ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS
Subject: Finite Element Method Class: BE CIVIL IV year II
semester( AY 16-17)

Using the figure 1 and data given below answer the following questions.

Q1) Write the element stiffness matrices.

Q2) Carry out the assembly of the element matrices to form the structure stiffness matrix. Apply the
boundary conditions and obtain the reduced structure stiffness matrix. Form the global load vector.

Q3) Solve for nodal displacements. Obtain the element stresses.

A three bar truss is shown in figure. The area of cross section of each element is 500 mm 2 and E =
210 GPa. Use N, mm units in your calculations.

Q4)What is transformation matrix. Obtain transformation matrix for frame element.

Q5) Obtain strain-displacement relationship in case of 3-D elasticity problems.

Q6) Explain plane stress and plane strain problems. Give examples. Obtain [D] matrices.

Using the figure 2 and data given below answer the following questions.

Q7) Obtain [k] matrix for the element. Its a plane stress case.

Q8)Obtain nodal displacements.

Q9)Calculate element strains and stresses

The triangular plate is fixed along one edge and is subjected to concentrated loads
at one of the nodes as shown in figure. Assume E = 70,000 Mpa, t = 10 mm and
Poissons ratio is 0.3.

Q10) What are shape functions. Write two properties of shape function.

Q11) What are isoparametric finite elements. Give examples. What are the
advantages of using isoparametric elements.

Q12)a)What is Jacobian explain. Illustrate the use of Jacobian in assembling the

stiffness matrix of a 4 noded quadrilateral element.

b) For a four noded rectangular element 1(0,0), 2(3,0), 3(3,2), 4(0,2), determine the
Jacobian matrix [J ] and strain-displacement matrix [B] at the centre of the
element.

Q13)Illustrate tetrahedron element. Explain volume coordinates.

Q14) Write strain displacement and stress-strain relation for axisymmetric problems

Q15)What are axisymmetric problems. Give examples with neat sketches.
