Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Naval Basics

Straight from the beginning of the game you will be handed a ship and
given control over the seas. In order to excel at the naval battles, as well
as get around, you must first master the handling and firing of the ship.

Sailing at Full Sail makes the ship faster, but will reduce
maneuverability.
Sailing at Half Sail allows you to make tight turns in the open sea or
around obstacles.
Rogue Winds will push a ship at Full Sail into obstacles, even if you
steers completely in the opposite directions. To counteract this, you
should sail at Half Sail or alternate between the two.
The mini-map shows the direction of the wind with an arrow and color
depending on your direction within the arrow. Use the indicator to help
the Jackdaw maintain a high speed by always sailing with or across it,
rather than against it.

Naval Weapons & Tips

Unlike the previous Assassin's Creed, where you selected your ammo
type with the directional pad, Assassin's Creed IV has you attack being
based on where you are attacking from and the range. The following is a
list of the weapons and how/when you can obtain them.
Broadside Cannon Round Shot

This is the standard shot on either the right or left of tha Jackdaw through
Manual Aim. This is the standard weapon that you will end up using the
most in combat due to its solid damage and aiming flexibility.
10

Available: Default Ammo: Unlimited Range (m): 0-250

Broadside Cannon Heavy Shot

This is used automatically when you fire a broadside without using

Manual Aim, "blind fire". It deals incredible amounts of damage, but at
close range only. Best used only when you pass close to a ship.

Available: Upgrade Ammo: Limited Range (m): 0-150

Swivel Gun -

Used to fire on weak spots exposed when you inflict damage on other
ships with any other weapon. Hold to align the reticle and release when
lined up. This is great for doing damage during reload times.

Available: Default Ammo: Unlimited Range (m): 0-300

Chase Cannon Chain Shot

This is the weapon used when you aim forward off the Jackdaw's bow
with Manual Aim. Though not powerful, the weapon does have a stun
effect that can be useful when you want to avoid an enemy broadside.

Available: Default Ammo: Unlimited Range (m): 0-350

Mortar -

One of the most powerful weapons due to its damage and range, it is a go
to weapon against large ships. The drawback is the limited ammo that
you will want to stock up on after every major naval battle.

Available: Upgrade Ammo: Limited Range (m): 150-500

11

Fire Barrels -

Used when firing from the back of the Jackdaw, you can Manual Aim
these onto ships that pass behind you when they attempt to ram you. You
can also drop them and shoot them with the Swivel Gun as other ships
pass.

Available: Default Ammo: Limited Range (m): 40-55

Ram -

The ram is simply used when you run your ship into another, bow first.
The greater the speed, the more damage upon impact. Make sure you
brace just before impact to avoid heavy damage to the Jackdaw.

Available: Default - -

Attacking
Try to avoid approaching ships directly at their sides, where you
are vulnerable to broadsides.
Try to keep the majority of enemy ships on one side of the
Jackdaw to keep a handle of the situation and do the most damage with
the broadsides, but note that cannons can be fired independently and
have their own timers.
Holding Manual Aim longer will focus the broadside attack range
and make it more powerful.
Use the waves to avoid fire while curving shots over the waves to
get good shots in while protecting yourself.
Use the Jackdaw's speed and the enemy ships blind spots to get in
safe shots while the enemy ship tries to turn to get its sights on you.

Boarding
Once you have weakened an enemy ship enough to reduce its damage to
the red section the ship will become immobile. You then have two
12

options: sink the ship or board it. If you sink the ship you will only gain
half of the cargo on the ship as collectibles after the ship has fully sunk.
On the other hand, boarding it has some benefits and drawbacks. While
boarding ships is time consuming and can be costly on your crew stats,
boarding automatically ends the attack by other ships until you defeat
the ship. This can be a benefit to you, allowing you to board and repair
the Jackdaw in mid combat in large naval battles.
After engaging in a boarding you can use the Swivel Gun, only a
few feet from the helm, to get in five free shots while the Jackdaw pulls
up next to the ship.
The mast closest to the helm has a lift that can be used to reach the
rigging and cross to the other ship to help you reach some of the
boarding objectives, such as killing Scouts in the masts.
When killing enemies on the deck of the other ship focus on
weaker enemies to allow for kill streaks and avoid Brutes and Officers.
Take note of the red barrels on the deck, powder reserves. These
can be shot or lit to destroy the enemies standing around it.

Boarding Objectives

Objective Notes

You can use the Swivel Gun to thin enemy numbers and
Kill the Crew
then head over to the enemy ship and finish off the rest.

These are usually Scouts archetypes rather than Officers,

Kill Officers so you can use counterattacks and kill streaks to take
them out.

You can use the Swivel Gun to try and kill these guys
Kill Captain(s) before boarding or air assassinate them. If needed, use
Smoke Bombs to get quick kills.

Kill Scouts On larger ships the Marksmen are commonly a boardng

13

objective. You can use the lifts on either ship to reach the
masts and defeat these enemies.

Destroy The powder reserves should be a target with the Swivel

Powder Gun ever time you board a ship, so having them as an
Reserves objective is nothing special.

Destroy Ship Complete all of the other objectives and then make your
Flags way to the flags.

Sometimes you may come across an incapacitated ship that you did not
attack with an empty deck and a crew already dead. These ships can not
be boarded in the standard fashion and must be boarded by manually
pulling up to them and swimming/jumping across. The loot will be
located in boxes, that can be opened, and the dead Captain can be looted
for some cash. On the other hand, you can just fire on it to destroy it.

Naval Combat Guide
Naval Combat is a complex affair in Assassin's Creed IV, with many
weapons, tough enemies and complicated upgrade system. Once you get
a handle on the basics of Naval combat, however, taking on even the
toughest opponents, like Man-o-wars, Forts and Legendary
Shipsbecomes fun and lucrative, if never quite easy.
See our Legendary Ships Guide for more on the toughest Naval
Combat opponents.
Weapons and Upgrades
14

The Jackdaw's defenses and offenses can be upgraded, but some

upgrades are not as good as others. You can check out the list of
upgrades here, as well as recommended upgrades for your ship's needs
in the main game. Here we'll discuss what weapons you should upgrade
purely for successful Naval Combat, and how to use them effectively.
Note that [1] require both Reales (See the Money Making Guide) and
Resources like Wood, Metal and Cloth, which can be acquired mainly
through Naval Combat. The other two resources, Sugar and Rum, can
be sold for a massive amount of money, and they can't be used for
anything else. Sell your Sugar and Rum!
Early Upgrades
As you start your seafaring adventure and acquire a ship of your own, it
won't be the terror of the high seas that you captain in your dreams.
Focus on upgrading these items early on in your travels, as it will help
you take down bigger and tougher ships despite being a substantially
weaker craft.

Heavy Shot -- This is extremely powerful ammo for your Broadside

Cannons. You can fire your Broadside Cannons by looking out the side
of your ship, but to use Heavy Shot you have to not hit the AIM
button. The game doesn't make this apparent. Just hit FIRE. You can
still aim this low, extremely powerful fire by lining up your ship
perpendicularly with its target, but you can't aim it vertically. Aim for the
lowest part of the hull. You need to purchase Heavy Shot, unlike your
normal cannon ammo, Round Shot. You can do so, after purchasing the
initial upgrade, at weapon shops.
Broadside Cannons -- These cannons line the side of your ship and can
be aimed vertically. Look to the side of your ship and hold AIM and then
FIRE to fire them. It is preferable that you use Heavy Shot at all times,
but your normal Round Shot can be upgraded to a very powerful level --
be sure to make adding cannons a priority.
Hull Armor -- The reasoning behind this upgrade should be obvious.
The further you progress through the game, enemy ships and forts will
become larger and more powerful. Upgrading your hull armor may be
15

expensive, both to your coin purse and crafting supplies, but is well
worth it - especially as you encounter more ferocious opponents on the
high seas. Once you discover and craft the 'Elite Hull Armor,' you'll also
gain the ability to ram other ships while taking no damage, regardless of
whether you brace for impact or not. It will also add cooler darker
colours to your ship--always a plus.

Swivel Guns -- These guns can be used to take out small targets
highlighted on an enemy ship in red and yellow. To see these targets,
you must do some damage to the ship's hull with your Broadside
Cannons. Once you see these weak points light up, hold the SWIVEL
GUN button shown until a reticle moves of the spot, then let go to fire it.
Activate Swivel Guns while your other weapons are reloading. They do
a great deal of damage. Note that the Elite upgrade for these allows you
to hold the button and continuously fire the swivel guns at the targets at
a much faster pace.

Chase Cannons -- These guns fire Chain Shot, which does little
damage, but temporarily stuns ships, preventing them from firing or
maneuvering quickly. This is extremely important for early battles with
Men o' War andLegendary Ships. You can fire your Chase Cannons by
facing directly at a ship and hitting the AIM button, then hitting FIRE.
Aim for masts to slow ships down and stun them, then maneuver behind
the ship and stay behind it, firing your Round Shot, Heavy Shot and
Swivel Guns. This tactic will help take down the toughest enemies in the
game.
Secondary Upgrades
These are upgrades to the Jackdaw that are best added once you've
progressed a little further through the game.
Ram -- While ramming into a ship twice the size of yours isn't
necessarily the smartest idea, an upgraded ram will greatly benefit your
crew once you've begun encountering mid-size ships more frequently.
Brigs and frigates will sustain a considerable amount of damage from
being rammed, and most schooners and gunboats will be sunk or
16

disabled in just one hit. Paired with the Elite Hull upgrade, the ram
becomes especially useful since the Jackdaw will no longer take damage
while ramming enemy vessels.

Mortars -- This long-distance cannon is mainly useful for Forts, but

with a little of practice you can also hit moving targets like ships with it.
Note that it alerts enemies from a great distance, ruining an effective
surprise attack with a more powerful weapon, like the broadside
cannons. Mortars are activated by hitting the MORTAR AIM button and
then FIRE, usually the left shoulder button. Pass the white aiming reticle
over an enemy until it turns red and fire. However, if the element of
surprise isn't exactly your style, mortars are a great way to inflict a fair
amount of damage on large, slow ships at the start of a battle. You can
also take out any number of smaller, weaker ships from afar without
having to bother with a coordinated attack.
Fire Barrels -- These floating explosive should stay low on your list of
priority upgrades. Unless an enemy is directly behind you, nearly
touching your hull, they will avoid these, rendering them useless. Look
over the rear of your ship and hit FIRE to drop them. You can use Swivel
Guns to detonate them for a large blast radius, but direct contact will set
them off as well.
Battle Tactics
To take out the toughest ships follows this simple formula (see video
above to see it in action).
Stun the ship with Chase Cannons (Chain Shot): You should start the
battle this way to give yourself time to maneuver into attack position.
Keep in mind that with the largest vessels (especially Legendary Ships)
the stunning effect caused by the chain shot will still be minimal, adding
only a few seconds here and there to your window of attack.

Maneuver the Jackdaw behind the enemy ship: Directly

perpendicular, or ideally somewhere near 45 degree angle to its rear,
with your broadside cannons facing its rear and hitting a a large amount
of lower hull.
17

Fire: Stay there, carefully speeding up and slowing down and rotating
and firing Heavy Shot at its rear and rear sides, but staying out of the
firing angle of its cannons. Aim low as possible and fire your Heavy
Shot at it repeatedly, firing the Swivel Guns while your Broadside
Cannons recharge.

Repeat: You can repeat this process if the enemy ship outmaneuvers
you, just speed away and come about, firing your Chase Cannons to stun
the ship and start anew.
Other Naval Combat Tips
The toughest ships are in the south, including Man o' Wars and
other tough ships.
Take on tough ships alone -- if you pursue a ship without firing, it
may split off from its armada. However, if there are small gunboats or
other weak ships accompanying the target ship, you can use them to
repair the Jackdaw between attacks on the larger ship. Just board them
and choose the Repair Jackdaw option after that sequence!
Take out Forts to eliminate hostile territories for easier hunting of
enemy ships.
You don't have to battle a ship to capture it. Simply maneuver into
a ship's path, climb out of the Jackdaw and board the enemy ship
and you can kill its entire crew. Once this is done, return to your ship
and you can pull up alongside it and capture it. This does not work if
you are engaged in battle, so you'll need to sneak aboard. It takes a
while, and it's not as flashy, but you can capture giant ships early using
this method. Note: This does not work for Legendary Ships, which kill
you if you touch their hull.
Boarding

When you use the Spyglass to spot a ship, you can see its resources/loot
and then make the decision to board it. If you sink the ship, you will
only receive half the resources on board. Note that Royal Convoys will
18

still give you the full amount of the cash even if you sink them. You
cannot boardLegendary Ships.
After seeing the sails on the ship fall--or the health fall into the red--pull
up near the side of the stunned ship and hold the button shown. The
region you can stop in is a large rectablge on either side of the stunned
ship, highlighted in the water. If you damage the ship, with your Ram or
otherwise, you risk sinking it. you can order the crew to throw hooks
over and board the ship. You can now swing across using a rope.
The goal is to eliminate the enemy captain. You can freely attack the
ship's enemies, climbing the mast for air attacks. You can also use
aSwivel Gun to attack the enemy ship. Aim for highlighted enemies or
Powder Stores.
Capturing some ships will require you to kill two enemy scouts on the
upper levels of the ship. It's very tempting to take the shortcut up by
using the improvised "elevator,' however this is very risky. The enemy
at the top will be waiting for you and will often strike before you have
any chance to counter, sending you plummeting back down to the deck.
The fall will kill you or leave you inches from death. Take the slower
route and climb up. While not as flashy, you do not risk a teeth-grinding
death by gravity.
Once the ship is captured you have 3 options as to what you do with it.
Lower Wanted Level - This not only lowers your wanted level, but
also gives you more crew members than what you get from just
capturing the ship.
Send ship to the Kenway's Fleet minigame. Replace your weaker
ships with larger ships. You can also sell these off for massive amounts
of diamonds (the in-game-minigame currency)
Repair The Jackdaw - If your ship took damage in the fight, you
can use materials from the defeated vessel to repair your own ship.
Enemy Ship Types
19

Man o' War-- Largest kind of enemy ship. "Capable of carrying

100 cannons," carries all types of resource in large amounts and
money as well. Successfully boarding these requires multiple
objectives and the defeat of 20 men
Frigate -- A ship that gets harder to fight over time, carries all types
of resource in medium amounts. Boarding these require a secondary
objective as well as defeating 15 men.
Brig -- A medium-to-hard ship battle, carries all types of resource
in small amounts and uses it's ramming attack liberally. Boarding these
requires the defeat of 10 men.
Schooner -- An easy battle, carries Rum and Sugar. Boarding these
requires defeating 5 men.
Gunboat -- A small ship with little cannons, only carries ammo.
You cannot board these.
Secondary objectives include: Killing scouts, killing officers, killing the
captain, destroying powder reserves, or destroying the ship's flag
Note that you can use your swivel gun to fire 5 miniature cannon balls at
the ship you are attempting to board. In the case of schooners or brigs
these can fulfill the boarding requirement if aimed correctly.
The following video shows what the attack looks like typically from
targeting the enemy, firing on them, and then finally boarding them.

Environmental Tactics
20

Dynamic weather can change the entire tone of a battle. Storms exist in
the environment, and you can choose to avoid them or plunge right in.
Enemy ships will also be affected by the weather, allowing you to gain a
tactical advantage if you play your cards right. Avoid Rogue Waves
(steer into them and brace) and water spouts (just don't go near them)
which will damage you as well as your enemy.
Another tactic includes using waves as a form of protection. A wall of
water acts as a kind of shield from cannonballs, so an advantageous use
of placement on choppy seas will prevent you from being harmed by
enemy ballistics.

Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag Naval Combat Guide Tips and

Upgrades
When Assassins Creed 4 was announced to be pirates themed game, I
was curious to see how Ubisoft will integrate the Pirate lifestyle into the
Animus world. I have to say, they did a pretty good job.
However, since this is the first time you will be handling ships in an
Assassins Creed game, you may have a hard time in dealing with
various possibilities on the sea.
Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag Naval Combat
In order to increase your survival chances on the brutal sea, you should
have information on different sea related elements, especially when you
are battling your way through enemy ships and forts.
Following guide will shed light on every aspect of naval warfare in
Assassins Creed 4 along with some useful tips to help you dominate the
sea.
21

Naval Interface
When you will board your ship for the first time, you will see a number
of options on your screen. Most of them are self explanatory so I will
just summarize them for you.
Health Bar
The meter on the top left on your screen shows the damage level (health)
of your ship. When the bar gets red, your ship will be destroyed and ypu
will start from the last saved checkpoint.
Those health bars will restore partially when you are not in the battle.
You can also choose to repair your ship by raiding other ships or using
harbormaster.
Crew Meter
It will tell you the number/effectiveness of your crew members on board.
Your crew members can die and you can also recruit new crew members
by saving people on sea or raiding other ships.
Wanted Meter
The Red Swords above your health bars is basically your wanted level. It
will tell you the difficulty of pirate hunters who will pursue you for the
bounty. Its recommended that you keep it low by avoiding useless fuss.
Sailing Options
There will be different options on your screen that will tell you how to
maneuver your ship on the sea or how to fire cannons. You can read their
use easily on screen.
Your crew especially your quartermaster will keep providing you with
useful information in different situation so you should not ignore his
voice.
Minimap
Last but not the least, minimap will detail you about different objects on
the map. If you are not sure about an object or an area, open up the map
in full screen and then just move your cursor over the location or object
you want to know about. You can zoom in or zoom out the map by using
the left analog stick.
22

How to Mark Enemy Ships during Battle

In Assassins Creed 4, you will come across multiple battles where you
will have to deal with more than one ships. Its always beneficial to
know about the strength of the opponent ship before you engage.
You can use the Spyglass feature to collect information about the enemy
ship or different suspicious areas.
You can also choose to mark dangerous ships using your custom marker
so that you can prioritize your targets. Its recommended that you take
out the weaker ships first and then go after the bigger ones. You can use
the small ships to repair your ship during the battle.
Naval Weapons
Whenever you are in battle, you should know the strength of weapons.
Like in real-time, Jackdaw will have weapons on sides front and back.
The types of weapons are as follows:
Round Shots
You can use the basic weaponry of your ship. Round shot will be
available right from the start, and you can upgrade them for more
damage. You will use them basically to expose the weak parts of the
enemy ship.
Heavy Shots
As the name indicates, these shots will do heavy damage to the enemy.
They wont be available by default, but you can purchase heavy shots as
upgrades to your ship.
Naval Ram
This structure will be found at the front end of the ship. You can use it
effectively to ram enemy ships with reduced damage taken.
Swivel Guns
These weapons are located on the side of the ship. While boarding, you
can use them to take out enemies from distance. While sailing, you will
be prompted to press a button (Y in case of xbox 360) to destroy one of
the cannons on the enemy ship or the fort. Swivel guns are available on
the Jackdaw right from the start.
Chainshots
These are basically two cannons connected with a chain. Chainshot
Weapons can be found at the front end of the ship. You can use them to
23

slow down the enemy ships that are trying to ram you over. Chainshots
are available from the start.
Mortars
They are high damaging shots which can be fired above in the air. You
can use them to target distant enemy and deal a hefty amount of damage.
Mortars are available by default so will have to purchase them as
upgrades.
Explosive Barrels
Explosive barrels are a useful way to watch out your back. You can order
your men to throw barrels into the sea which will server the purpose like
sea mines. Enemy ships will also throw these barrels so watch out for
them too.
Grappling Hooks
These hooks are used to bring enemy ships closer while boarding. You
can buy upgrades for these hooks like other weapons to increase their
effectiveness.
Naval Warfare Tips
Alright, now that you know about the weapons at your disposal, lets
discuss about the actual battles. In the beginning, you may want to go
head on and just destroy the enemy ships. However, there will be some
ships which you will need to approach carefully.
Use the spyglass to know about the strength of the ship. Its
recommended that you dont stay static and keep your ship moving to
reduce the incoming damage. Keep an eye on the mini map so that you
dont crash onto any rock or small Island.
While aiming your shots, keep in mind that they take some time to reach
the target. If you are moving too fast, you should adjust your aim
accordingly.
Drop barrels behind whenever you are being chased. Furthermore, keep
an eye on the enemy barrels on the water to avoid unnecessary damage.
If your Ram is upgraded, you can also choose to smash the smaller
ships.
Weather and water waves have a crucial role to play in naval battle. If
you are in a storm, it will be hard for you and your enemy to aim. You
should keep your sheep slow and steady.
24

Look out for the big tide. You should not head straight into the tide
rather keep your sides of the ship towards the rising tide minimize the
damage. These high tides can be beneficial for you as they can deal a lot
of damage to the enemy ships.
Mortars can be extremely useful as they have high range and damage.
You can use them to initiate the battles with the ship which do not have
mortars. Since they have high range and they go high in the air, you
should be careful in selecting the target especially when its moving at a
faster pace.
Your positioning during the naval battles in Assassins Creed 4 can be
important. If enemy has ally ships around, they wont fire at you unless
the line of sight is clear. So, you can use it for your own benefit. If you
are challenging bigger ships, you should use the chainshot/mortar combo
from behind to deal damage. If enemy ship is also firing mortars, you
should increase your mobility to minimize the damage taken.
You can also use bracing (a defensive technique) to minimize the
damage caused by enemy attacks, collisions, rogue waves and water
spouts. By pressing left thumb pad, you will activate bracing which
basically commands your crew to take cover. You can put it to better use
by predicting the imminent attacks from the enemy ships.
Boarding Tips
After you have reduced the enemy ships health to the minimum, you
will have two options; either you can sink it, or you can choose to board
it. If you choose to board, you need to use the Swivel gun (just beside
the steering wheel) first.
With the help of Swivel gun, you can take out a few of the enemy
soldiers before boarding the ship. Look for the red barrels on the ship
and shoot them to deal explosive damage and kill more enemies.
After using the Swivel gun, you are required to move onto the enemy
ship.
Fastest method is through the string just beside the swivel. You will land
at the rare end of the ship. Now, the fight on the enemy ship can be
tricky so you need to be patient.
Your crew members will be assisting you, but you will have take out
most of the enemies yourself. Stay at defensive and hit on the counter.
25

You can also choose to run along the ship and assassinate enemies on the
go.
After the enemies surrender, you will have three options; you can repair
your own ship, you can add the ship to your fleet, or you can decrease
your wanted level.
Choose it wisely as it can affect your near future. If you are in a long
fight, go for the repairs, and if you have a very high wanted level, lower
your level as hunters can be a real pain.
If you like the ships strength, and you think that you can survive
without repairing the Jackdaw, you should send the ship to your fleet.
You will get some resources as a loot in any case. They can be used for
upgrades and crafting.

Keep in mind that when you are in the boarding process, your ship wont
be destroyed by any other enemy ship. You can exploit it to repair your
ship repeatedly during the long battles or destroying heavily fortified
forts.

Jackdaw Upgrades

As mentioned before, almost everything on Jackdaw can be upgraded.

Its just the matter of choice depending on resources you have. You can
upgrade at your own ship, or you can get those upgrades via a merchant.

Many upgrades can easily be purchased using reales (in-game currency)

but for some upgrades, you are going to need Cargo.

Cargo consists of materials, including sugar, wood, metal, cloth and

Rum. These resources can be gathered as a loot while sailing the sea, or
you can get them as a loot after you destroy ships. Capturing forts can
also get you descent amount of these resources.

If you want to upgrade Jackdaw fully, you will also need design plans
and most of them can be acquired by find buried treasures.
26

Now, if you are confused that what should be upgraded, go with a

balanced approach. I wont recommend that you waste your cash on
visual upgrades earlier in the game. First, buy the weapons that arent
available by default like the Mortars and then try increasing the defenses
of your ship.
In the middle stages, you should focus on increasing damage by
upgrading the normal and heavy shots. You can get all the information
about the requirements of the upgrades through in-game options.
Harpooning
Harpooning is an effective way of earning fast money. Its like hunting
on the sea.
You can kill whales, sharks and other sea creatures and gather them for
resources. In order to go hunting on sea, you need to have harpoon
upgrades.
If you see any whale while sailing, its location will be marked on your
map.
You can hunt it down immediately or later. Edward and a few of his
crew members will set sail on a small boat to hunt down these sea
creatures. It wont be a QTE, and you will have to reduce the health of
the creature to capture it.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag - Naval Combat Guide

Not a fan of Davey Jone's locker? Find out how to prevent the Jackdaw
from making frequent visits.

Published 3 years, 6 months ago about Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
by Bryan Dawson

Naval combat is a huge part of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. It's

required to get through the main story of the game, and essential if you
need to get money and resources to upgrade the Jackdaw. But you can't
just sail into battle, cannons blazing. If you don't have a proper strategy,
27

you won't get very far against the more formidable opponents on the
open seas.

Aim is Everything

There are two important aspects to aiming in Black Flag. The first is
aiming your broadside cannons and other close range attacks. If your
objective is to cripple an opposing ship as quickly as possible, you want
to aim for the lower hull region. The lower on the hull, the better.
Aiming for this area will almost always inflict the most damage at close
range.

If your objective is to prevent the enemy ship from maneuvering,

whether it's out of your attack range or into a better attack position for
their ship, aim for the masts and sails. It's best to use the chain shot fired
from the front of the Jackdaw to incapacitate a ship's mast and sails.
While not the most damaging option, it doesn't take much to bring down
a mast and sails, and you won't waste more powerful attacks by using
the chain shot. It's also effective if you're chasing an enemy, since the
chain shot at the front of the Jackdaw will be your primary attack option.

From long range, your best option is mortar shots. However, these are
harder to aim than closer attacks, such as the broadside cannons. It's rare
to see an opposing ship stationary in the ocean. Chances are they're
always on the move, especially when they're under attack. Because of
this, you have to watch their movement and aim the mortar shots to hit
ahead of the ship. It takes time for a mortar to reach a target once it's
been fired, which means you also need to account for the delay. The
farther away the target, the more lead time you need when aiming the
shot.

Jackdaw Upgrades

At the beginning of the game, the Jackdaw doesn't have much in the way
of offensive firepower. However, you can still take down low level
28

ships. As you continue to upgrade the Jackdaw, more and more resources
and money are required. You can continue to take down low level ships,
but that won't net you much money or precious metal required for many
of the Jackdaw's upgrades. You'll need to take down the higher level
ships to get a good amount of loot. To do so, you'll need to upgrade the
Jackdaw accordingly.
Focus on hull armor first, then upgrade the number of broadside cannons
and purchase the heavy shot. Add mortars to the Jackdaw, then increase
the strength of the heavy shot while also upgrading the number of
broadside cannons on the ship. Hull armor, broadside cannons, heavy
shot strength and mortar strength should be your top priorities when it
comes to upgrading the Jackdaw.

If you have money and resources left over, you can look into replacing
the fire barrels with chase cannons, getting more storage for ammunition
and adding to your crew quarters (essential for boarding large ships),
even increasing the strength of the chain and round shots.

It's All in the Approach

There are a few different ways to approach an enemy ship and remain
effective. From a distance of roughly 300-400 meters, use mortars as
your initial attack. Keep an eye on where the opponent moves and
counter accordingly. If they run, continue to chase them down with
mortar shots until you can close the distance enough to switch to
broadside cannons or chain shots. If they change course to move in your
direction, come to a stop and continue to use mortars until they're within
range of your other weapons. You can even turn around and keep them at
mortar range if you're a good shot.
Once an opposing ship is close enough to use broadside cannons or the
chain shot, approach from a 45-degree angle. Broadside cannons are
your most powerful weapon at close range. The key here is to attack
from an angle that allows you to use the Jackdaw's broadside cannons,
but makes it difficult for the opposing ship to counterattack with their
own broadside cannons. From a 45-degree angle, you can use the
29

Jackdaw's broadside cannons for an initial barrage, then turn toward the
rear of the opposing ship if it tries to get a better angle to use its
broadside cannons.
It's almost impossible to completely prevent an enemy ship from using
broadside cannons, but you can limit their target range. If you
continually attack from a 45-degree angle, pointing toward the rear of
the ship, it will considerably limit the target area for the broadside
cannons on the enemy ship. In fact, if you can keep your broadside
cannons pointed at the rear of the opposing ship, it will be very difficult
for the enemy to hit the Jackdaw with anything other than chase cannons
or fire barrels.

Turning on a Dime
Most people would assume that you should constantly stay on the move
during a naval battle. However, given the way the Jackdaw moves in
Black Flag, that's not always the best strategy. There are four sailing
speeds for the Jackdaw: stopped, one sail, two sails and travel speed.
The slower you're moving, the more agile the ship.
Even when the Jackdaw is stopped, because you're on the ocean, you're
never at a complete stop (unless you're anchored in a harbor). When the
ship is "stopped, you can make turns far more quickly than you can at
higher speeds. Use this to your advantage during naval combat. If an
enemy ship is using mortar shots, don't be afraid to come to a complete
stop to avoid the yellow and red circles that indicate mortar targeting.
You also shouldn't be concerned with stopping mid-battle to turn the
Jackdaw so an opposing ship doesn't have a good line of fire.
To be the most effective in battle, you should constantly adjust your
speed to match the situation at hand. If the enemy ship looks like it's on
course to ram the Jackdaw, come to a complete stop and turn to limit the
damage, or avoid the ship completely. If you're approaching with a good
angle of attack and the opposing ship turns to align its broadside
cannons, don't hesitate to stop or slow down so you can change your
angle of attack and potentially prevent the opposing ship from using
their broadside cannons effectively.
Pick Your Battles
30

There are a good number of ships roaming around the Caribbean. If you
attack one, there's a good chance many of the surrounding ships will join
in on the battle against the Jackdaw. For this reason, it's best to attack
ships that are alone or in small groups. Even the most powerful Jackdaw
can be taken down by a large number of weaker ships.
Always use the scope to determine the level of the ship you're about to
attack, and any surrounding ships. If there are several high-level ships in
close proximity to one another, it's best to look for a different target, or
wait until the ships separate a bit. Keep in mind, if you're in the midst of
a battle against multiple ships, you can incapacitate one ship and begin
the boarding process to immediately pause the battle against any other
ships. The other ships generally won't leave the area, but they will cease
attacking the Jackdaw until you've completed the boarding process and
pillaged the current ship.

Basic information | Naval battles AC IV: Black Flag Guide

Fighting naval battles is one of the key matters in Assassin's Creed IV:
Black Flag. Being unable to defeat the enemy ships, you will make it
more difficult for yourself to acquire valuable resources and money.
Each captain of a pirate ship needs to know how to eliminate the other
marine units and, this is what this chapter is devoted to explaining.
In comparison with its predecessor, which was innovative in this respect,
in the fourth installment the options of conducting fire are very
numerous. Suffice it to say that now you do not need to set your vessel
with the side board to the enemy sailing ship, various actions can also be
performed during pursuits or while escaping from the enemy.

donations
seems to be a growing trend among other contemporary guide writers, I
have
decided to put in the option to allow you to donate some money to me
for
helping you out if you wish to do so.

Although I make these guides for free in my spare time, I probably

dont
need to point out to gamers that purchasing games is an extremely
expensive
hobby (games in Australia cost on average $90 - $120) and writing
guides for
them can be a very long, incredibly difficult and thankless task at the
best
of times, but one that is very challenging and occasionally rewarding.

Considering you could be paying upwards of $20+ for guides in a game

shop,these
free and easily available guides make a cost-effective substitute. Whilst
most
are happy to use and move on without a word I would move that a
simple donation
is a great, easy way to say thanks if you feel that my guide has saved you
some

time, money and frustration in some small way.

By no means feel obligated to donate just for viewing my guide, but if

you are
feeling a little generous I certainly wont object! Any amount is
appreciated

\ 01. Locate the target ship using the spyglass. |
\ |
\ 02. Use a mortar to surprise the Templar fleet. |

\_________________________________________________________
____________|

=====================
Part 1: Naval Battle
=====================
As we begin, we will be sailing towards a group of ships in the distance.
We
need to sink these. From a distance, pull out your spyglass and use it to
look
at the largest of the four ships ahead. This is the Admirals ship and
identifying it with the spyglass will complete the first objective.

As you approach, use a mortar to initiate combat. This will fulfil the
second
of the two optional objectives. Focus on the large ship as you move in
and
39

continue to unleash mortars as you approach. As you arrive, veer off to

one of
the sides and use your heavy shot/broadside attacks on the admirals
ship
until it is disabled. Afterwards, take down the three escort vessels.
Fortuitously, they are quite weak so they wont take much to destroy.

Once all of the opposition ships have been destroyed, a scene will play
and a
dive spot will appear nearby. Sail over to this and dock to initiate a dive
sequence.

=====================
Part 2: Dive
=====================
From the diving bell swim directly to the northeast to find a chest
beneath
the second air barrel that you come across. Loot this and use the air
barrel
to refill your lungs. Swim back towards the diving bell and take a left
when
you are able towards the sunken ship. Use the seaweed on the ocean bed
to
avoid detection by the sharks swimming about.

As you arrive at the ship, just in front youll find a chest to loot. Do
so
and then use a nearby air barrel if you require it. Now we need to swim
upwards towards the deck of the shipwreck. Before you arrive however,
enter
the hole allowing you inside the hull. Swim to the southernmost room to
find
the chest with the objective inside.
40

Once you have looted it, turn to the right and youll notice a hole in
the wall
and a green objective marker indicating the diving bell in the distance.
Swim
over there, using the seaweed to avoid sharks where necessary and when
you
arrive, interact with it to return to the surface.

=====================
Part 3: Escape
=====================
Following the story sequence, an objective marker will appear in the
distance.
Sail towards this. As you do a large number of ships will appear and
converge
on your position. Continue to sail towards the marker, but try to take
down
the vessel that comes at you from the right as it will ram you if you let it
get close.

Once you reach the storm, youll need to keep an eye on the mini-
map for both
water spouts and rogue waves. Just to jog your memory, you want to
avoid the
water spouts by navigating around them and we can nullify the
damaging rogue
waves by piloting the ship directly into them front on. We simply need
to
make it through these obstacles until we reach the marker in the
distance. I
counted two of each before I arrived, so it shouldnt be too difficult!

=====================
Part 1: Chase
=====================
Following the introductory scene, well be on foot and have a nice
big machete
as a weapon. As we begin, youll see a man marked with a red target
marker
running away from you along a dirt trail. Chase after him and kill him
when
you catch up with him for a scene.

At this point you will unlock the achievement/trophy Liberation

Day.

=====================
42

Part 2: Tailing
=====================
For the moment at least we have a little bit of free-roam action to enjoy.
Our
ultimate goal is to reach the green objective marker, but feel free to have
a
look around and synchronise a waypoint or two. As we approach the
objective
marker, it will expand into a green search area. The guy we need to
locate is
in the north-western most part of the green zone, just next to the slave
auction. Youll need to use Eagle Vision to tag him.

Follow the target along the street to the east using the crowds, building
corners and occasional piece of foliage as cover. Hell only stop
once as you
go, so as long as you keep your distance and dont cause too much
of a
disturbance, you can follow him without too much trouble. After he
crosses the
river, he will enter a nearby building. Follow him inside.

=====================
Part 3: Eavesdrop
=====================
As you enter, the targets will be on the staircase to your left. We need to
listen to their conversation. Move over and stand with the group of
patrons at
the foot of the stairs to begin the sequence. Once started, the pair will cut
a lap of the brothel bar area, making 3 stops along the way. Follow them
around the room, whilst staying within the green circle. Use the standing
patrons as cover for the first two stops and then the table with the girl
and
two men along the right hand wall at the final stop.
43

Once the eavesdrop has been completed, approach the glowing woman.
Interact
with her for a scene to end the memory.

\_________________________________________________________
____________|

Following the previous missions completion, we will again have the

option for
a bit of free-roaming action on our hands if we choose to do so.
Ultimately,
we need to make our way over to the green search area within the
restricted
area at the plantation to the east.
44

=====================
Part 1: Infiltration
=====================
Once we enter the gate to the plantation, continue along the road for a
short
distance until you spot a building on your left. Make your way behind
this and
follow the narrow passage until you reach a shrub at the top of a wall at
the
end. Activate eagle vision here and look into the cane field below to spot
our
target. When it is safe to do so, hop the wall, stay in the cover of the
field
and speak to her.

Having spoken to the contact, a new objective marker will appear on the
map.
When the nearby guard is looking away, hop the fence near the target
and
continue along the left hand side of the area using the bushes and
buildings
as cover to avoid being spotted by the various guards. After passing
behind
the second building, you will be close to a small, less populated dirt path
leading linking this with another plantation area to the south. Wait for
the
guards to look away and run along the path to the new area. Hide in the
first
cane field.

Again, when no-one is looking leave the field and follow the dirt path to
the
northeast until you reach the green beam indicating the objective in a
small
45

clearing. Approach this for a scene.

=====================
Part 2: Attack
=====================
We will find ourselves in a new location now and are given the objective
of
killing all the overseers in the area. There are 14 hostiles and well
need to
clear them out to progress. Note that this section is the point at which the
two optional objectives are able to be achieved. Well be sneaky to
start with
so that we can earn the assassination from above objective.

Run across the rope bridge here and enter the bush at the end.
Assassinate the
guy nearby. Look off to the left and youll see a raised platform with
one
guard on top and another patrolling from there, down to your level and
then
back up again. Whistle the patroller over when you get a chance and
eliminate
him. Head up the stairs now and kill the guard at the top. From here,
look
back to the area below. There are another two guards standing before a
bush
ahead talking. Approach them from behind and double assassinate them.

From this bush, if you look opposite of the stairs we just came from, you
should see the top of a small wooden crane. Climb up on top of this and
from
here air assassinate the guard on the dock below. This will complete the
first
objective.
46

Now that the sneakiness is no longer necessary, we need to get some

guards
alerted to our presence to get the second objective done. Get spotted by
one
of the remaining guards on the docks and stand near the edge of some
water.
Wait for combat to begin and when you get a chance, grab a guard and
throw him
into the water nearby for the objective.

Once both objectives have been met, simply kill the remaining enemies.
After
killing the final overseer, approach the glowing man and interact with
him for
a scene.

=====================
Part 3: Chase
=====================
Following the scene, well need to chase the fellows in the boat.
Immediately
run over and use the rope lift nearby, race across the platform and hop
over
to the beam sticking out of the cliff face. Climb the wall on the next
platform
and then run along the fairly straightforward platforming path until you
arrive
outside. Quickly hop across the wooden poles to reach the island and run
to
the top of the hill here for a scene to end the mission proper.

Once the scene ending the previous mission is complete, youll still
be in the
Maroon hideout. You will have a quick tutorial flash up in regards to
liberation tasks and how they can help you. Following this, head over to
the
nearby objective marker and buy some blunderbuss ammunition. Once
you have
completed this task, you will be able to return to Port-au-Prince via the
green
objective marker at the exit.

Youll now also receive a quick crash course in the blunderbuss

(think bad-ass
shotgun). Following the pop-ups use the blunderbuss to aim at and
eliminate
the four guards ahead. Were now free to do as we please again.
48

Note that the next mission will not unlock until we have recruited 20
maroons
by completing liberation side-missions. You should have a couple of
recruits
in your back pocket already, but if not, no matter we are still going to
have
to do some liberating at this point. To liberate maroons we can do a
number of
things including:

Attack a plantation and kill all of its guards,

Save a fleeing slave from pursuers,
Free slaves from cages by looting the key from a guard,
Free slaves from a slave auction by either buying them for 500
Reales or
by killing all of the guards,
Free slaves being escorted through the streets,
Free slaves from punishment,
Carry injured slaves to a safe location.

Note: for more information regarding liberation missions, some

locations to
find each, and how to complete them, please look at the side-quest guide
below.
Link here: [ACFCLM].

Note that liberating citizens will not always yield the same number of
Maroons,
so you will likely need to accomplish a number of these tasks to
continue. As
we are already at the plantation, you may as well deal with the side-
mission.
Now depending on whether it is daytime or night time, you will have a
different
49

objective.

We need to sneak around the grounds and taking out 20 of the guards,
if
this is your first attempt at a plantation, keep in mind that as you take
out guards you want to stay undetected. If you are spotted, the guards
will start killing slaves and reducing the total number that you can
rescue. Eliminating the set number of guards undetected will earn
you 30
slaves and 10 maroons.

Night Time
_____________
If it is currently night time when you enter the plantation zone you
will
need to find and loot a key from a target guard (usually located near
the
manor house) inside the green investigation zone. Once we have his
key, we
then need to make our way over to three marked doors and unlock
them to
complete the side-mission. Doing so will earn you 30 slaves and 10
maroons.

Either way you go about it, once you are finished, head back to town and
complete any other tasks you feel like until you reach your quota I
would
recommend freeing at least 50 slaves in total (not maroons) to make the
next
liberation sequence a little shorter.
50

Either way, once you have recruited the desired number of Maroons, the
next
sequence will be unlocked.

\_________________________________________________________
____________|

Once you have freed 20 Maroons, this quest marker will become active
and is
located on a rooftop in the main city area of Port-au-Prince.

=====================
Part 1: Infiltrate
=====================
51

From the beginning, the game will pop-up a few screens explaining your
newest
acquisition firecrackers. When you are able, drop some firecrackers
into the
alley below and note pair of guards who come to investigate (note that
there
will be only one guard if you reload the checkpoint). When you are able
to
move again, turn around and jump across to the roof of the building
behind you.

Make your way over to the right (western side of the roof) and jump
onto the
branch. Follow the treetop path until you are above a set of stairs with
some
guards at the top. Look towards the base of the stairs and drop some
fireworks
here) this is a great place to earn the optional objective for drawing four
guards with firecrackers) and whilst the guards are distracted, follow the
branch you are on all the way west and hop into the hay stack near the
end.

Now we can either stay at ground level and work our way slowly over
towards the
objective markers using the shrubs and other hiding places, or we can
eliminate
the gunner on the roof further to the west and then use the rooftops to
approach the target marker. The latter option is much easier as you can
use the
rope lift directly below the gunner to gain easy access to the roof to
assassinate him, or pull him to you by sitting in his line of sight for a few
seconds, then hiding.

The objective marker is highlighting a guard tower. As you approach,

youll
52

want to pull out your sleep darts and hit the gunner on top of it with one
of
those. At the base of the building facing the tower to the south you will
find
a group of dancing girls (there is another group to the north east of the
tower
as well if you mess up the optional objective the first time!).

Hire the first group and walk with them to the west. There is a sheltered
storage area with a red marker indicating a powder keg. As you approach
the
shelter, have the dancing girls distract the guards here to complete the
second
optional objective. Now quickly grab the flashing keg, run over and drop
it
beneath the guard tower and shoot it to blow it up (dont worry
about being
detected once the second optional objective has been completed as
nothing will
happen).

=====================
Part 2: Infiltrate
=====================
Once the guard tower is alight, we want to quickly run to the end of the
dock
nearby and dive into the water. Swim to the far side of the ship (away
from
the shore) and use the stealth swim for as long as possible to stay out of
sight and to shake off alerted guards.

Climb up the rigging near the front of the ship and climb up to the first
platform on the mast. You will probably be spotted by a gunner in the
mast to
53

your left, but keep climbing until you reach the platform. Assassinate the
guard here and use your blow pipe to sleep the gunner on the other mast.
Now
simply climb to the green hologram at the very top of the mast you are
climbing
for a scene.

This will complete the mission.

have at
least 40 (or 50 if you did as I suggested earlier) freed slaves by now, so
its just a matter of grinding out the rest!

Fortunately, slave ships contain up to 100 slaves that we can free!

Unfortunately they are usually being escorted by groups of 2-3 frigates

and
brigs. As we need to liberate one of these bad boys to continue, follow
the
ship icon on the mini-map until you find it. As you approach, let loose
with
your mortars on the escorts and then finish them off with some
broadside/heavy

____________|

Once you have freed 150 total slaves (and liberated a slave ship), this
quest
marker will become active and is located back at the brothel we visited
earlier in the southeast part of the main city area of Port-au-Prince.

=====================
Part 1: Follow
=====================
From the start of the mission, follow your friend who is marked with the
blue
objective marker. Shell give you a rolling breakdown of what
youll need to
do for the rest of the mission. After a short walk a scene will play. Once
this
is done, follow the group of slaves in front of you in through the open
gate
and into the restricted area containing our target.

Place the crate near the green objective marker and then follow the other
NPC
56

marked with the blue indicator until you reach a stable area. Move over
to the
green hologram a scene will play.

=====================
Part 2: Infiltrate
=====================
When we regain control, it will be night time and there will be guards
patrolling about. At this point, we need to sneak into the mansion in the
centre of the grounds. We are also able to complete the first optional
objective at this point killing the overseer who marched you in here
previously.

From the start, look around the corner and wait for the guard here to
patrol
off. Enter the bushes when he is away and then whistle him over and
assassinate
him when he returns. Now turn on Eagle Vision and look along the wall
until
you see the gate.

The golden target here is our assassination target for the optional
objective.
Now we want to work our way along the wall using the foliage provided
and wait
in the bush beneath the tree closest to the gate. Wait for the pair of
guards
here to separate and then quickly sprint across the dirt road and perform
a
running assassination on the golden target. Continue into the bush in the
corner of the wall ahead.

Follow the perimeter wall to the south and climb the smaller wall
adjacent to
57

the shack here and hang from the ledge. Wait for the guard in front to
face
towards the mansion and climb over and hide in the bushes behind him
to take
him down. Continue to the north, using the bushes as cover until you
reach
another wall. This one will have guard leaning up against it.

Look at the mini-map and wait until the other guards are far enough
away and
then whistle the leaning guard over and dispatch him. Run across the dirt
road
and climb the wall of the mansion up to the balcony. Look in the
window to
spot our target.

=====================
Part 3: Eavesdrop
=====================
Once we see the target, the eavesdrop sequence will begin. Quickly hop
over
the railing to the left and follow the targets through the house, being sure
to stay between the windows to avoid detection whilst also staying
inside the
green circle. Once the targets move to the centre of the house out of
range,
our objectives will update.

Climb up to the top of the roof and make your way to the south side of
the
mansion. Dive into the hay stack marked with the green objective
marker.
Assassinate the guard standing nearby if necessary.
58

When you are clear, run over to the base of the mansion and enter the
stalking
zone beneath the deck with the targets on it. The eavesdropping
sequence will
start up once again. As they move, hug the wall at the base of the deck
and
follow them around the corner using the shrubs provided. Keep going
with them
until you reach the steps blocking your path in front. At this point, the
eavesdrop sequence will be complete.

=====================
Part 4: Escape
=====================
Now that the conversation is over, the game prompts us to return to the
brothel. Before we do that however, we can earn the second optional
objective
freeing the slaves from the barracks. To do this, we need to sneak back
over
to where we started the last part of the mission (working your way back
up the
perimeter wall works well!) and kill the three guards now hanging out
there.
Be sure to kill them quickly however as once they are aware of your
presence
they will start killing the slaves.

Once you have done that, climb up on top of the slave barracks building
on the
perimeter fence and climb through the hole in the iron spikes atop it to
escape the restricted area. Now make your way back to the brothel to
complete
the mission.

brothel. So when you are ready to continue, head back inside and speak
with
her to start the mission.

=====================
Part 1: Eavesdrop
=====================
Head over to the warehouse near the docks. The targets are inside. The
best
60

way to get at them stealthily though is climbing up through the gap in

the wall
on the south side of the building which you can do by approaching just
to the
left of the southern doorway and using the crate next to it as cover from
the
guards at the entrance to climb the wall. Eliminate the guy patrolling on
the
second floor of the warehouse.

Take cover behind the wooden wall directly above the targets and listen
to
their conversation. Once it is over, the screen will go black and our
objectives will update.

=====================
Part 2: Investigate
=====================
Following the conversation, five magnifying glass markers will appear
on the
map, these are investigations we need to complete to finish the mission.
We
need to complete at least three of them to progress, it should be noted
however
that we need to complete all five to earn the first optional objective and
we
cannot kill anyone during the investigations to earn the second optional
objective. Note that the not killing anybody objective appears to extend
to
knocking people out whilst unarmed and doing so will void the objective
for
you. So try not to!
61

Below are listed the five investigations and how to complete each. To
find out
which is which, go to the map and hover your cursor over the marker to
see
the labels for each.

1. Courier The courier is located on the deck of the ship at the

end
of the dock west of the warehouse. As you approach his
location, he will run or swim off. Follow him, tackle him
and loot him when he is on the ground to complete the
investigation.

2. Carrier The carrier is located around 100 metres to the east of

the
warehouse where the eavesdropping took place. As we
arrive
in the green investigation circle, the game will prompt you
to turn on Eagle Vision to spot the target. Hell be the
guard arm wrestling. Hell get up and walk away.
Simply
follow after him and pick pocket him when you get the
chance to finish the investigation.

3. Scientist This investigation starts at a green hologram objective

marker located just to the west of the slave auction in the
central city area of Port-au-Prince. This requires you to
eavesdrop a pair of scientists. Use the fences here to
begin with and then climb the building when you cannot use
the fences any further. Utilise the treetop path here to
continue following them onto the next set of rooves. Drop
down to the ground when you can no longer use the
rooftops
and use the citizens hanging around and shrubs to continue
following them until their conversation ends.
62

4. Fisherman The fisherman is located along the beach to the

south of
the warehouse where we eavesdropped on the conversation
earlier. He asks you to steal the key to a slave pen. Once
you have talked to him, an orange objective icon will
appear on the map to the northeast. Find the target and
pickpocket him when you are able. Unlock the nearby slave
pen (if you approach from behind, you can drop down and
open the door without the guards spotting you). Return to
the fisherman to complete the investigation.

5. Messenger Located leaning up against a building just to the

east to
the restricted area in the southern part of the
Port-au-Prince city area. As you get close, the game asks
you to target him with Eagle Vision, so do so. As you
approach he will run off, so chase him down and tackle him
to complete the investigation.

Once you have completed the target number of investigations, return to

the
brothel and speak with your contact inside to end the mission.

Note that the next mission will not unlock until we have attacked and
liberated the wellington plantation which is located out in the Caribbean.
As
such, fast travel to the Maroons Hideout and exit the cave here to
reach your
ship outside. Get behind the wheel and get sailing! Note that this is a
good
time to enter the captains cabin and upgrade the ship a little.

I would recommend upgrading to at least the following:

Level 2 hull
Level 2 cannons
Level 2 round shot
Level 2 heavy shot

Check out your map and set a course for the Wellington plantation which
should
be a brief journey to the southwest of your current location (at co-
ordinates
205,148). As you approach, you will notice a level 60 man-o-war ship
sitting
just outside of it. Yep, you are going to have to attack that and destroy it.
64

As you approach, let it cop a few of your mortars and then continue to
drop
shells on it as it heads in your direction. Once it is in range of your other
weapons, finish it off with some broadside/heavy shots. Destroying these
will
allow you to dock with the Wellington Plantation zone via the
highlighted
section of water nearby.

Now that we are at the plantation, go and liberate it. If you have freed a
plantation before, you just need to repeat the normal procedure
depending on
the time of day.

Day Time
_____________
We need to sneak around the grounds and taking out 20 of the guards,

out guards you want to stay undetected. If you are spotted, the guards
will start killing slaves and reducing the total number that you can
rescue. Eliminating the set number of guards undetected will earn
you 30
slaves and 10 maroons.

Night Time

If it is currently night time when you enter the plantation zone you
will
need to find and loot a key from a target guard (usually located near
the

key, we
then need to make our way over to three marked doors and unlock
them to
65

complete the side-mission. Doing so will earn you 30 slaves and 10

maroons.

Once you have cleared out the plantation, climb the windmill and
synchronise

Afterwards, set sail to explore, or head back to town and complete any
other
liberation tasks you feel like until you are good to go. Then make your

=====================
Part 1: Tailing
=====================
Following the introductory story sequence, youll notice a green
search area
on the map. The guy we need to locate is located just southwest and
across the
dirt street from the slave auction, close to the small outdoor storage
shelter.
Stick on your Eagle Vision to locate him.

Once you have located the target, he will start walking off. Quickly
highlight
him with your Eagle Vision once more and continue after him. As per
usual,
youll want to keep your distance and use the various pieces of cover
(people,
bushes and buildings) to stay out of sight when he stops and looks
around. You
will also need to steer clear of the wardens about and the restricted areas
if
possible.
67

When he walks past the slave auction stage, youll notice that there
are a few
guards about and he wanders through some restricted areas at this point.
To
avoid the restricted areas, you can climb up onto the grassy ledge above
the
auction stage and continue along the top of the wall here straight ahead
until
you exit back onto the streets (there should be a large staircase to the
left).
Our target will meet with a friend at the base of the stairs, so stay in
cover
until they begin moving again.

Target both of them and follow them into the restricted area to watch
them go
into the small undercover area just south of the large warehouse by the
docks.
After a few moments your objectives will be updated.

=====================
Part 2: Infiltrate
=====================
Well now see a green objective marker beneath the open storage
area that our
targets walked into. We need to get inside undetected and interact with
the
glowing sheet of paper. The easiest way to do this that I found was to
climb
onto the roof of the building across the street to the east of the shelter
and
perform a running jump from the roofs corner to land in the bushes at
the
northwest corner of the target area.
68

From here, you can stealth assassinate the guard nearby with his back to
the
shrub and whistle over any single patrollers that wander past your
posiion.
Keep your eye on the mini-map and when no guards are looking, enter
the
undercover area (if you get spotted here, quickly use some crates as
cover
before they see you long enough to warrant an investigation), approach
the
manifest and swap it.

Now just escape the area for a scene to complete this section of the
mission.

=====================
Part 3: Naval Battle
=====================
After the scene, well now need to protect a ship (marked with the
blue
objective marker) whilst it is attacked by a number of enemy vessels.
Note that
this is the section of the mission in which we can earn the two optional
objectives. As you are doing this however, a storm will pick up, so keep
on
the lookout for the occasional rogue wave during the next few minutes!

There are 7 enemy ships in total. As we approach, the ship will losing
health
and be taking fire from a six schooners and a brig. Our first optional
objective asks us to destroy all six schooners before sinking the brig. As
such
69

use your mortars from a distance as you work your way towards them to
take out
as many as possible before sailing in quick and using a combination of
broadside and chase cannons to take them out hastily.

Once you have taken down all of the schooners, turn your attention to
the brig.
If you have upgraded a little, this should not be too much of a challenge
for
you, as long as you can prevent the escort from taking too much damage.

After the brig has been dealt with the mission will be complete.

Before we start this mission, it is a good idea to restock your ships

ammo
supplies (especially mortars, if you use them as much as I do!).

To begin this mission, well once again head inside the brothel in
Port-au-Prince. This time, we want to step into the green mission start
hologram at the base of the stairs.

After the introductory cinematic youll be behind the wheel of the

Experto
Creed. If you look at the map, you will see that there is a green circle
indicating a slave ship named Bourbon. It is located at co-
ordinates
(171,349) just south of the marker for Cumberland Bay on the world
map.

=====================
Part 1: Naval Battle
=====================
As you approach the location, you will note that it is being escorted by 3
frigates. Use your spyglass to mark the slave ship (so you know what
not to
attack!) and then pepper the escorting frigates with mortars from a
distance
until they come to greet you. At this point, cut big laps and hit them with
your heavy/round shot attacks until you have sunk two of them.

When two of the three have been defeated a short scene will play and it
will
show the third starting to attack the slave ship. Quickly make your way
over
to its location, hitting it with mortars as you approach (to save time) and
then finish it off with a broadside or two.
71

The game will prompt you to go over and board the slave ship. So go
and do it!

=====================
Part 2: Rescue
=====================
Once you have boarded the ship, youll need to head over and
interact with the
hatch beneath the green hologram near the rear of the vessels deck.

Youll be in a cabin that is flooded and burning at the same time.

Huzzah! You
will see numerous slaves tied to beds throughout. We need to run up to
the
glowing pillars by each group of slaves and interact with it. At this point
you will have to follow the on-screen button prompts to release them.

Unfortunately we only have a limited amount of time here, so we need

to free
as many as possible within the timeframe. I counted seven groups of
slaves in
total, but you will only need to rescue five of the seven groups to
complete
the second optional objective.

After the time is up, a scene will play.

=====================
Part 3: Escape
=====================
Following the scene, you will find yourself underwater. Time to escape!
Swim
72

through the open doorway in front of you and interact with the glowing
hatch
on the floor. Descend through the hatch and turn to trace the green
objective
marker, swim to the right of the support in the centre, and swim along
whilst
hugging the right hand wall to avoid the moving cargo. When you reach
the end,
follow the passage around to the left and swim up the open hatch that is
marked
for you.

After a brief scene, Ade will surface for us. Climb up the wall to the left
and when you are able, back eject to the wall opposite. Continue to
climb all
the way to the top using the handholds and fairly obvious platforming
pathway
that is laid out for you.

As you arrive at the objective marker another scene will play to end the

To begin the ninth and final mission for the DLC, you will need to make
your
way to the Maroon Hideout either by going through the secret hatch on
the
ground next to the stairs in the brothel, or by fast traveling to the icon on
the world map. Once inside, run over and talk to our buddy who is
marked with
the exclamation mark to begin.

=====================
Part 1: Assassinate
=====================
Make your way over to the Governors mansion which is
conveniently indicated
by the green objective marker. As you approach it will become a wide,
green
investigation area. Stand outside of the open gate with the guards
blocking the
path at the south of the mansion. Stand in front of them and use Eagle
vision
to look into the grounds of the courtyard beyond. This should trigger a
scene
and identify the target for you.
74

Now pull out your blunderbuss and shoot the four guards at the gate.
This will
alert the target to your presence and he will run out the gate, past you
and
down towards the waterfront. Youre your blunderbuss out and shoot
a guard or
two that follow him to earn the first optional objective (but be sure not to
hit the target!). Now turn and follow him, doing your best to avoid the
guards
that attempt to tackle you from behind and block your path. As with any
chase
sequence, try to stay within 50 metres of him at all times or you are
likely
to desynchronise!

Now comes the tricky part. The target will run to a small guard training
area
along the south of the city area and it is unfortunately full of guards. Add
to that the fact that you just came running through the streets with half of
the guards in the city after you and you have a difficult fight ahead!
Now, you
also need to keep in mind that to earn the second optional objective, we
need
to kill the target with the branding iron this means we will need to
counter
and disarm the target before killing him. As such, make sure you are
unarmed
before you take him on.

Fortunately there are a few things we can do to make it easier. If you

pull
out the blunderbuss, you can circle around until you gather the enemies
into a
nice group and then let loose (just make sure the target does not get hit).
IF
75

you do this 2-3 times, this will thin them out nicely, allowing you to
easily
counter and kill the remaining guards.

Ensure at this point that you disarm and kill the target with the branding
iron and as he dies, a scene will play to complete the mission and the
DLC.

campaign missions, there are several types of additional side-missions to
keep
you occupied whilst taking a break from the main plot or during
exploration
once the credits have rolled. In the case of Freedom Cry, these are all
pooled
under the banner of liberation side-missions in which you find and assist
random slaves in and around port-au-prince and the Caribbean.

It should be noted that all liberation missions bar the Slave Ships and
77

plantations can be found within the confines of the City area of

Port-au-Prince (and even then, there are three plantations in the greater
Port-au-Prince area). Slave ships can be attempted after you acquire the
ship,
as can the three plantations located in the Caribbean sea.

In several locations throughout Port-au-Prince you will find slave

auctions.
These comprise a number of slaves tied up in a line, with an auctioneer
and a
78

number of guards located nearby. There are two ways to resolve these
slave
auction side-tasks.

1. Firstly we can approach the auctioneer and interact with him to

purchase
the slaves for 500 Reales.

2. Alternatively, we can kill the auctioneer and all the nearby guards,
and then interacting with the slaves to free them.

Here are some of the mission locations:

1. In the northeast corner of the city area of Port-au-Prince, just west

of
the Governer's mansion.

2. Just north of and directly across the road from the building with the
viewpoint in the city area of Port-au-prince.

As you walk around the main city area of Port-au-Prince, you will every
so
often get a prompt to fto save a freeing slave from a pursuer. Do do this,
we
need to simply find the slave on the mini-map and then identify and kill
his
the guard that is chasing after him. As long as you kill the guard before
he
catches up with the slave, you will complete the task.

Here are some of the mission locations:

1. Just northwest of the brothel where you recieve the majority of your
missions. This is marked by a Maroon Store icon on the map, close
to the
Est-bourbon plantation.

2. Close to the southern boundry of the map, almost directly south of

the

3. In the very northeast corner of the city area, close to the path

In Port-au-Prince there are a number of locations where you will find

injured
slaves sitting on the ground. To complete the liberation task associated
with
these guys, we need to pick them up and carry them to an objective
marker that

way.
As you arrive, you will complete the task.

Here are some of the mission locations:

There are a number of cages scattered around Port-au-Prince which are

Obtain
the key from him and use it on the cage to complete the task.

Note that most of these cages have a restricted area around them, so you

Plantations are one of the biggest additions to the game in Freedom Cry
and
they act as ad-lib infiltration missions that you can attempt at any time,
providing the target plantation is not abandoned.

Now depending on whether it is daytime or night time, you will have a

different
objective.

Day Time
_____________
We need to sneak around the grounds and taking out 20 of the guards,
if
this is your first attempt at a plantation, keep in mind that as you take
out guards you want to stay undetected. If you are spotted, the guards
will start killing slaves and reducing the total number that you can
83

Doing so will earn you 30 slaves and 10
maroons.

Here are some of the mission locations:

There are six plantations in the DLC. Three are located in the Port-au-
Prince
area and there are a further 3 around the caribbean that you will need to
sail
to.

1. (418,246) Brousse du Nord-Est (North Eastern Port-au-Prince)

Slave ships contain up to 100 slaves that we can free! Unfortunately

though
they are usually being escorted by groups of 2-3 frigates and brigs. As
we need

on the
escorts and then finish them off with some broadside/heavy shots.
Destroying
these will allow you to board the slave ship. As per usual, kill the set
number
of crew to free the slaves on board.

Unfortunately there are no set locations for the slave ships, however
when you

Then its a simple matter of sailing over and taking its convoy down.

There is a plethora of Collectibles littered throughout the DLC's game

world
93

in Port-au-Prince itself as well as secondary locations such as

shipwrecks,
plantations and on one or two of the little islands scattered about the
Caribbean zone.

The collectibles come in a couple of flavours. This collectible locations

guide
will give you a brief description of each type of collectible, a brief intro
on
how and what they are used for and then a complete list of all of the
different
collectibles in the game sorted by the locations available. I have
included a
brief description for the location of each collectible to assist you in
finding
them.

Note that climbing and synchronising viewpoints will reveal all of the
various
collectibles on the mini-map, so you should definitely consider doing so
prior
to starting your hunt!

The different collectibles include:

> 63 Treasure Chests

_____________________
There are an abundance of treasure chests scattered across the
Caribbean.
They appear as your stock, standard chest and can be opened by
approaching
them and using the interact button when the prompt appears to do so.
These
often contain various sums of Reales and reagents. They are not only
found
94

all over Port-au-Prince but also in the abandoned ruins, shipwreck

dive
sites and on uncharted islands in the middle of the ocean as well.

Fortunately, collecting all of these is not required to complete the

DLC
at 100% synchronisation.

> 5 Secrets
_____________________
There are a good number of secrets hidden around the caribbean
island
locations that you can visit in the free-roaming naval area. Unlike the
secrets in the main game, these secrets are incredibly useful and
provide
players with new weapons and upgrades to make Adewale even more
of a force
to be reckoned with.

Fortunately, collecting all of these is not required to complete the

DLC
at 100% synchronisation.

| His Word Was Perhaps | Description: |

| | Freedom Cry - Completed all missions. |
| | |
| |----------------------------------------------|
| | How to unlock: |
| | ============== |
| | Complete all nine DLC memory sequences and |
| | you will unlock this achievement/trophy. |

|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
| His Own Medicine | Description: |
| | ============ |
| | Complete the second optional mission |
| | objective in the final memory. |
| | |
| |----------------------------------------------|
| | How to unlock: |
| | ============== |
| | To do this, we need to simply kill the target|
| | with the branding iron that he is holding |
| | during most of the mission. To do so, get him|
| | into a combat situation whilst being unarmed,|
| | counter and disarm him to acquire the brand |
| | and then just attack him until you can finish|
| | him off. Doing so will unlock this one. |
| | |

|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
| His Full Attention | Description: |
| | ============ |
| | Freedom Cry - Achieve 100% synchronization. |
| | |
| |----------------------------------------------|
| | How to unlock: |
| | ============== |
| | Fortunately achieving 100% sync in Freedom |
| | Cry is much easier than the full game as all |
| | you need to do is complete all of the |
| | optional mission objectives on each mission |
| | to earn it. To do so, simply follow the |
| | walkthroughs above! |
| | |
|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
116

|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
| Liberation Day | Description: |
| | ============ |
| | Free your first slave. |
| | |
| |----------------------------------------------|
| | How to unlock: |
| | ============== |
| | Liberating slaves will take up a fair bit of |
| | time, to begin with though, you will have to |
| | save a fleeing slave at the start of the |
| | second memory from a pursuer. Doing so will |
| | unlock the achievement/trophy. |
| | |
|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
| Seeds of Independence | Description: |
| | ============ |
| | Liberate 500 slaves. |
| | |
| |----------------------------------------------|
| | How to unlock: |
| | ============== |
| | To liberate slaves we can do a number of side|
| | missions around Port-Au-Prince and the other,|
| | smaller caribbean locations. These include: |
| | |
| | > Attacking a plantation and killing all of |
| | its guards. |
| | > Save a fleeing slave from pursuers. |
| | > Free slaves from cages by looting the key |
| | from a guard. |
| | > Free slaves from a slave auction by either|
| | buying them for 500 Reales or by killing |
| | all of the guards. |
117

| | > Free slaves being escorted through the |

| | streets. |
| | > Free slaves from punishment. |
| | > Carry injured slaves to a safe location. |
| | > Board a slave ship. |
| | |
| | Once you have undertaken enough of these to |
| | accumulate 500 slaves in total, you will |
| | unlock this achievement/trophy. |
| | |
|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------+----------------------------------------------|
| Firepower | Description: |
| | ============ |
| | Kill 5 guards at once with a blunderbuss. |
| | |
| |----------------------------------------------|
| | How to unlock: |
| | ============== |
| | To do as the description says, you will need |
| | to rope in a good number of guards by |
| | triggering an alert. Then pull out the |
| | blunderbus and circle around them to get them|
| | to stack up and group together, then fire |
| | away! A great place to do this is during the |
| | fight in the assassination mission in the |
| | final memory as you will have 10-15 guards |
| | wanting to take you at once. There is a good |
| | spread ont he weapon so as long as you can |
| | see more thn 5 guards when you unleash, it |
| | should have the desired effect! |

Donations
122

===================================================
============================

After a few generous emails and suggestions from readers and because
donations
seems to be a growing trend among other contemporary guide writers, I
have
decided to put in the option to allow you to donate some money to me
for
helping you out if you wish to do so.

By no means feel obligated to donate just for viewing my guide, but if

you are
123

feeling a little generous I certainly wont object! Any amount is

appreciated
whether it be 10 cents or $10.

Thankyou far all that read this far, if you are interested in donating, my
Paypal address is listed below, if not, why not send me an email or join
my
Facebook page and give me a shout out!
