ECOI31421. Economic Department Seminar:
"Business History"
Xavier Caron, Teacher
Wednesday 1.15 to 4.15pm crn 106

Introduction/Learning outcomes:
The objective of this course is to draw lessons from business history in the fields of: (1) entrepreneurship, innovation and growth strategies; (2)
management and corporate structure; (3) consumption and marketing techniques; (4) banking and corporate finance.
The course is not a finance course, nor a strategy course, nor a marketing course but it allows the students to draw on their competencies within these
areas. Students can also expect to appreciate the concept of globalization, and the interaction of business activities with various national and international
environments stretching back to the ancient period.

Topics:
The course will focus on:
The origin of capitalism in the antiquity and lessons drawn by ancient history;
Merchant capitalism (the LP/GP relationship) and the transition to industrial capitalism;
The consistency of entrepreneurship models and family companies behaviour from the XIXth century to today;
Innovation economics and Schumpeterian entrepreneurs;
Corporate structure, strategy and M&A in an historical perspective;
History of Banking and finance and recent transition to the money-managers capitalism era;
Consumer behaviour and media economics from the XIXth century to today.

Teaching methods:
The approach is mainly thematic through industry and case studies. It focuses on the role played by entrepreneurs and managers in their historical context.
Students will work on many real case studies. They are expected to prepare the cases and read the articles that are indicated, and to actively participate in
class

Grading pattern:
The three hours in-class final quiz will comprise a MCQ and one or two case studies.

Bibliography:
A detailed bibliography will be given to the students. The following books could be used as introductory readings:
Angus Maddison, The World Economy: Historical Statistics, OECD Development Centre, 2004
John Micklethwait & Adrian Woolridge, The Company, A Short Story of a Revolutionary Idea, Phoenix, 2003
Joel Mokyr, Twenty-five centuries of technological change An historical survey, New-York, Harwood, 1990.

IDSI31421. IDSI Department Seminar:
"Applied Cybersecurity Strategy for Managers?"
Jean-Loup Richet, Teacher
Tuesday 1.15 to 4.15pm crn 69

This seminar provides students with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge on different topics in information systems. The content will depend on professors'
current interests and latest developments.

Back in the 1900s, cash was stored in safe-deposit boxes; businessmen knew the risks of being robbed in the streets on their way home from a late-night sitting of
work; most of them knew how to protect their shops; some of them were aware of the impact of geopolitical conflicts on their businesses.
Today: Our marketing is digital. Our business is digital. Even warfare is digital.
And very few managers know how to cope with digital threats.
Successful start-up MtGox filed for bankruptcy after being hacked and losing $480 million.
Target was hacked and compromised 40 million customer credit/debit cardsthe CEO and the CIO were fired following this incident.
Why the LSE, Tepper, Krannert, MIT, and INSEAD launched cybersecurity courses for their MBA students? Because this is a very managerial and strategic topic.
In this course, no IT knowledge is required. We will stay at a strategic level throughout the course.
You will make acquaintance with cybersecurity strategy and risk management methods, you will have an understanding of crisis management and communication,
and an appreciation of the main issues and challenges in cybersecurity.
