Despiteproducing93percentoftheCommonwealthsemissionsfree
electricityandavoiding37milliontonsofcarbonemissionstheequivalentof
keeping10millioncarsofftheroadeveryyearnuclearpowerisnotincluded
inthestatesAlternativeEnergyPortfolioStandard(AEPS).Yet16cleanpower
sourcesincludingsolar,windandhydroenergyaresupportedbythisstate
energypolicy.
AmendingtheAEPSisoneofmanypotentialsolutionstopreserve
Pennsylvaniasnuclearplants.Otheroptionsincludeestablishingazero
emissionscreditprogram,similartotheapproachbeingimplementedinIllinois
andNewYork.Exeloniscommittedtoworkingwithitsstakeholderstofindthe
bestsolutionforPennsylvaniaonethatwillmaintainnuclearenergys$2
billionannualcontributiontothestateseconomyanditsapproximately16,000
directandindirectPennsylvaniajobs.
TMIdirectlyemploys675workersandcontractsanother1,500localunion
workersforrefuelingoutages.Thestationprovidesmorethan$1millioninstate
propertytaxesandmorethan$300,000inlocalcommunitygivingeachyear.
Exelonshighlytrainedemployeeswillcontinuetooperatetheplantatworld
classlevelsofexcellence,withstafftransitionsexpectedwithinsixmonthsof
theplantsfinalshutdown.
