Class Sections: 1007

Date: 11 March 2017
Purpose

In this lab, we have the purpose to study the transport of water to solute concentration

by the process called osmosis.

Hypothesis

If soaking the jelly and potato in distilled water, then the size of them will expand.

But if soaking the jelly and potato in salt water, then the size of them will shrink.

Material List

-6 Beakers

-Electronic Balance

-Distilled water

-Concentrated slat water

-2 Jellies

-2 Potato pieces

-Calculator

-Knife

-Weighing paper

-Markers

-Gloves

-Lab coat

-Googles

Methods

1. Use the knife to cut a popato into three equal pieces

2. Put a piece of weighing paper on the electronic balance, press set to zero and put a jelly and

potato on it
3. Record the data
4. Fill two beakers with distilled water and put the jelly into the first beaker and fill second

beaker with potato then use the maker to label the beaker
5. Fill two beakers with concentrated salt solution and put the jelly into the first beaker and fill

second beaker with potato then use the maker to label the beaker
6. Put potato and jelly into an empty beaker
7. Wait for one hour then record the data from each beakers

Analyzing results question

1.What happened to the jellies after being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an
hour? Why? The concentration of the distilled water volume and mass increased and became
higher than the salt water that are in jelly, because the concentration in the distilled water is
less that the salt water and the osmosis will happened when the high concentration to low
centration. Besides, the mass and volume in the distilled water are increase, however, mass
and volume in the salt water are decrease.

2.What happened to the potato after being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an
hour? It is almost similar to jelly that, the concentration of the distilled water volume and
mass increased and became higher than the salt water that are in jelly, because the
concentration in the distilled water is less that the salt water and the osmosis will happened
when the high concentration to low centration. Besides, the mass and volume in the distilled
water are increase, however, mass were increase but, the volume were decrease.

Conclusion
This experiment shows how osmosis works. Osmosis is an important process which
occurs in cells. In an experiment, distilled water with higher concentration of water that objects in
distilled water are getting bigger because the water molecules move from higher concentration to
lower concentration passing through semipermeable membrane. Salt water combining between salt
and water that make less concentration of water molecules. Water move from inside the object to
outside solution.
