throatinflammation.
Topically,alchemillaisusedasanastringentforbleeding,toimprovewound
healing,forulcers,eczema,skinrashes,andasabathadditivefortreatinglower
abdominalailments.
Safety:
POSSIBLYSAFE...whenusedorallyandappropriately.Alchemillahasbeenused
formanyyearswithoutreportsofsignificanttoxicity(6,8,12).

Theapplicablepartsofalchemillaaretheabovegroundparts.Alchemillacontains
68%tannins(8),whichmightaccountforitsperceivedastringentactivity(6).An
aqueousextractofAlchemillaxanthochlorademonstrateslipidperoxidationand

superoxideanionscavengingactivity(6).Flavonoidextractsinhibitproteolytic
enzymes,includingelastase,trypsin,andalphachymotrypsin.Thisproperty
suggestsalchemillamighthavearoleinprotectingconjunctiveandelastictissues(6).
AdverseReactions:
Rarely,alchemillacancauseliverdamage(8).
InteractionswithHerbs&Supplements:
TANNINCONTAININGHERBS:Somelaboratoryevidencesuggeststhatthe
abovegroundpartsofalchemillacontain6%to16%tannins(8,57998).Theoretically,

herbssuchasalchemilla,whichcontainhighpercentagesoftannins,mightcause
precipitationofconstituentsofotherherbs.
