ASSIGNMENTS 1-9

Dear Students,
You will have to do nine assignments in all. All the assignments are tutor marked. Each Tutor Marked
Assignment carries 100 marks. Out of the nine assignments, three are Tutor Marked Practical Assignments
(TPA) and six are Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA). The Block-wise distribution of assignments for
each course (1,2 and 3) is as follows:
INSTRUCTIONS
Before attempting the assignments please read the following instructions carefully.
1) Read the detailed instructions about assignments given in the Programme Guide.
2) Write your roll number, name, full address and date on the top right corner of the
first page of your response sheet(s).
3) Write the course title, assignment number and name of the study centre you are
attached to in the centre of the first page of your response sheet(s).
The top of the first page of your response sheet should look like this:

4) Use only foolscap size paper for your responses and tie all the pages carefully.
5) Write the question number with each answer.
6) You should write in your own handwriting.
7) Submission: The completed Assignment should be sent to the Coordinator of the Study Centre
allotted to you.
A Note of Caution
It has been noticed that some students are sending answers to Check Your Progress Exercises to the
University for evaluation. Please do not send them to us. These exercises are given to help in judging your
own progress. For this purpose, we have provided the answers to these exercises at the end of each Unit.
We have already mentioned this in the Programme Guide.
Before dispatching your answer script, please make sure you have taken care of the following points:
• Your roll number, name and address have been written correctly.
• The title of the course and assignment number have been written clearly.
• Each assignment on each course has been written on separate sheets and pinned properly.
• All the questions in the assignments have been answered.
In this section, you have to answer ten short questions (of 4 marks each). Answer each question in about
100 to 150 words.
This section consists of questions where you have to apply knowledge you have gained in real-life
situations.
In these questions you have to think and explain certain applications of theoretical principles and concepts.
Assignments 3,6 and 9 are based on Practical Manuals 1,2,3 respectively. Assignment 3 carries specific
questions based on your study of Practical Manual 1. Assignments 6 and 9 are based on Practical Manuals
2 and 3 respectively. You would be required to submit your responses to activities given in Practical
Manuals 2 and 3 respectively for Assignments 6 and 9. You have been asked to complete five activities
from each of these manuals. You have to submit responses to any four in each case.
1) Planning: Read the assignments carefully. Go through the units on which they are based. Make
some points regarding each question and then rearrange these in a logical order.
2) Organization: Be a little more selective and analytical. Give attention to your introduction and
conclusion. The introduction must offer your brief interpretation of the question and how you
propose to develop it. The conclusion must summarize your response to the question.
There are 10 short questions in this part. Your answer should not exceed 100-150 words. Answer all
questions. Each question carries 4 marks.
4. List the Vitamins of the B Complex group giving one major function of each.
7. What specific pattern should be kept in mind in planning diets for adolescent girls?
1. Cut out any five advertisements for food products from a newspaper. Stick the newspaper
cuttings on your assignment sheet and comment on each of them. Do you agree with the
claims made in each advertisement based on nutritional considerations?

2. Interview your grandparents regarding their views on the changes in meal patterns over the past
decade. Identify any five trends they have noticed. Does this agree with your parent’s views?

There are 10 short questions in this part. Your answer should not exceed 100-150 words. Answer all
questions. Each question carries 4 marks.
1. What are the different forms of sugar and other sweetening agents available in the Indian market?
2. What is the role of food laws and food standards in protecting consumers?
1. Conduct a market survey of ten cereal products available in your area. Comment on their
packaging and mention price per kg. (20)
2. Read the labels of any ten processed food products available in the market. List their ingredients
and identify any food standard that they conform to (e.g. ISI, Agmark, FPO) in the case of each
food product. (20)

There are ten short questions in this part. Your answer should not exceed 100-150 words each. Answer all
questions. Each question carries 4 marks.
7. What are the three types of addiction? Give one line on each type.
10. How would you define health education? What are its integral components?
1. List any ten important health messages related to prevention of infection. Which target groups
would you address with each of these messages? (20 marks)
2. What are the important points you will consider in deciding on messages on AIDS prevention for
adolescents? (10 marks)
3. Collect samples of drinking water from your locality in clean glasses. Compare the colour, smell,
extent of suspended matter/floating particles. Give your comments in the form of a table.

adopt to prevent occurrence of food borne disease.
3. Name the causative organism for the following disease/ infection. What are the common signs/
symptoms of each of the conditions.

7. What do you understand by food poisoning? Explain the term giving suitable example?
8. Discuss the common measures you would adapt to prevent/ control food intoxications.

Assignment 8 (TMA-8)
There are 10 short questions in this part. Your answer should not exceed 100-150 words. Answer all
questions. Each question carries 4 marks.
1. Several approaches are available for nutrition and health education communication. Explain these
approaches briefly.
2. Participatory approaches may be required to prepare the ground before an instructional approach is
applied. Do you agree with the statement. Give justifications.
3. List handy guidelines you would adopt for developing games in nutrition and health education.
5. Elaborate on the various community strategies you can use to impart nutrition and health
education.
6. Which types of messages would be best communicated through child-to-child programme. Give
your opinion.
9. Give four examples of how modern approaches can be used in spreading awareness about health,
hygiene in the community.
10. List the feeding programmes run by the government to combat malnutrition. How can these
programes be used to impart nutrition education? Explain briefly.
Section B: Application Questions (40 Marks)
1. Design and develop an educational game to impart message related to eating balanced diet among
school children.
Guidelines:
- Prepare a sample of the game on paper.
- Write the procedure for playing the game and submit. (20 marks)
2. Suggest two ways in which women-to-women strategy could be used to spread messages related
to prevention of anaemia among pregnant women. Write the procedure briefly.

Guidelines
i) 80 marks are allotted for the answers to the questions mentioned in the activities. Note down all
relevant points. Use lists, diagrams, flow charts to give a clearer idea of what you are trying to put
across.
ii) 20 marks have been allotted for your comments on the problems/ success/ interesting points noted
during your work in a community. Make notes on all four activities submitted. Also indicate
whether you undertook other activities in addition to those asked. If so, give details.
