It was well past midnight the night
before Jeanette Feifarek started her
first day at Sugar Creek Elementary
School, and she was still setting up
her classroom.
She had to call home to let her par-
ents know she was OK, so she walked
to the corner gas station to use a
pay phone there were no cell phones
in 1984.
Thirty-three years later, Feifarek
and two other longtime SC teachers
are preparing for their final days at the
school and not expecting any more

Sexism and racism are at the
root of many of our domestic
problems in this country. It was
appropriate that Beth Maglio,
a Mount Horeb teacher in a

which demonstrated the gender
inequalities and maltreatment of
women.
I was saddened to see that
Maglio was suspended by Mount
Horeb district superintendent
Steve Salerno after complaints
that the video contained visuals
that some might find offensive
for including nude and graphic
images.
The video has been rated
acceptable for anyone 14 years
and older. It is, yet again, an
example of how our white male
dominated society is threatened
by something that explores how
women are underrepresented in
positions of power and influence

My coworkers and I admitted-
ly uphold neighborhood segrega-
tion in our workplace. We make
lazy assumptions about a childs
ethnicity and class background
as soon as they walk through the
door.
These kids wont take the SAT
for 10 years, but their scores
seem predetermined. Data about
the great score divide com-
piled by Brookings Institution
shows that Asian and white
students outperform blacks and
Latinos on the SAT. But before
jumping to dangerous con-
clusions, we would do well to
remember that the test score gap
is actually a result of segrega-
tion, not individual achievement.
The racial homogeneity of
birthday parties is an example
of the voluntary societal group-
ings that contribute to student
achievement gaps. According
to another Times story, in New
York Citys public schools,
Black and Latino children here
have become increasingly iso-
lated, with 85 percent of black
students and 75 percent of Lati-
no students attending intensely
segregated schools schools
that are less than 10 percent
white.
I know what youre thinking:
test scores are miniscule in the
grand scheme of life. But racial
gaps in test scores are alarming
symptoms of racialized poverty.
A vicious cycle results:
achievement gaps heighten race-
based disparities which, in turn,
limit educational opportunity
and social mobility for minori-
ties, according to a Stanford
University, Racial and Ethnic
Achievement Gaps.
Kids in a bounce house are
not thinking about their class
background or futures. Right
now, they probably all try hard
in school. But, for minority chil-
dren, the deck is stacked against
them.

Shrew, at 2 p.m. and
7p.m. Saturday, June 3,
and 2p.m. Sunday, June
4, at the VAHS Performing
Arts Center.
According to a news
release, the show is about
a Lord (Isabela Oliveira)
who comes upon a drunk
Christopher Sly (Rory
Swanson) and decides to
deceive him into believing
that he is actually the lord
of a wealthy household.
The Lord dresses Sly in
the finest clothes, has his
servants serve him, and
entertains him with a play.
In this play, there are two
sisters who both want to
wed. Bianca (Alex Per-
ouansky), a fair young
lady, has many suitors, but
none may marry her until
her older sister, (Katherine
Natalie Long), also known
as a shrew among the
townsfolk, is wed.
In order to marry Bian-
ca, one of Biancas suit-
ors sets out to find a man
who is willing to take on
a shrew as a wife. Such
a man is found by the
name of Petruchio (Kirk
Grimes), and he is quite
the match for Katherine.

Rhapsody Arts
Amateur and professional
musicians alike will share
the spotlight this weekend
for a fundraiser at Grays
Tied House.
Rhapsody Arts Center
will hold its 11th annual
Spring Fling Party for the
Arts: The Band is Back! at
the restaurant, 950 Kimball
Lane, from 4-6p.m. Sun-
day, June 4.
The event will feature
live pop music performanc-
es by Rhapsody students
and a professional back-up
band. There will be a silent
auction, drawings, prizes,
food and beverages, and
kids and adults can also
dress up like rock stars for a
costume contest.
The end-of-school-year
fundraiser, which is open
to the public, will benefit
Rhapsodys new and exist-
ing community outreach
programs. The suggested
donation is $20 per family
at the door.
The back-up band will
include Jim Ripp (pia-
no), Phil Smithburg (bass
Natalie Long performs her lines as Katherine during

Petruchio, as well as that
of Bianca and her suitors,
in a fun and comedic battle
of wits.
Other main characters in
the show include Lucentio
(Caulden Parkel), Tranio

(Hannah Amell), Hortensio
(Daphne Buan) and Bap-
tista (Seasmus Angell).
The cost is $7 for adults

kick-off June 10
While you never know
exactly what kind of weath-
er Wisconsin is going to
bring you, summer always
seems to bring a good sea-
son for reading, whether its
books or Nooks.
Wi t h s u m m e r a n d
apparently summer weather
still a few weeks away,
the Verona Public Library
is giving people a head start
on their book list.
Registration begins
Thursday, June 1, for the
librarys summer reading
program, which runs from
June 12 to July 21. Kids
and teens complete reading
logs for coupons and prizes,
and adults can enter to win
$50 gift certificates to local
businesses each week they
read a book.
There will be plenty of
activities for the whole
family to enjoy the next
six weeks at the library.
It all starts with the kick-
off event from 10a.m. to
noon Saturday, June 10,
featuring snow cones, face
paint, a scavenger hunt,
crafts and balloon show by
Half Twisted-Half Knot at
11a.m.
Then the library will host
more programs each Thurs-
day afternoon, such as a
live animal show, music and
yo-yo and juggling comedi-
ans.

several weeks. It was a blessing to share my house with
these good friends who I have known and loved for many
years, but our different habits of loading and unloading
the dishwasher became a source of real annoyance. It
wasnt that they were leaving dishes in the sink, but that
they had the habit of turning the dishwasher off before
they left the house, so I couldnt always tell whether the
dishes had been done or not. Eventually we had to talk
about it and figure out a way to keep all of us happy.
Loading and unloading the dishwasher is one of those
ordinary acts of kindness and consideration that goes
a long way towards keeping our relations smooth and
friendly. These are the kinds of things that considerate
people do as a part of their everyday life. Never underes-
timate the importance of these minor things like loading
and unloading the dishwasher. What else in your every-
day life has the potential to irritate those around you?

such as whether you hang up your coat when you come
inside, or whether you replace the roll of toilet paper.

At a young age, I babysat all the time and learned that I
enjoyed spending time with kids. I loved looking at the world
through their eyes. It was instructive and inspiring to me.
What is a favorite memory of your time in VASD?
I remember driving in one morning and Ken, our janitor,
was on a sweeper machine cleaning the parking lot. I just
came from McDonalds and started throwing my trash out
the window in all directions. He didnt know it was me right
away which was hilarious. I loved seeing him smile.
What are some of the top challenges facing educators
today?
One of the major challenges facing educators is for soci-
ety to build the capacity to keep teachers in the field for lon-
ger than five years. Some serious work needs to be done in
examining the obstacles of this profession to make it more
appealing to enter the field as an undergrad student and also
for new teachers.
What will you miss about teaching?
I will dearly miss all of my wonderful colleagues and I will
also miss the daily energy of being in an environment filled
with young people. Its an amazing microcosm of our larger
society.
Why are you retiring now?
My career has been so satisfying and rewarding but I also
realize that its important to create space for new staff, new
energy, and new ideas.
What are your plans for retirement?
This fall I plan to continue my education by becoming a
senior guest auditor at UW-Madison and take classes of my
choosing. I also plan to ride my new retirement road bike,
join a book club, learn drumming, secure a part-time job and
hopefully travel to see friends on the off season to finally get
the great deals!

Verona boys tennis won first-round
matches at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles and No.
1 doubles but finished runner-up in all four
flights. The Wildcats had a shot to return
to the state tournament had they won three
of the four championship matches but
instead the team finished second to Mad-
ison West 35-30.
The Wildcats entered sectionals trail-
ing Madison West by two points, but the
Regents won title at Nos. 3 and 4 singles
and No. 2 doubles and finished third at
No. 3 doubles.
I thought it was going to be close,
even though we lost those first couple
matches to Memorial and West, Vero-
na coach Rick Engen said. I thought we
were improving all year, and I thought we
played well toward the end of the season.
We were right there all day until the last
couple of matches.
West is a good team. They play dou-
bles really well and got some singles

School baseball team trav-
eled to Janesville Craig on
Thursday for a potential
sectional final preview and
dropped the game, 7-1.
Coach Brad DOrazio said
the Cougars are really good,
and playing them twice, as
well as the rest of the Big
Eight schedule, should hope-
fully prepare the Wildcats to
play their best baseball.
You have to play smart
and do the little things, he
said. You cant make mis-
takes because, in the play-
offs, no one wants to go
home.
The Cougars pitched their
No. 1 Evan Spry, but Verona
didnt have its No. 1 pitcher
on the mound. And six of
Janesvilles seven runs were
scored on errors.

Tennison was unable to
ignite the same fire he had
at the Big Eight Conference
tournament. He fell 6-7 (5),
6-4, 13-11 in the sectional
championship.
Will played hard today. He
was really out of gas by the
end, Engen said. He beat
Colt fairly handily last time
(6-4, 6-2), and I think that was
in his head, but hes a fighter.
The Verona sophomore beat

ards 6-0, 6-0 in the opening
round to qualify for state.

of your nervous energy out,
Tennison said. Im just try-
ing to focus on my flight and
doing the best I can to help the
team. Im cheering for them,

sons for that as each finished with a 78
to lead Verona. Kaegi finished third
overall in a scorecard playoff. Keller-
man was sixth overall.
I am proud of our team and what
we did this season, Kaegi said.
Today, whenever I had a bad shot I
had my team in the back of my mind.
I couldnt be selfish and get down on
myself and just had to grind it out for
Kaegi was on the green in two
shots during the first playoff hole. He
two-putted for a par to make state.
Rebholz said Kaegi had a bulldog
mentality after the first nine holes at
regionals, and he continued today.
He was just steady the whole way
around, Rebholz said. His tempo of
his game, the tempo which he walks
and goes through his process and tem-
po of hitting the ball is quick. I think
that makes him a good playoff player
too.
Middletons Andy Zucker was on
the green in two, as well, and Kell-
erman needed to punch out to the
fairway and get on the green in three
shots after his tee shot went right into
the rough.
Zucker had a chance to make state
twice on that first playoff hole but
three-putted. Kellerman two-putted to
remain alive.
However, the second playoff hole
was similar for both Kellerman and
Zucker. Kellerman was in the rough
on his tee shot and had to punch the
ball out to the fairway. Zucker was on
the green in two.
Kellerman once again two-putted
for a bogey, but Zucker was able to
tap-in for a par to get the final state
spot.
He not only put himself in that
position, he put the team in that posi-
tion, Rebholz said. It was a struggle
getting out of the gates for some of us,
Steven included.
Junior Jack Bates finished tied for
16th with an 81, and freshman Cale
Rufenacht was tied for 23rd with an

ing game. I will miss watching them discover something
extraordinary about themselves when they try something
new. I think I will actually miss them saying, What are
you doing, Mrs. Doing? I will also miss my colleagues,
who totally rock. I work, every day, with extremely tal-
ented and caring people, and Im very grateful for their
patent support for our music program over the years.
Why are you retiring now?
I feel like its the right time to explore other opportuni-
ties and to see what life is like outside of school between
September and June!
What are your plans for retirement?
My husband and I have planned to go on Safari in
South Africa in August. After that Im looking forward
to expanding my garden, travelling more (especially in
the winter), and visiting more frequently with my Mom
in Connecticut and my kids in California, Minnesota and
here in Wisconsin.
