Course Description: Welcome to United States History Part I. Students will be exploring social studies topics
concerning the formation of the U.S. to the break out of the Civil War. All students will be required to conduct
research, type papers, post comments on online discussions via Edmodo, and be creative in preparation for the
8th grade exit project the following year. Students will participate in rigorous activities that involve
defining, analysis, monitoring, and discussion of key concepts of U.S. history. Late homework and
projects will not be accepted, however, there are opportunities for revision. If a student is absent they have one
day to make up the homework. This course will provide the students will the literacy skills that they will need to
take the Common Core ELA assessment, which they will take between March 28thth- 30th 2016.

Resources: This course will utilize a wide range of resources to meet the needs of all learners. We will
incorporate the use of film excerpts, educational video segments, visual and written primary source documents,
and graphic organizers.

This course will use real-world rigorous activities and assessments including: class discussions, Socratic
Seminars, debates, mock trials, role plays, investigations, simulations, and Common Core expository and
argumentative essays.

One-subject spiral notebook with 3 holes (no exceptions)
1 2 pocket folders

Extra Help: Extra will be available for those who need it. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns.

Attendance Expectations: All students are expected to attend class daily and promptly. Any student who is
absent must provide a signed note from a parent/guardian. Excessive absence and tardiness will lead to a
reduction of the students overall grade for the course, which can lead to failure of the course.
