Unit 3: The Canterbury Tales ~ Characterization/ Research Project Creative Assessment
Objectives: You will attend a party, in character as an assigned pilgrim. You will also complete the following: 1.
Research 2. Perform a monologue and mingle at the party 3. Write an explanation and reflection piece

During reading: You will be assigned to embody the ethos of one character on the pilgrimage. While we read and analyze The
Canterbury Tales, you need to take copious notes on your character. You need to delve into your characters inner workings to
become him or her in behavior, thought, and speech.

At the party: Upon arrival at the dinner party, there will be time for socialization and casual conversation. As you mingle at the
party with other pilgrims, you must keep in character, and you must also wear one symbolic prop that helps reveal your
pilgrims identity.

Formal Introductions: After the mocktail hour, you will present a one-minute monologue introducing yourself to the class.
Again, do not state the pilgrims name because we want to guess your pilgrims identity! You will have researched your
pilgrims profession, social status, etc. and will relay these details in your monologue. For example, if you are the knight, you
would research and explain the rules and codes that medieval knights honored.

After the party: You will write a reflection piece explaining the creative process.

Requirements for one-minute monologue:

Below are some ideas to help you write your monologue. You do not need to include all of this information; in fact, if you
want to talk about other topics, that is fine. However, you must complete the following: 1. Dont say your name! 2. Explain
why you (the pilgrim) are on this pilgrimage. 3. You must wear one prop at the party. 4. You must have your monologue
memorized.
Suggestions:
Identify your social class
Discuss favorite hobbies
Tell us where you live (city, country, etc.)
Who are your friends?
Tell us a fun fact (Research portion will help you answer this question)
Identify your favorite band/musician (make it a current selectionits okay we are time travelers)
Whats your prized possession?

Research:
Use the SICP Databases to research two (2) articles (biography, primary sources, etc. to enhance your understanding of the
character) and ANNOTATE them. You will submit both annotated articles to Google Classroom.

Written Portion (Explanation / Reflection)

After delivering your monologue, you must submit a written explanation of the following:
Identify the details/attributes you chose to include in your monologue and why
Describe what your learned about your pilgrim from the General Prologue; explain what you think is Chaucers
purpose for including this pilgrim in the General Prologue.
Your reflection (one paragraph) should also:
Describe the challenges and rewards of the creative process. Share any insights you experienced while working on
