ReductionofOrder
Werenowgoingtotakeabriefdetourandlookatsolutionstononconstantcoefficient,secondorderdifferential
equationsoftheform.


Ingeneral,findingsolutionstothesekindsofdifferentialequationscanbemuchmoredifficultthanfindingsolutions
toconstantcoefficientdifferentialequations.However,ifwealreadyknowonesolutiontothedifferentialequation
wecanusethemethodthatweusedinthelastsectiontofindasecondsolution.Thismethodiscalledreductionof
order.

Letstakeaquicklookatanexampletoseehowthisisdone.

Reductionoforderrequiresthatasolutionalreadybeknown.Withoutthisknown
solutionwewontbeabletodoreductionoforder.

Oncewehavethisfirstsolutionwewillthenassumethatasecondsolutionwillhavethe
