The staff enjoys presenting a Hicksville

High School Newsletter and weve been doing that for 17 years. When we
first started producing, there was not much consideration given to the
staff and our vulnerability. However, 17 years later our productive days
are sometimes questionable because of the inevitable. We have what I
consider an ancient staff who would love to see some young blood enter
the picture. It is a commitment and unfortunately not many are prepared
to make the jump from couch potato to the computer. We are at a great
time when looking at the product available to help in production that
allows some flexibility. I remember working with floppy discs when I was
producing newsletters for the USS Liberty Veterans Association. It
seemed to take forever to complete even the smallest of projects. Its
faster now and we need help in sustaining production so we can publish
for many more years. If interested, please send a note to

I just watched your film Hicksville Then and Now and found it quite interesting and
moving. I moved here in 1981 but My Aunt & Uncle moved here in 1949 to Spindle

once where Holy Trinity High School is. He is almost 91. Thanks for sharing such a nice

Dear Buffalo Bob et alI'm just catching up on the interesting feature about memorable
travels experienced by former HHS students. Although I've been to Hawaii, Alaska, New
Zealand, Australia, Israel and the West Bank, England, Scotland, Canada, Mexico, and
Bermuda, my most memorable trip was to Haiti in January 2011, exactly a year after the
earthquake. There I joined thousands of Americans, Europeans, and people from far away
as South Africa and Korea who came to assist in the rebuilding. The devastation caused
by the disaster a year earlier was still painfully evident--collapsed buildings, piles of
rubble in the streets of Port-au-Prince, and thousands of refugees living in tent cities on
the bare hillsides. To make the setting even more threatening, I was there in the midst of
the cholera epidemic that followed the earthquake. The nine days I spent in that wrecked
country have left indelible images in my brain. It was hardly a vacation, but I'm proud of
having done my small partBill Palmer 1964
Editor notecudos to you Bill and all those volunteers from around the

Interesting to read the newsletter to see where some of us have been.

Two years ago my wife, Lori, and I joined two friends for a 93 day RV trip through New
Mexico, Colorado, Calgary, Yukon, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and
California before returning to Texas. It was the trip of a lifetime with the last
highlight being a hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque. And last summer we managed to
get to North Dakota, the final state we had to visit - it took us 50 years to set foot

Friday, May 12th, was Paul Pattersons birthday and he brought me flowers for
Mother's day! So I said we have to go out for your birthday, just the two of us.
We went to George Martin's Strip Steak Restaurant.
Food was fancy & delicious, we had a great waitress & met two young men who treated
us to birthday desserts. Lots of laughs and a really great night. I'm so blessed to have "my

Thanks so much for remembering us on our 59th anniversary. You asked us to share a
memorable anniversary, and the most recent one that I consider memorable is our 50th.
We had a wonderful get-together with friends and family at our church, and we renewed
our original vows with our son, Rev. Rob Ohliger, presiding. It was a very special day,
and we got to dance to "our song," Nat King Cole's "They Tried to Tell us We're Too
Young." However, there is one other anniversary that I am remembering - our 1st.
Tom was in the military and we were living in Germany. It was also Mother's Day
and I was 8-1/2 months pregnant with our first child. I owned 3 maternity outfits, only
one of which was considered "dressy." I asked Tom please don't forget to get
that dress from the dry cleaners so I could wear it on Sunday. He forgot, and I ended up
wearing an old shirt and faded black skirt to the Heidelberg Castle and restaurant for
our special outing. I was so angry and hardly spoke to him that day. In spite of all that,
here we are now, wed 59 years with 5 wonderful kids; 12 grandchildren and 3
great-grandchildren with another on the way. God has been good, and our challenge now
is dealing with my beloved Tom's dementia. I'm up for the challenge, with God's help. I
look forward to receiving the newsletter each month and want to thank you guys for all
the labor you put into it. Keep up the good workTom and Carole Kiever Ohliger

HenryIn the lore and nostalgia, Ive heard about Billy Joel and his time in Hicksville
High. What Ive heard is that, in fact, Joel did not graduate with his class. The story Ive
heard is that because of cutting his gym class, he did not have the sufficient number of
physical education credits to earn a high school diploma and that he simply left school
instead of trying to earn his diploma. Obviously it never hurt his musical career. The
other story Ive heard is that for what would have been his 1967 class 25th anniversary in
1992, he showed up for an event at the school and visited the Administration Office and
the credit he lost from cutting gym was waived and a new credit was given for artistic
achievement so Billy could then be awarded his high school diploma. That would make
Billy Joel a member of the class of 1992. At least thats what Ive heardRegards

PeterI am aware that Joel did not graduate HHS together with his classmates. I was
not aware, however, that he might have been awarded his diploma after he became
famous for his music career. But it seems plausible to me that the HHS administrators
would have done so to bolster their own standings among their peersBestHenry

I heard the story about the 25th anniversary reunion from a cousin of mine that was in the
same year as Billy Joel and knew him slightly through the local music scene. My cousin,
Dan Grumo was in a band that played in a couple battle of the bands that Billy Joels
band also participated in when he was just a kid from Hicksville. Cousin Danny said
Billy was the only one in his band that had any genuine talent. He was the source of the
story about the diploma being awarded at the re-union.
Unfortunately, I cannot ask my cousin Danny to verify the story as he passed away in
2003. I agree wholeheartedly with you that the high school and administration would
have awarded Billy Joel his diploma for the publicity valueRegardsPeter

Thanx for that info, Peter. I am sure Buffalo Bob will include it in the next issue of the

Ok my grammar Nazi friends...here is an honest

question. When quoting does the punctuation at the end of the quote go inside or outside
the quotation marks.....I really need to know this or my weekend will be a
disaster!...Walter Relling 1977

InsideJames Madison
Inside!...Virginia Cabbe Reinhardt

"Inside!" Unless the quote is a part of the sentence and

contained within another sentence. Part of what she said is, "my red shoes"Roger

Funny but I've worked with a lot of Europeans and they would always point out I was
doing it wrong. LOL so in US insidein Europe outsideSelena Hildebrandt

What I want to know is why it would turn your weekend into a

Besides the major battle today is it one or two spaces after a sentenceJames
Madison

When quoting goes outside like "frankly my dear I don't give a

damn"Naomi Groont Doudera 1973
Inside the quotation markGina Garone-DeBello

Inside, unless the punctuation mark is a colonJanyl Smith

I learned to read by setting type - upside-down and backward. I was trained to always put
any form of "ending" punctuation (period, queston mark or exclaimation point) inside
"quotes" (quotation marks), brackets or "toenails" (parentheses.) If I made a composition
error with pencil and paper, well, that's why God created the eraser. If I made a
composition error with type, it had to be reset and hopefully was caught in the proof
phase, not the press run!
Jay Weber 1970 (shown above at family BBQ in July of 1958)

As a High School teacher explained it to

me, "Putting the period, exclamation mark or question mark after the end quote would be
like planting a tree on the other side of the fence. " Quotation mark goes after the
punctuationDeb Cappola Schaller (shown above with her beautiful
daughter)

Ok lil buddy. Quotation Marks go outside the phrase or sentence. Punctuation is

considered part of the complete phrase or sentence.... Mrs Eikelberger, 3rd grade, Will
Rogers Elementary!...

Andre Guevara (shown above in white shirt and black shorts)

e.g. "This is how it's done." Parenthesis outside the sentence and the period.

Deborah Elkis-Abuhoff (Debbie is wearing an orange striped pullover)

Ok the "insides" are definitely the majority. It makes senseWalter

From the Associated Press Style Book:

Periods and commas always go within quotation marks. Dashes, semicolons, question
marks and exclamation points go within quotation marks when they apply to the quoted
matter only. They go outside quotation marks when they apply to the whole sentence
Jim Johnson
Perfect....and I think the last part was the essence of my confusionWalter

Question Marks or Exclamation Points in Quotations

If a question or exclamation is quoted directly, the quotation contains the question mark
or exclamation point.
If the question or exclamation is at the end of the quotation, the question mark or
exclamation point comes before the closing quotation mark.
Incorrect: "Look at that"! he exclaimed. "Did you see that"?
Correct: "Look at that!" he exclaimed. "Did you see that?"
(Question mark or exclamation point comes before quotation mark.)
A question mark can be found outside the quotation mark if the sentence is asking about a
quotation, but the quotation itself is not a question.
Incorrect: Did Mark Antony say, "Friends, Romans, countrymen?"
(A question is not being quoted. The speaker is asking about a quotation.)
Correct: Did Mark Antony say, "Friends, Romans, countrymen"?
In the rare case where the question is about a quotation ending in a question, the sentence
ends with a single question mark before the quotation mark.
Incorrect: Who said, "Et tu, Brut?"?
(Second question mark redundant)
Correct: Who said, "Et tu, Brut?"Buffalo Bob Casale

Who invented the back-up sensor that is now a standard feature on all new cars?
I bet you think it was Ford, maybe GM, how about Chrysler? No,
then, how about Mercedes Benz?
The back-up sensor warns the driver before the rear bumper
actually comes in contact with something.
Surprisingly, it was not developed by modern automotive
engineers using the latest technology. Recently, it was disclosed
that the first to develop the back-up sensor was in fact a simple
Chinese farmer.
His invention was simple and effective. It emits a high-pitch
squeal when the back of the vehicle approaches a solid object,
getting louder the closer it becomes. Here's his first
prototype . . .click on link below

A cool reminder that Summer is just around the corner

Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen are suffering from a famine that affects 20
million people. Over 40 percent of people living in sub-Saharan Africa live in extreme
poverty. In the last three decades, absolute poverty has been reduced from 40 percent to
20 percent worldwide.
The ingenious structure shown above facilitates the training of subsistence farmers in
modern farming techniques. Providing the farmers with inexpensive fertilizers and state-
of-the-art tools enables them to increase their crop yields dramatically. The skyscraper
also creates a local trading area, which helps to maximize profits. The objectives are self-
sufficient farming and overcoming poverty and famine.
The top of the proposed skyscraper is comprised of layered fields. Theres a drone
docking center in the middle so agricultural products can be flown to isolated locations.
The first floor consists of a kindergarten, a doctors office, and an information center.
The designers of the Mashambas Skyscraper predict that the combination of training,
fertilizer, and seeds will enable small farmers to harvest as many crops per acre as large
farms do. This will end famine, as the village will have food for itself and enough to sell
to nearby villages. Another amazing feature of the structure is that it can be moved. The
base remains in place and the other floors can be relocated to educate other farmers.

PRESS RELEASE - The Wolves At My Shadow
Ingelore Rothschild was twelve years old when she was whisked out of her Berlin home
in 1936. It was her first step on a cross-continent journey to Japan where she and her
parents sought refuge from rising anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany.
A decade later, as she sails away from what has become her home in Kobe, Japan,
Ingelore records her memories of life in Berlin, the long train journey through Russia,
and her time in Japan during World War II. Each leg of her journey presents its own
nightmare: passports are stolen, identities are uncovered, a mudslide tears through the
Rothschild's home, and the atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Ingelore's bright observant nature and her remarkable capacity for befriending those
along her way fill her narrative with unique details about the people she meets and the
places she travels to.
The story of Ingelore and her prominent German Jewish family's escape is an invaluable
account that contributes to Holocaust witness and memoir literature.
Although she was forever marked by her traumatic past, Ingelore's survival story is a
painful reminder that only European Jews with significant financial means were able to
carefully orchestrate a successful escape from Nazi Germany.

AliceWhat a nice surprise to hear from you. Can you believe I'm living in Minnesota
after my husband retired from the Navy following 22yrs of uninterrupted service. He was
a carrier pilot for 5 yrs then became a Supply officer. We have 5 living children.
Hopefully we can keep in touch & catch on the many years since High SchoolBarb

Hi BarbLong time no see, or hear and its all my fault. Believe it or not, when I think
of the years I spent at Hicksville schools (1948 -1953), I often think of you. We kids
from Plainview were bussed back and forth to Hicksville. This meant we arrived at
school around 8 am and were picked up around 3.35 pm. No problem as such except that
it meant it was difficult to participate in extracurricular activities and during school hours
we were confined to the
grounds.
Anyway, one day we were at school for several class hours, then told we could go home.
Great but strange because normally, if a teacher became ill or whatever, a substitute
teacher filled in. In this case, I would have had to hang around school for four or so
hours until the school bus came. You came to the rescue. You invited me to go home
with you and you prepared lunch for us. If I close my eyes, I can see you frying eggs
very professionally. Thank you Barb or Bobbie as I used to call youAlice

Hi HenryThank you so much for making the connection with Barbara and not giving
up!! I have been living in Germany since 1970 and feel quite at home here because the
area in which I live in Schleswig Holstein reminds me of my childhood days when living
on the edge of the

Hempstead Plains. I was born in Hicksville, lived on the line between Hicksville and East
Meadow from 1940 until l944, then in Plainview until 1953.
I was devastated when my family moved to East Hampton in 1953 and then to Waterloo
in "Upstate NY " in 1959 just before I left for Hamburg Germany on a fellowship. For
me, the Hicksville area is "Heimat", a German word that denotes the relationship of a
human being toward a certain spatial social unit. It is often expressed with such terms as
home or homeland, but it has been alleged that the word has no English equivalent.
Hicksville does equate to Heimat!!!
My Great Great (GG) Grandparents, the Steers, settled in Plainedge in the 1840s; GG
Grandparents, the Rowehl, in East Meadow in the 1850s and GG Grandparents, the
Wetterau in Hicksville in 1867.
My Grandpa Wetterau had Miss Farley as a teacher when he attended Nicholai Street
School. Both my parents attended Hicksville High for awhile. My father and his sister
were driven to Hicksville by taxi for a year or two from North Massapequa before being
sent on to Hempstead. My Dad had a Mr. Horne as a biology teacher and received an
achievement medal from him. Mr Horne was my science teacher in the 7th grade. I could
go on and on. But I will spare you that. Thanks again HenryAlice Cobb Hirsch

I recently discovered Hicksville Patch in the internetNotices concerning the vote on the
Hicksville School Budget 2017-18 and it immediately caught my attention. Nearly 135
million dollars!!!! Several weeks ago my younger brother found copies of documents
that our Grandfather Wetterau had made before presenting them to Mr. Evans for
inclusion in the Gregory Museum. According to these notes, his own grandfather, George
William Wetterau, had come to Hicksville in 1867, established a bakery on the corner of
Broadway and Cherry Street and helped establish the first school in Hicksville. In 1885-
1886, Daniel Wetterau, son of George William, was school tax collector. The school
budget for that year was $ 913.70 and the tax rate was 70 cents per $100 of assessed
value.

On this day 47 years ago, May 5th, 1970, I returned from Vietnam. We
landed and arrived at Fort Lewis, Washington under protest, unaware of what had
happened at Kent State University. The welcome home was not what we were expecting,
to say the least. My arrival at Kennedy Airport was no better. After all the years that have
gone, by this day will always be a sad memoryDan Rysanek 1967

Thank you for your service ( I know its not enough, but its the least I can say). It was a
terrible time for those of you coming home. I remember someone on my block was
coming home and my father (a WWII Vet) thought it would be a nice gesture for
everyone to hang out a flag to welcome him home. Very few homeowners actually went
along with the suggestion. It was so sadLynne Lombardi 1971

Wow, thanks for

sharing, and bringing to light your personal experience. It may have taken a long time but
we all know now the incredible sacrifice every Vietnam veteran made. Thank you
Steve Declemente

My dad told me then we should thank and honor our soldiers no

matter what our political opinions are. Thank-you and welcome home.

I was also flown to Fort Lewis, from VietnamSonny Maxon
