Figure 1 : Geocean protis

Pipe dimension :
Pipe size : 36 inch grade X56
Pipe distance to onshore facilities : 180km

Figure 2 : Pipe properties

According to the mentioned barge which is Geocean Protis, pipelaying

will be done by S-laying methode, because Geocean Protis is a S-laying
pipeline barge. 36 inch pipe chosen because that pipe used in the real pluto
platform pipeline which already have been installed.
The radius of the stinger should be large enough so that the pipeline
does not experiencep lastic deformations. In order to assure this, the
bending stress should not exceed 85% of the SMYS (Specified Minimum
Yield Stress ). The minimum over-bend radius is calculated using :

So , R = 207000 MPa * 0.91 m / (2* 386 * 0.85) = 443.2 m

Calculating the hydrostatic pressure :
P= p * g * h
So, P= 1025 * 10 * 85 = 871.250 Pa
Then we calculate the allowed external pressure, according to Piping
and Pipeline Engineering by George Antaki . The allowed external
pressure is given by below equation :

We wanna know the thickness of the pipe, so using above equation we

get =
So, 871250= 2*207000/1-0.272*(x/0.91)3= 1.1375 inch
From the formula above we found that pipe thicknesss of 1.1375 inch is
needed to handle the external force. In this scenario the external force is
only hydrostatic force.
After that we analyze the free span scenario because the sea surface is
not smooth.
Using following parameter for the environmental condition :
Also we defince the soil character like following :

And also the pipeline design parameter

Then we calculate the pipeline section properties :

From Equation and calculation above we know the external pressure is
123.556 psi
Those formula are based on DNV 1981 and DNV RP E305, and calculated
using Mathcad software to input the formula and calculate the result.
From those calculation we found the Critical pipespan due to dynamic
loading is 259.523 ft and Critical pipespan due to statical loading is
196.86 ft.

Summary
From the scenario given above we may conclude summary :
Geocean Sentris pipelaying vessel can be used to conduct S-laying
method using its stinger but we need to set so the stinger radius is
not smaller than 443.2 m so the pipe wont fail.
From hydrostatic pressure calculation we found that the pipe
thickness must be minimum of 1.375 inch to stand the external
force if we want to use the 36 inch dim pipe.
The critical pipespan due to dynamic loading is 259.523 ft
The critical pipespan due to static loading is 196.86 ft
