on many

facets of beauty is an understatement.
I know what women want. They want
to be beautiful, its namesake founder,
Valentino Garavani, once proclaimed.
Grace, elegance and screen-goddess style
have steered the House to great renown; its
prominence taken to more fantastical
heights when Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria
Grazia Chiuri took over the creative reins in
2008. This lauded partnership may be no
more, but the allure still remains under
Picciolis sole charge. In his first collection since
going solo, Piccioli went back to the essence of
the brand and concocted a variety of ethereal
dresses, some awash in the brightest bursts of
fuchsia and pink, others enriched by British artist
Zandra Rhodes rendition of Hieronymus Boschs The
Garden of Earthly Delights painting. As if to underscore
the fact that beauty is a deeply personal pursuit at
Valentino, each model slung a compact vanity case with a
hidden lipstick slot close to them as they circled the halls
of the Htel Salomon de Rothschild.

ty was a painting in oils the day I visited Nicolas Ghesquire.
, but the blue sky was made for Paris, the perfect ground for
ings, all that history and all that romance. Paris is the sublime
essence of a dream we want to believe in, that living is a beautiful art, and all the
way to the horizon the rooftops and spires convey a hunger for something
wonderful. On the right bank, steps from the Pont Neuf, on the second floor of
a grand building by Rue de Rivoli, scented candles were burning in the many-
roomed ateliers of Louis Vuitton. In every room, the candles burned, the threads
loopeda golden moment takes many hours.
It tells you a lot about a person, how he walks into a room. (Remember Carly
Simons line about the guy who walks into the party, like [hes] walking onto a
yacht?) It so happens that Nicolas Ghesquire doesnt so much walk into the room,
he rolls in, a ball of energy and openness, and we said hello like two sudden prisoners
of luxury, locked in a giant white room overlooking the Seine. You are the official
winner of the best-office competition, I told him. Bigger than Karl Lagerfelds at
Chanel, nicer than Sarah Burtons at Alexander McQueen, whiter than Mrs. Pradas.
I know. Nice, right? he said, laughing.
The laughter, by the way, is important. During the 15 years he served as Creative
Director of Balenciaga, Ghesquire was better known for his seriousness, his shyness,
and for a near reclusive unwillingness to play the part of the party-boy designer with
celebrity friends. But now there are signs of an upbeat, easier Ghesquire, a man both
sure of his place in the world and comfortable with his own talent. Ghesquire is at
the top of his form, and fresh challenges are like oxygen to him. Newly light on his
second wind, Ghesquire appreciates the amusement that comes with experience, and
he has no end of determination, which I believe will soon lead to a namesake label.
When I asked him, he said as much. But thats the future. For the present, Ghesquire
is the delighted head of Louis Vuitton, a man with the intelligence to question himself
and push for clarity.Youll even see Ghesquire in the company of celebrity pals
nowadays, but the bigger sense you get with him is that his life is falling into place and
his wings are spreading.
Andy Warhol once told a friend of mine how to interview an artist. Ask him 25
questions in the right order, he said. I told Ghesquire this, and he was instantly amused,
so we sat down on a big white sofa, and, in honour of his new lightness, I sent my
questions, written on squares of paper, across to him like paper airplanes. Ghesquire had
had, he told me, a fairly boring upbringing in Loudun, in western France: His father
managed a golf course, and Ghesquire grew up dreaming of life beyond the fairway.
What is home? I asked.
Paris is home, he said. But home is also a nostalgia for adolescence. It is a fantasy,
out of proportion. Your poet Rimbaud said, Life is elsewhere, I reply. Exactly, said
Ghesquire. Its a very good way of seeing it. And theres an addiction now of travelling,
of having a different experience. I dont like to go home anymore to the home of my
childhood because, you know, its a place I will never find again. Even if its there.
Modern fashion designers, the great ones, have to be masters of sculpture and masters
of business, and Ghesquire is a byword for innovation in both. At Balenciaga he made
beautiful clothes, and the company was resurrected.Where Cristbal Balenciaga made the

of yes, the right word is control. He was in control of almost
everything. He was conducting the band and creating something
that belonged to him. He was at the helm. I hate the word
consultation. I dont know what it means.
He told me that resurrecting Balenciaga was difficult.
It was a transmission; I was carrying on for someone.
I probably underestimated how difficult it was.You just go
for it at age 25, and the context allowed my determination
to work. I am proud of it. I take responsibility for having
put Balenciaga back on the map, with integrity.
He is clearly proud of that achievement, but the
pressure it brought on himand the legal dispute that
engulfed him when he left the company in 2012
presents a conundrum that is typical of the fashion
world. How does a creative person pursue an individual
vision while being answerable both to the tradition
of a house and its commercial aims? It was quite
confusing, to be honest with you, he said. I got
lost in that. Sometimes I thought the company
was me, it was mine, it was not a heritage, we
were the same object, we shared the same DNA.
Then I realised I was wrong: Its a marriage that
can fail. I was happy but suffering too, not sure
whether I was trapped or free.
Perhaps freedom grows with wisdom.
Ghesquire is now 45,and he appears to take
pleasure in the challenge of time passing, and,
as always, that enjoyment is filtering into his work.I asked Ghesquire considers himself lucky to have strong partners at Louis

It was the crucial job interview of my 20s, and I had nothing to wear. My dream,
that summer of 1963, was to be hired by Eugenia Sheppard, the womens feature
editor of the New York Herald Tribune and the nations top fashion cop.Two things
I had been warned that Sheppard found unsightly: Old people and pregnant
women. I was young, but I was pregnant.Very.
I stayed up half the night before, sewing an orange-and-purple-striped
knockoff of a Marimekko tent dress. I remembered a pregnant Jacqueline
Kennedy wearing something like it during the 1960 presidential campaign.
That dress freed me to fake confidence. Sheppard even gave me a (back-
handed?) compliment on my choice.
Interesting colour combination.
I got the job.

prime time for harlots. But I actually began to like my short
shorts and matching jackets and, yes, the high-heeled boots
that brought me up in the world. When that look later
rose from the streets into It girls closets, I started to trust
my instincts for dressing more freely, no matter how
old I was.
As a divorce, I began keeping company with a

Many dates later, my beau, soon to become my husbaand, confessed,Once
you let me buy you that pantsuit, I couldnt pass a ladies-shhop window without
seeing you in whatever the mannequin was wearing. You hooked me! I didnt
remind him that Id paid for the pantsuit. From then on, I wore bright colours,

By the time I hit the menopausal passage, no mattter how religiously
I did Pilates, I couldnt button my skinny jeans.A rinng of flesh circling
my midriff followed me around as faithfully as one oof Jupiters moons.
When the hormonal chaos settled down in post-meenopause, I found
that it was quite possible to become lean again. Prooff? I was shopping
for some great pants to wear to my 55th-birthday party. The saleswoman
at Saks Fifth Avenue brought out a pair of blackk leather pants.
REALLY? But they slithered over my thunder thhighs and it felt
like a second skin.
Those leather pants became my winter staple. When I went
to the very corporate office of a woman edito or, wearing a
slithery silk shirt over them, she was insultinglly envious:I
couldnt get away with dressing like that.
For many women today, the 60s offers a rouute to fearless

Founder of The Paper Bunny

I believe There will never be a this is it.

As you progress, you celebrate little milestones,
and you keep looking for the next one. Weve
been very privileged to work with international
personalities and good brands. That makes me
proud; its a sign of appreciation and approval
that The Paper Bunny is no longer a small
passion project.
I create For the customer with great style
and a great mind. We hope to inspire not just
through quotes, but also through design and the
way we create beautiful and meaningful things
that are practical for their everyday lives.
I am motivated by Knowing that I am called
to be here at this moment; to reach women from
different walks of life. When tough times come,
knowing your purpose keeps you going.
The greatest joy Of having your own
business is the ability to create something of
your own. Seeing the work of your hands reach
people is very precious.
I never Imagined we would be selling
products across the world, even to countries
like South Africa and Guatemala. It would be
amazing to see The Paper Bunny becoming a
global brand, more than it is now.
Becoming a mother Has shown me even
more how humans have a great capacity to
adapt. We only have 24 hours a day, and a child
demands so much out of you, but you just adapt
and manage life as best as you know how.
Do Embrace who you are. At every point of
our lives, we are equipped with different skills
and gifts, and its all for a purpose. I could have
said, Im not business trained, therefore I cant
do business. But my legal training equipped me
in so many ways: How I think, reason, speak.
Whatever you have is enough to do great things;
you dont have to wish you were someone else.

Growing up, I was inspired

By Alanis Morissette, Gwen
Stefani and Shirley Manson.
They show that you dont have to
be feminine and conform to what
people think is girly, and yet still
be cool. In the industry, youre
expected to dress a certain way.
Dress a bit sexier? No, I cannot.
Shine by Being patient,
forgiving and purposeful. You
can solve a lot of lifes problems
[that way]. Things may not go
your way, but take a step back,
breathe and think if its worth
getting upset over, or if you can
just let it go.
I stay true to myself by
Not being complacent. Dont get
swept up in the fun and the fame;
its important to keep going back
to why youre doing it in the rst
place. You can get money and
success a lot faster by doing
certain things, but it could make
you lose what you are about.
Dont be a sell-out.
Some misconceptions
About musicians is that
were always late; that were
rock n roll people who party
all night. Were also not
jukeboxes. We cant play
everything and anything. And
being a musician is not a last
resort; its a conscious decision.
The greatest joy Is the fact
that I can be a full-time musician,
have a nose ring and purple
hair, and have very conventional
parents who are proud of me. Its
hard to do this without a support
system, especially when youre
rst starting out.
The goal is to To see our
music go beyond our shores.
But maybe thats not my calling;
maybe its to teach and mentor
like what Im doing at LASALLE
College of the Arts and Timbre

Do What you feel you excel

think youre good at music, go

I never Wanted to be a blogger

wanting to be a teacher. It all began with
a hosting gig and modelling for online

what I was wearing, then it took over my
life and became a career.
I like to explore Unconventional

its the blue version of Santorini.
I stay true to myself by Telling

I set a very high standard for myself;
I need to be better, be it when it comes

My philosophy is I work hard, I

I have no social life. I started working at

I send my dad and boyfriend to work,
do some shoots and spend the rest of

Florist and personal stylist

I am inspired By an amalgamation of everything

I see, feel and hear.
Style is All about comfort. I like minimalism and
menswear-inspired pieces, and nothing too body-
hugging. Its sexier to conceal than reveal.
I stay true to myself by Knowing how to say no.
I have a particular style of arrangement and like to
use certain kinds of owers. So when customers
give me a budget that doesnt make nancial sense
to me, Id rather say no to the transaction. Once
youve decided on the direction of your business,
you have to stick to it.
I am motivated by The fact that I get to do
what I love. Whether your business is a success
or failure is entirely up to you. You have to own it.
Its okay if you make mistakes, because
thats how you learn. You see the results of
everything that you work hard for, which is
really rewarding. If youre going to work
hard, why not do it for yourself?
The greatest challenge
Is overcoming my insecurities.
Like a work of art, each piece
I create is subjective. The
insecurity of whether people will
like what I do hits me every time.
You dont hear from clients if
something is good, only if there
are complaints. The only way
you know if they like it is if
they come back to you. At the
end of the day, you have to tell
yourself, I like it and Im proud
of it. You cant seek validation
from everyone.
The goal is to Have
another shop-in-shop concept,
do bigger events and create
bigger installations.
Do Go out of your comfort
zone. I style some private
clients, and when I suggest
certain pieces to them, they
say, Thats not me or give
other excuses. Why hire
me then? Just give it a
shotyou never know
how things will turn
out, so dont limit
your options.

How important a role has your sister played in

Choy: May is the ultimate mumnot only is
she raising kind, compassionate and smart
little ladies, her patience and determination
to make every situation a memorable one, be
it everyday milestones or big birthday parties,
is truly admirable. I look up to her, and have
conded in her ever since Dylan was born.
May: Choy is one devoted auntie (and one of
the best babysitters), who has played a key
role in my kids formative years. Whenever I
was exhausted when they were younger, she
stepped in and took care of them; and she
gives such substance to them by relating to
them on a very intellectual and emotionalon level
from the startshe was recently at the e Britis

discuss art and history.

What values from your mother arre

May: Both our grandmother an nd
mother are smart, stunning women

who never focused or complained d
about looks. Because they were condendent
and stayed true to themselves, we are too; n
we want to pass down this positive message to
our children.
Choy: Our grandma instilled in us a Hokkien
saying that means, Beauty wont matter if you
dont have a brain. We also want our kids to
have the same urgency to help others and the
strong family values they brought us up with

called draping, which takes pretty hues from jawline to cheekbones,

If the spring/summer 2017 runways of Chanel and
Kenzo are any indication, its that drapingwhere
blush is used in place of contour and highlight
kitsis the new go-to when dening the cheeks,
brow bones and even jawline. To slim and elongate
rounder face shapes, dab a powder blusher with a
satiny texture (try Make Up For Evers Artist

create the illusion of a more angular face. Sweep

look is perfect for a sultry night

create a C-shape that brings out

Make a statement with pops of the
eye-catching hue at unexpected
spots. Fuchsia applied just below the
inner corners of your brows creates
the illusion of deeper set eyes; using
punchy pink blush instead of contour
powder to sculpt your cheekbones
also exudes a super cool, athletic
vibe. The horizontal placement of the
blusher helps balance out a wide
forehead by making your jawline
appear more angularperfect for
those with a heart-shaped face.
Using an angled cheek brush, apply
M.A.Cs Powder Blush in Full Fuchsia
just beneath your cheekbones and
blend towards the ears. Dont forget

No longer reserved for those with
deeper skin tones, brick-brown blushers
are great alternatives for sculpting your
features instead of conventional
contour palettes. Formulated with a mix
of red and brown pigments, they also
add warmth to pale complexions and
are great for draping novices. Start
from the outer corners of the eyes and

Joyce Cheo explores the rise of ultra-luxe face creams and the driving force
behind their growing popularity in todays beauty-obsessed world.

I still remember the time I first dipped my finger into my mothers pot of Este Lauder Re-Nutriv face cream out of
curiosity. The year was 2004, I was 17 and wanted to find out why one tub cost as much as my monthly allowance.
Thanks to its rich texture, delicate scent and anti-ageing prowess, I quickly equated super expensive face creams as the
epitome of luxury skincare for the 40-something onwards.
Fast forward to the present day and it seems these fancy creams are no longer reserved for mature customers. For
the record, Im referring to the crme de la crme of skincare, consisting of face creams that easily cost $500 a pop.
According to Shaoyuan Han-Montillet, General Manager of Parfums Christian Dior, Singapore, the brand has noticed
a 24 percent growth in its Prestige skincare range among customers in their 30s.And Dior isnt alone in this. La Prairie
and Cl de Peau Beaut have also noticed significant changes in their customer base over the last couple of years:
Currently, at Dior, one in three are under the age of 40, while Cl de Peau Beaut has seen a 30 to 40 percent increase
of women under the age of 40 in their top spenders list. Cosme Decorte has also reported a steady increase of customers
under the age of 35 for its most expensive skincare range,AQ Meliority. All this points to a clear willingness of younger
women to splurge on premium products to fight ageing earlier on.
ER OW

This should come as no surprise, especially since the percentage of single women in their 20s and 30s is now much
higher than a decade ago; not to mention the fact that women today enjoy an unprecedented degree of economic

e

he evolution of face masks has been revolutionary. While earlier versions struggled to adhere to the
skin or even cracked upon drying, todays face masks are a whole different breed. Made of materials
such as bio-cellulose or hydrogel, they are more concentrated, and deliver instant, long-lasting results
(up to a few days versus a few hours).Active ingredients are usually the ones working the magic
and masks tend to contain an above-average level of active ingredients; thus, the improvements after
application are more visible, explains Dr PorYong Chen,Medical Director of Dream Aesthetics &
Plastic Surgery. However,if you have been sporadic with your usage, only slapping them on when
you need a quick-fix, its time to consider making them mainstays in your routine.A good face mask works as a great
complexion booster and you can use it to compensate any shortfalls of your skincare regime, Dr Por shares before
explaining that the efficacy of face masks comes down to the concentration of active ingredients (the higher the
concentration, the more visible the results) and the delivery method.
Dr Wilson Ho, Medical Director of NOVU Medical Aesthetic Holdings, says that face masks are effective because
they form a blanket over the skin, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate within. But not all face masks are created
equal, so its important to choose wisely. According to Dr Stephanie Ho, Consultant Dermatologist at Stephanie Ho
Dermatology, sheet masks that are made of high quality bio-cellulose or hydrogel masks enhance the penetration of
active ingredients into skin by forming skin-tight occlusion. This means that most of the essences are absorbed by our
skin instead of evaporating into the air, making them perfect for sealing in brightening, hydrating and calming ingredients.
On the other hand, clay masks are better for deep-cleansing or sebum-control properties because of their natural
absorption abilities, adds Dr Por.

If your main concern is hydration, look out for ingredients For those battling clogged pores and shine-prone skin,
like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, advises Dr look out for products that are enriched with clay, as
