Cranmers Prophecy
(Shakespeare, Henry VIII)
This royal infant heaven still move about her!
Though in her cradle, yet now promises
Upon this land a thousand thousand blessings,
Which time shall bring to ripeness: she shall be
But few now living can behold that goodness
A pattern to all princes living with her,
And all that shall succeed: []
She shall be loved and fear'd: her own shall bless her;
Her foes shake like a field of beaten corn,
And hang their heads with sorrow: good grows with her:
In her days every man shall eat in safety,
Under his own vine, what he plants; and sing
The merry songs of peace to all his neighbours:
God shall be truly known; and those about her
From her shall read the perfect ways of honour,
And by those claim their greatness, not by blood.

Nor shall this peace sleep with her: but as when

The bird of wonder dies, the maiden phoenix,
Her ashes new create another heir,
As great in admiration as herself;
So shall she leave her blessedness to one,
When heaven shall call her from this cloud of darkness,
Who from the sacred ashes of her honour
Shall star-like rise, as great in fame as she was,
And so stand fix'd: peace, plenty, love, truth, terror,
That were the servants to this chosen infant,
Shall then be his, and like a vine grow to him:
Wherever the bright sun of heaven shall shine,
His honour and the greatness of his name
Shall be, and make new nations: he shall flourish,
And, like a mountain cedar, reach his branches
To all the plains about him: our children's children
Shall see this, and bless heaven.

In garment all of gold downe to the ground:
Yet rode he not, but led a louely Mayd
Forth by the lilly hand, the which was cround
With eares of corne, and full her hand was found;
That was the righteous Virgin, which of old
Liv'd here on earth, and plenty made abound;
But, after Wrong was lovd and Iustice solde,

Il discorso a Tilbury (1588)

My loving people,
I have been persuaded by some that are careful of my safety, to take
heed how I committed myself to armed multitudes, for fear of
treachery. But I tell you that I would not desire to live to distrust
my faithful and loving people. Let tyrants fear: I have so behaved
myself that under God I have placed my chiefest strength and
safeguard in the loyal hearts and goodwill of my subjects.
Wherefore I am come among you at this time but for my recreation
and pleasure, being resolved in the midst and heat of the battle to
live and die amongst you all, to lay down for my God and for my
kingdom and for my people mine honour and my blood even in the
dust. I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman, but I
have the heart and stomach of a king and of a king of England too
and take foul scorn that Parma or any prince of Europe should
dare to invade the borders of my realm.

Il discorso a Tilbury (1588)

To the which rather than any dishonor shall grow by me, I myself
will venter my royal blood; I myself will be your general, judge, and
rewarder of your virtue in the field. I know that already for your
forwardness you have deserved rewards and crowns; and I assure
you in the word of a prince you shall not fail of them. In the
meantime, my lieutenant general shall be in my stead, than whom
never prince commanded a more noble or worthy subject. Not
doubting but by your concord in the camp and valor in the field
and your obedience to myself and my general, we shall shortly have
a famous victory over these enemies of my God and of my
kingdom.
