Diabetes mellitus, in its course, might develop complications such as diabetic foot
ulcer and an increased risk of lower extremity amputations. The impaired arterial
circulation in the legs could be measured by Ankle Brachial Index (ABI). The aim
of this research is to analyze the relationship between ABI and the incidence of
diabetic foot ulcer in diabetic patients in RSUD Ulin Banjarmasin in July
August 2012. The method of this research uses an analytic observational survey
with cross-sectional approach using chi-square test with 95% confidence level.
The result has showed that diabetic patients with diabetic foot ulcer who had
unfavourable ABI values were 26 (43.33%) subjects and those who had
favourable ABI values were 34 (56.67%) subjects, whereas diabetic patients
without diabetic foot ulcer who had unfavourable ABI values were 6 (10%)
subjects and those who had favourable ABI values were 54 (90%) subjects. Data
analysis has indicated that there has been a significant relationship between ABI
and the incidence of diabetic foot ulcer (p = 0.000, POR = 6.882, 95% CI =
2.568-18.447). An unfavourable ABI values (ABI values 0,9) in diabetes
mellitus patients could have improved the incidence of diabetic foot ulcer as 7
times up to normal. It was concluded that there was an increased risk of diabetic
foot ulcer in diabetic patients who had unfavourable ABI values in RSUD Ulin
Banjarmasin in July August 2012.
