I am writing you on behalf of the Society of Rogerian Scholars 2011 Conference Planning
Committee to invite you to become a sponsor of this event. The annual conference which
attracts participants both nationally and internationally will be held in Greensboro, NC this
year at the Grandover Hotel and Golf Resort on October 7th, 8th, and 9th. The Society of
Rogerian Scholars is a group of nurses from clinical practice, education, research, and lead-
ership who are dedicated to advancing whole person individualized care to individuals,
families, and communities. They share in common an interest in supporting people to reach
their fullest health potentials through encouraging personal power and participation in care.
They are guided by a vision of nursing science and art developed by Dr. Martha E. Rogers
and expressed in her work and writings. Dr. Rogers devoted her professional life to helping
nurses at all levels appreciate the importance of recognizing the wholeness of people and the
value of participating actively with them in shaping their health care. The conference will
bring together practitioners, researchers, educators, and administrators who will share their
work and perspectives in the hopes of advancing health care as envisioned by Dr. Rogers.
The success of this event is credited largely to our sponsors who lend their names and finan-
cial support to the event. The money we raise each year goes to furthering education
through scholarships and conferences.
We welcome your support and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please
return your sponsorship commitment in the enclosed envelope. Thank you in advance for
your willingness to support the Society of Rogerian Scholars in making a difference in the
nursing care of individuals, families, and communities.
In 1954, Martha E. Rogers became chair of the Department of Nurse Education at New York
University. With Rogerss leadership, NYU became one of the first universities to treat nurs-
ing as a science with a distinct body of knowledge developed through research. Rogers
ground-breaking model for the Science of Unitary Human Beings provided a theoretical ba-
sis for nursing practice, education, and research. She published An Introduction to the Theo-
retical Basis of Nursing in 1970. She served NYU as a professor and head of the Division of
Nursing until 1975, continuing as professor until her retirement in 1979. Dr. Rogers was
widely known for her work and actively presented and consulted nationally and internation-
ally until the time of her death on March 13, 1994. The idea for the Society of Rogerian Schol-
ars was born in the living room of Martha Rogers' New York City apartment in November,
1986. A small group of individuals were fortunate in having the opportunity to meet with
Dr. Rogers twice a month for ongoing inquiry into the Science of Unitary Human Beings. Re-
alizing that few people had this opportunity, they explored how to facilitate discussion and
networking efforts among the widest possible audience. We decided that the best vehicle
would be a formal organization that could provide services such as publishing a newsletter
and sponsoring seminars. The annual conference represents the ongoing develop-
ment and application of Rogers work.
