Class: English 110 World Literature- F Period - W day

I entered the classroom at 2:15.

Abby projected a Do Now activity on the front board. She circulated throughout the classroom
listening to student conversations.

At 2:16, Abby asked the students to share their insights from the Do Now activity with the class.
She also asked the students to explain the point of yesterday's exercise (trying to divide one pie
to share with 21 people). Several students raised their hands and provided responses to Abby's
questions.

At 2:21, Abby concluded the exercise, summarizing comments. She explained that when
reading nonfiction, that students would need to use some of these strategies in their reading.

At 2:23, Abby explained that the next activity was a front loading activity. She told the students
that they should to go the class Google classroom site and read the text about how to deliver a
book talk. These directions were also projected on the front board.

At 2:26, Abby warned the students that they would only have 30 seconds left to complete the
reading exercise.
Next, she asked the students to scroll through the document and find their name. She
recommended that they highlight their name and the calendar date that they would present their
book talk. She also advised that they set a calendar reminder a few days before this due date.

Abby asked the students to signify that they were set by showing "thumbs up." The students did
as they were directed.

At 2:29, Abby reviewed the information from the reading and presented the students with a book
talk model. She noted that this book talk will serve as class prayer each day (as a
contemplative activity). Abby reviewed a sample book talk/prayer with the students. She
demonstrated how the students would present their book talk/prayer. Several students added
intentions to this prayer activity.

At 2:33, Abby asked the students if they had questions about this assignment. Several students
raised their hands to ask a question.

I left the classroom at 2:34.

Comments

During the initial large group sharing of the information from the Do Now activity, most of the
students who provided answers came from one side of the classroom. Abby challenged
students on the other side of the room to provide a response. After a couple of minutes, several
initially reticent students, provided responses. Nicely done.
The book talk activity sounds like a great way to allow the students an opportunity to practice
public speaking. Abby prepared the information, examples, and the calendar in order to
thoroughly explain this lesson. Providing an example and demonstrating expectations for the
presentation is an excellent way to clearly introduce this task. Well done!

Thank you for welcoming me into your class. Please let me know if you would like to discuss
this in greater detail.
