ABSTRACT

Background : The number of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients worldwide keeps
increasing and is considered a health problem which will become an epidemic in the next
decade. Palliative treatment is no longer exclusive for late-stage cancer patients, but also for
kidney failure patients. A good palliative treatment requires a comprehensive action from
several medical providers. An effective teamwork aming these teams is the key factor of
achieveing an increased quality of life and patient safety
Case: The patients, Mrs. E, 56 years old, was diagnoses with chronic kidney disease and
requires hemodialysis two times a week. At the startof the treatment, the patient became very
emotional and resisted the hemodialysis process. The patient had frequently visited the ER
due to inability of urinating and defecating, which leads to the patient becoming unconscious
and requiring ICU care. CT scan revealed a mass in the brain. In the state of unconsciousness,
the patient received hemodialysis twice with the consent of her family. Now, the patient
seems to accept her condtition due to the continous motivation from her family, doctors and
nurses.
Discussion: A good teamwork between medical providers treating chronic kidney disease
patients undergoing hemodialysis is a comprehensive action. In hemodialysis, a good
teamwork between nurses, attending physician, nephrologists, nutritionists, psychiatrists and
other medical providers is expected. Doctors and the patients family must provide support
and motivation. Doctors and nurses involved in hemodialysis are also expected to have a
standardized education and training. These factors have a great impact in the patients quality
of life.
Conclusion: Teamwork among medical providers, or medical teamwork, have a great impact
in the treatment of chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis, and is a form of
comprehensive medical treatment for increasing the patients quality of life.
