PREFACE

First of all, we are from XI-9 want to express our thanks to Allah SWT, because of
His bless and grace, the entitled English Report About Poem And Short Story can be
finished on time.

This paper is a requirement to fulfill the assignment from Mrs. Nanik Wahyuningsih,
Sp.d. the English teacher of SMAN 5 Surabaya. We also thank to her for all the guidance to
complete it.

In completing this paper, we were faced many problems, but with the help of many
people, all the problems could be passed. May Allah SWT give the blessing for them.
It provides how the preparation before we finished our book about poem and short story.
Although this paper has many deficiencies in the arrangement and explanation, we hope that
it can be used as a reference for the reader to understand it.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

I.1 Background of Making Short Story and Poem

Making short story and poem is need for student daily school activity, especially in
writing activity and this activity is done after PAT finished or we have 1 month before the
deadline.
Making short story and poem is one of the activity that is done by students and other
task which according with each competence. Making short story and poem is the way to
develop and improve student ability in writing activity. Based on making short story and
poem, students will learn how to create a new concept in writing, and students also will learn
a lot of how to build a skilled expertise and personality.

I.2 Purpose

The purpose of make short story and poem:


1. Gain insigt and knowledge on how to make a short story and poem.
2. Build a skilled expertise and personality
3. Inspiring for creating other short story or poem.
4. Have more creativity to make something different beside make short story and poem.
5. Develop and improve student intellect.
6. Getting score.

I.3 Benefit

Benefits of making short stories :


1. A certainty you can finished your own short story in short time too.
2. A convenient way to try new genres of other your own short story.
3. A way to bring back the habit of daily written

Benefit of making poem :


1. Poetry helps us know each other and build community.
2. When read aloud, poetry is rhythm and music and sounds and beats.
3. Poetry opens venues for speaking and listening, much neglected domains of a robust
English Language Arts curriculum.
4. Poetry has space for English Language Learners. Because poems defy rules, poetry can be
made accessible for beginner. Poems can be easily scaffold and students can find ways of
expressing their voices while being limited in their vocabulary.
5. Poetry builds resilience in kids and adults; it fosters Social and Emotional Learning. A
well-crafted phrase or two in a poem can help us see an experience in an entirely new way.

CHAPTER II
THEORY

II.1 Short Story

One of the most resilient forms of entertainment is the short story. Historically always
been a popular mode of amusement. It provides a distraction that can enjoyed quickly. A short
story is like a special treat; a chocolate bonbon, a lemon bar, or tuna roll to be consumed in
one delightful scrumptious session. Unlike longer fiction a short story is a self-contained bit
of excitement that the reader digests with secret satisfaction in a brief interlude. It has
evolved over the centuries from the narrative tale spun around night campfires to the written
story contained within the covers of a slick magazine. Depending on the current pre-dominate
media of information dissemination the short story form is morphed to its style remaining an
extremely popular method of entertaining in a wide variety of presentation forms; written,
oral or visual. Today the short story is still a dynamic active ingredient of our increasing
blend of entertainment choices. Although the growing tendency to passively view short
video programs that pre-dominate peoples current entertainment habits reduced the time
spent reading the value of reading short stories endures. When you engage anyone introduce
the topic of short stories, they will all have a favorite and be happy to retell it to you.
Unfortunately, more and more adults hark back to a childrens story their parents read to them
or that they read to their children since they are not actively engaged readers. There is always
a core of the reading public that sustains the value of a short story, which composes a
vigorous reading audience. Material presented on television is plagued by commercial
interruptions that make it extremely difficult to deliver the punch and pizza that a short story
read alone, late at night; provides in the comfort of a quiet dark house devoid of all
interruptions, electronic noise or distractions. One of the keys to the intense impact of a short
story is that it is read without interruptions. It evolves within your mind. It can therefore
capture the emotions desired to increase the readers intensity and pleasure.

Short stories are required to follow all the rules of sound fiction writing but are
constricted in terms of scope and number of characters that may be included. They must race
from segment to segment, perhaps skipping one altogether and conclude in a convincing
crescendo. While the novelist may wander leisurely about while developing their themes,
locations and characters, a short story writer has to strip their tale, honing it into a sharp
parsimonious package. That package may even compress or accelerate to catch the critical
story elements pulling the reader along in a fresh and vivid fabrication. While a short story is
always direct, swift and exhilarating it must be fulfilling.

Why have short stories always sustained us? They provide a rapid medium
of entertainment and they do not require a long attention span nor strain our memory.
Someone can hear or read a short story in a brief period and feel very entertained, satisfied
and enlightened. The pulp fiction titillating short story read behind closed doors in some
sense may be considered tainted or trashy. However, an engaging short story is an excellent
form of entertainment no matter where it may be published

II.2 Poem or Poetry

Poetry is a literary work in verse writing of high quality, great beauty, a piece of art,
with emotional sincerity or intensity, a graceful expression showing imagination and deep
feeling with beautiful and elegant quality. It is a profound insight that enables a poet to
idealize reality and to see the things or situations in a particular way, to express his feelings of
his own accord and to represent them in such a way as to delight the readers.

It is the quality of a great poetry through which the creeds and the system of human
values are discussed that a reader may ultimately be enlightened and rejoiced. Poetry is also a
good source of freeing somebody from ignorance, misdeeds or evils while it inspires and
encourages us; instills in us noble thoughts by dealing very much with the ways we live in.

The art or the skill of writing poems in a particular language or form is a natural gift
or it may be acquired ability by which a poet deals with the reality of life. It is through the art
of poetry that the universal facts are represented. The way a poet idealizes reality and
represents the things accordingly rouses our admiration to the art of poetry. Thus, adoption of
a narrow view about poetry that it gives us not reality is out of place when one reads poetry
and gets inspired and delighted. And the notion that poetry employs artificial language is also
incorrect when it is considered on the grounds of diction and poetic beauty and its excellence
through which it has since long inspired the readers. Hence, one should turn to poetry to
interpret life and to console himself that the poetry relates to our personal life.

There are a lot of poems of great poets available to read and interpret what they have
tried to convey. The message of poems about life and the state of affairs may be understood
and are to be applied in our personal life. In this way, poetry teaches us the lessons about how
to live life providing the meaning of life.

In whatever form or a language the poetry is written, poetry is after all poetry with an
objective of consoling, encompassing a great power and appeal to delight the reader while
heightening an awareness of various situations and discussing the aspects of life. This leads
us to understand and interpret what has been written, with what objective so that the purpose
of a poem or specific verses may be served well

THE IMPLEMENTATION FOR MAKING SHORT STORY AND POEM

III.1 Place And Date

Making short story and poem started from April 2017 until PAT finished on 24 th May
2017 at SMAN 5 Surabaya and at home.

III.2 Preparation

We prepared something before making short story and poem, there are :
1. We make two group for each topic between short story group and poem group.
2. Then, some of XI-9s students coordinate their friends to choose the group they want
joined.
3. After we finished for determine the group of short story and poem, we started to make
short story and poem until the deadline that already announced by Mrs. Nanik, our English
teacher.

III.3 Activity

First week
The students prepared all they need to make short story and poem after we determine the
group of short story and poem. Then, they started to find their own topic for short story or
poem and create that.

Second week
In this time, the students are going to finished their short story and poem. After all
students finished, they gathered their own short story and poem on each coordinator of short
story and poem.

Third week
The coordinator of short story and poem started to organize their group result of short
story and poem to book of each group. Then, they send their soft copy of books on printing
office to get the hard copy of the books.

Fourth week
Finally, we get the books after waiting 5-7 days for printing process of short story and
poems books and then give it to Mrs. Nanik Wahyuningsih S.pd., for fulfill her English
assignment and get the score.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

IV.1 Conclusion

Making short story and poem is very useful helping student to get more experience in
writing activity. With writing, students will learn a lot of independent, creative, discipline,
and how to create short story or poem with well. Beside it, student skill and competence will
increase after do the writing activity by making short story and poem.

IV.2 Suggestion

As for the suggestion that we want to, namely:


1. For students
Before executing for making short story and poem, should better prepare what we need to
make short story and poem.

3. For Teacher
There, after the students finished their preparation for making short story and poem, teacher
must to lead them, so that the students know how to make short story and poem well.

Special thanks to our beloved teacher, Mrs. Nanik Wahyuningsih, S.Pd., who is such
an inspiration to us. Without her guide, we wouldnt be able to have this English assignment
done. Mrs. Nanik Wahyuningsih, Sp.d. is amazing English teacher who teaches us with
patiently. She is an interesting teacher and smart teacher. By making this task, we have learn
a lot about how to create story and poem with our fantastic imaginary.

Finally, the most admirable thanks are addressed to God the almighty, Allah SWT for
his blessing us with much energy and granting a lot of ideas, so we can finished this English
assignment well.
