TYWLS Course Outline for Parents 2016-2017

Course Name: 6th Grade Mathematics September 13, 2016

Teacher: Mr. Calvelo

Department: Mathematics

Course Description: Connected Mathematics Program 3 (CMP3) is a coherent problem-centered

curriculum that promotes an inquiry-based teaching-learning classroom environment. Important
mathematical ideas are identified and the essential understanding of these ideas is embedded in a
carefully-sequenced set of problem. There are seven student units for grade six:
1. Prime Time: Factors & Multiplies Students explore Number Theory including factors, multiples,
primes, composites, prime factorization; order of operations, and distributive property.
2. Comparing Bits and Pieces - Students analyze ratios, rational numbers and equivalence, absolute
value, number line.
3. Lets Be Rational: Understanding Fraction Operations- Students strengthen their knowledge of
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of fractions through fact families of operations.
4. Covering & Surrounding: Two-Dimensional Measurement- Students explore geometric concepts such
as area and perimeter relationships, surface area and volume of rectangular prisms.
5. Decimal Ops: Computing With Decimals & Percents Students revisit addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division of decimals, estimation; solutions for a% of b = c.
6. Variables & Patterns: Focus on Algebra Students discover variables, variable expressions,
equations, inequalities; representations of relationships in tables, graphs, and equations.
7. Data About Us: Statistics and Data Analysis Students analyze data distributions, including shape,
measures of center and variability.

Resources/Materials: CMP3 Textbook for each unit (see above), ACTIVe-book Student Edition,
Interactive MathTools, Digital Student Activities, MathXL for School, and Physical Manipulatives Kit.
Students will use online resources such as Khan Academy, Edmodo and DeltaMath and other
mathematics websites throughout the year.

There are a total of six textbooks that will be issued to your daughter throughout the school year. She is
expected to bring them to class every day. Please take care of the textbooks as she must return each one
at the end of each unit. Those who do not do so will be held accountable at the end of the school year.

Project-based Learning Opportunities/Assessments: At the end of a unit, students will apply
mathematical concepts and skills to explore of real-world challenges and problems through the following
mathematics projects and performance tasks:

Unit 1: My Favorite Number

Unit 2: Baking for the Holidays
Unit 3: Online Shopping
Unit 4: Design an Aquarium
Unit 5: Mathematics Board Game
Unit 6: Statistical Exploration: Is Anyone Typical?

Year-end Assessment: New York State Assessments are scheduled on May 2 4, 2017.

Communication: I look forward to meeting you in person at our Back to School night, Parent-Teacher
Conferences and other events in TYWLS of Queens. Please do not hesitate to call me at school (Tel.
718 725-0402) or send an e-mail or via Pupilpath at any time. My e-mail is ecalvelo@tywlsqueens.org.
Student progress in each grade component will be posted in Pupilpath on a regular basis.

Extra Help: Should your daughter need additional help, tutoring is available on Tuesdays, during her lunch break
from 10:32 11:15 am. Additionally, after school tutoring is offered on Tuesdays from 2:20 2:55 pm.
