Exam Project (7): Self-Portrait

Theme: Alter-Ego
Who is your second half?
In this project, you will create a self-portrait drawing that illustrates your alter-ego
or other half. The initial drawing will be created be using the grid method. Your
goal is to create a design which incorporates the different concepts you learned
throughout the trimester. The composition should showcase a(n):

Original Idea Unique to You and Your Thoughts Based on Theme

Alter-Ego
Proper Proportions of a Human Face
Strong Sense of Form Through Shading (Value)
Understanding of the Structure of a Human Face
An Interesting Composition
Sense of Movement, Strong Focal Point, Unity, Balance,
Contrast)
Understanding of Proper Technique With Each Choice of Material

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Brainstorm Your Theme

The definition of Alter-Ego is as follows, A persons secondary or alternate personality. Using your
preferred method of brainstorming, form a range of possible ideas. For an example, Spider Man is
the alter-ego of Peter Parker. Yours could be something like a werewolf, leader of a jungle
exploration, an alien, and the list goes on!

Step 2: Determine Your Photo, How You Will Edit This Photo, and Choice of Materials
We will be using a reference photo for this project. So after you determine your alter-ego, consider what photo of you will work best.
You want to be sure you can unify this photo with your alter-ego. Pay attention to direction of eyes, pose, facial expression, etc. Then,
determine how you will transform your photo into your alter-ego. I would suggest completing a series of thumbnail sketches to do so.
Lastly, decide what materials you would like to use. The list of materials offered are the ones we used throughout the trimester: pen and
ink, marker, graphite pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, or chalk pastel.

Step 3: Prepare Your Paper and Photo

First, create an accurate 1.5 border on your 18 x 24 of drawing paper. Then, on this border make a mark every 3. Connect the lines
to form your grid. Then, to create a grid on your photo, make a mark every 1 around the outer edges of your photo. Connect the lines
to form the grid. You are now ready to draw!

Step 4: Draw Contour Lines of Your Portrait Using the Grid Method
Focusing on one box at a time, draw the contour lines (no value, light lines!) in each box to form your portrait. Look at the entire drawing
only at the end. This is a great time to make edits to the entire drawing if needed. Note: You are proportionately enlarging the photo in
your drawing since your boxes are larger on your drawing paper than on your photo.

Step 5: Add Materials of Choice

Before adding material, make a thumbnail sketch in your sketchbook and plan your process of how you will add material. Review
demonstrations we did in class and look up further instructions on how to use the materials. In all, be sure to do your research and test
all methods out once more before starting on your final to get those small failures out of the way. :)

Step 6:Turn-In Your Project

Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit folder on Schoology.
You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
