Conventions
= Play the note while pressing with one finger on the same string
(as the note) in the middle between the agraffe and the damper. The sound
effect is different according to the register used. It should be a pitched
sound.

= Same as above, but this time press with 2 fingers instead of one.
It should still be a pitched sound but with a more percussive color.

= Press the finger where the string begins right after the agraffe.
In the lower register one should press where the bronze part of the string
starts. The sound effect should be similar to an E-Bass guitar in the lower
register and similar to a cymbalo in the medium register.

= Press the finger on the string in the front of the damper

(between the damper and the agraffe).

= Slide the finger on the string from the 1st position to the 2nd one.

= Play the note on the keyboard and dampen the string with the
finger. The rhythm indicates the time relation between the 2 actions.

= Press the finger on the string in front of the damper in a such

way that the 10th harmonic (a M3 three octaves higher) can be heard. The
exact position of this harmonic differs from piano to piano ( it is always
between the damper and the agraffe, usually ~1-2 cm from the damper).

= Press the finger on the string after the damper aprox. at of the
string so the 4th harmonic can be heard.

= Suggests the sounding note. It is not notated in every place

where we can find a different sounding note from the one played.

= The performer has the right to choose whether he will play or

not the note between the square brackets. The note can be played only 1
time per sign.
= The performer can use the elements within the box/boxes as he
wishes.

= Visual suggestion on the length of the phrase. Has nothing to do

with the usual legato.

Notes
1.1. The performer can put some metallic things on the strings in the high
register of the piano, if he wishes to. It is totally up to the performer,
how and if the wants to prepare that register of the piano.
1.2. Some of the extended techniques used are not possible on Steinway
Pianos. The piece can still be played on one, but some of the desired
effects will be different or unavailable.

2.1. While the tempo indication is Molto rubato, not fast , the performer
should pay attention to phrasing, as this is an feature of this piece. There
are a lot of notes that should be overlapped, not doing so might damage
the phrasing structure.

3.1.1. The trills in the boxes can be as long/short and as fast/slow as the
performer wants to.

3.1.2. The notes in the upper stave can be as long as the performer wants.
Usually the trill will cover the upper voice, so the notation used is just a
suggestion.

3.1.3. The performer should move the position of his fingers on the strings
corresponding the notes in the lower stave as he wishes, so he can create
different colors of the same note.

3.2 The stems are present just for better visibility of the notes, it should
not influence the performers freedom of choice regarding the rhythm.

4.0 The empty staves from the 2nd page have no practical/musical use
apart from an easier read of the other staves.
