(a) The density plot below shows the distribution of a variable split between males and
females. Compare the distributions in terms of location, variability and shape.

(b) In a study, data was collected in a total of four variables V 1, V 2, V 3, V 4. Based on the
box plots below compare the distribution of the pair of variables V 1 with V 2 and V 3
with V 4 in terms of location, variability and shape. [4 marks]

Test tubes produced by a certain company will be defective with probability 0.1 indepen-
dently of each other. Answer the following questions.

(a) A box of 20 test tubes was ordered by a laboratory. What is the probability that at least
4 of them are defective? [3 marks]

(b) What is the probability that in a box of 8 test tubes all of them are working? [3 marks]

(c) If we have a box with 20 test tubes and another box with 8 test tubes, what is the ex-
pected value of the total number of defective test tubes? [3 marks]

Question 3 [11 marks]
Weights of female koalas in a koala sanctuary in Queensland follow a Normal distribution
with mean 5.1 kg and standard deviation 0.6 kg.

(a) If we select a female koala at random, what is the probability that her weight is at least
6 kg? [3 Marks]

(b) The weight of a female koala, named Mofli, living in the sanctuary is less than 23% of
the other female koalas in this sanctuary. What is the weight of Mofli? [4 Marks]

(c) Six female koalas are chosen at random from the sanctuary. What is the standard de-
viation of the total weight of these six koalas? [4 Marks]

Question 4 [9 marks]
A study is conducted to better understand the effect of sleep and caffeine on memory. The
research team believes that people remember things better after sleep. A sample of 24 adults
were randomly divided into two groups of 12 and given a list of 20 words to memorise. After
this, one group takes a nap while the other group is given a caffeine pill. The response vari-
able of interest is the average number of words a person can recall.

Group n x
Sleep 12 15.25
Caffeine 12 12.25

(a) Write the null and alternative hypotheses for this experiment. [2 marks]

(b) Define the appropriate summary statistic to test the hypothesis and calculate its value.
[2 Marks]

(c) We looked at all the possible allocations of the observations to two groups of 12 and
found out that there were 38 allocations which exceed the value you obtained in (b).
What is the p-value for the corresponding randomization test? What do you conclude?
[5 marks]

Question 5 [5 marks]
A hiking group is planing their next weekend excursion. They could go either on Saturday or
on Sunday. According to the weather forecast, the probability that it will rain on Saturday is
0.2. The probability that it will rain on Sunday given that it rained on Saturday is 0.6 while
the probability that it will rain on Sunday given that it did not rain on Saturday is 0.1.

What is the probability that it will not rain during the weekend?
