Email to Principal

Good morning (Principal),

For science week I would like to hold a STEM event with the year five students
and extend it to the other students in our school. I would like to open it up to
students from years three to six. The STEM event I would like to run would be
the Catapult challenge. Where students design and create a catapult you use in a
competition at the end of the day. I would like to run the event in three session
from 11:00pm to 3:45pm. I would invite a special guest speaker and a judge. I
plan to ask the P&C for some funds and also allow them to cater a light afternoon
tea and charge a small cost to donate to the P&C. my guest speaker will be a
STEM expert. The speaker I have in mind is Mr Tunnah who has taught science
and been a HOD for a few years, he is currently the acting principal at the school
he is at now. Students will enjoy this challenge but it also will be an engaging and
educating experience. To will exposed student to the learning of science and
maths as well as technology/design.
I am emailing to get your approval on this event before I take it to the teachers
of the years 3-6 classes. This could provide teachers a chance to combine their
classes of student not participating and then the teachers could do a rotational
roster of non-contact time.

This event will meet the following curriculum content descriptor:

Mathematics:

Conduct chance experiments, identify and describe possible outcomes and

recognise variation in results (ACMSP067)
Identify questions or issues for categorical variables. Identify data sources
and plan methods of data collection and recording (ACMSP068)
Estimate, measure and compare angles using degrees. Construct angles
using a protractor (ACMMG112)
Science:

With guidance, plan and conduct scientific investigations to find answers

to questions, considering the safe use of appropriate materials and
equipment (ACSIS054)
Compare results with predictions, suggesting possible reasons for
findings (ACSIS215)
With guidance, plan and conduct scientific investigations to find answers
to questions, considering the safe use of appropriate materials and
equipment (ACSIS065)
Decide variables to be changed and measured in fair tests, and observe
measure and record data with accuracy using digital technologies as
appropriate (ACSIS087)
Design Technology:
Investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour
of a product or system (ACTDEK011)
Generate, develop, and communicate design ideas and decisions using
appropriate technical terms and graphical representation
techniques (ACTDEP015)
Plan a sequence of production steps when making designed solutions
individually and collaboratively (ACTDEP018)
Select appropriate materials, components, tools, equipment and
techniques and apply safe procedures to make designed
solutions (ACTDEP026)
Develop project plans that include consideration of resources when
making designed solutions individually and collaboratively (ACTDEP028)

Please could you consider this and then get back to me with your decision when
possible please.
