Nutrition definitions

Energy (kilojoules) A ____ is simply a measure of energy. In order for our bodies to function, we need

Carbohydrates Broken down by the body into simple sugars. These sugars circulate in the blood stream and
are used by the bodys cells for energy. The brain also uses one of these simple sugars (glucose)

Fat A source of kilojoules (energy) and essential fatty acids. It is used as insulation to keep us
warm, protection for vital organs and to carry fat-soluble vitamins.
Fibre & whole grains The indigestible part of plants that passes relatively unchanged through the stomach and
intestines. It is mostly made up of carbohydrates, which consist of different types of sugars.
Aids in easy digestion.

Calcium A mineral that is found in foods, which is stored in bones and teeth in our body. It is essential
for growth and development of children and adolescents as it maintain strong bones and teeth
while also assisting in muscle contractions, nerve stimulations and regulating blood pressure.
Sodium/Salt Formed from sodium and chloride and is commonly added to food to improve taste, but also
for food preservation.
Vitamins & Minerals Compounds necessary for the healthy functioning of our bodies. Vital to help us grow, to see
properly, to make bones, muscles, skin and organs, as well as to help us battle infections.
