SUMMARY

The Correlation Between Type A and B Personality with Dyspepsia


Occurrence in Sumbersari Village, Sumbersari County, Jember Regency;

Dyspepsia is a group of symptoms characterized by sense of fullness, fast


satisfied, bloating, burp, anorexia, nausea, vomitting, heartburn, and regurgitation.
Based on definition, it can be concluded that dyspepsia is the uncomfortale or
painful feeling on abdomen accompanied by several following complaints.

According to data obtained from Medic Division of Sumbersari Public Health


Center, dyspepsia occurrence on this area was somewhat high. In 2014, there were
591 dyspepsia cases, 214 of cases took place within Sumbersari Village resident.
From January to July 2015, there were 314 dyspepsia cases recorded by
Sumbersari Public Health Center, of which 92 cases were from Sumbersari
Village resident.

One factors causing dyspepsia is stress. As there is an emotional stimulation


leading to stressful condition, human body will automatically respond by
stimulating hormone to suppress stressor (the source of stress). This system will
activate cortisol secreted by adrenal gland. Cortisol will result in the increase of
heart rate, sweat secretion and gastric acid. As a result, there will be an
uncomfortable feeling of epigastrium. The cortisol existence is influenced by
coping system owned by every individual. One element of coping system is
personality type.

This research aimed to analyzing the correlation between personality type A and B
with dyspepsia occurrence in Sumbersari Subdistrict, Sumbersari District, Jember
Regency. It was an observational analytical research by using cross sectional
design. Sample of research consisted of 96 persons living in Sumbersari Village.
Data collection used interview technique. Data taken from interview were
analyzed using bivariat analysis with Chi-square test and significance level 5%
(=0,05).

Based on the analysis of research result, it was known that p-value was 0,000 <
0.05 with OR (Odds Ratio) of 340 and 95% CI (Confidence Interval) was 54,190 -
2133,252. These scores confirmed that personality type A and B had significant
correlation with the occurrence of dyspepsia. Respondents with personality type A
had risk to suffer from dyspepsia 340 times higher than respondents with
personality type B.
