Celebrated English actor Cary Elwes presents an evening of magic and


nostalgia from the set of the The Princess Bride. Elwes gives fans of the
heroic Westley, Princess Buttercup, and Prince Humperdinck a behind-the-
scenes look at life on and off the set of the 1987 classic film. After a
screening of the iconic movie, Elwes engages in a moderated discussion of
the classic scenes, and audiences are treated to never-before-shared secrets
and stories from the set, along with unbelievable antics sure to entertain.

This theatrical concert is about two boys from Queens who became the most
successful music duo of all time. The Simon & Garfunkel Story includes
timeless hits Mrs. Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Sound of
Silence, and many more from the duos celebrated six albums before
disbanding at the height of their career. The show takes the best of Simon &
Garfunkels songs and mixes them with powerful images of 1960s America,
relaying the atmosphere in which the artists created their music.

Brasil Guitar Duo is the classical/world music collaboration of guitarists Joo


Luiz and Douglas Lora. The duo is expanding the repertoire for two guitars
around the world, appearing in diverse, nontraditional spaces with a broad
program pairing classical guitar duos from Bach, Scarlatti, and Debussy with
traditional Brazilian dance like choro, samba, maxixe, and baio. Classical
Guitar magazine praises the duos maturity of musicianship and technical
virtuosity.

Grammy Award-winning Mexican-American artist Lila Downs has an


unforgettable voice, innovative approach to music, and poignant storytelling
ability that transcends language and cultural barriers. One of the worlds

pop, Mexican, and indigenous sounds informed from her upbringing in both
Minnesota and Oaxaca, Mexico. Bridging traditions, her musical mlange

This multimedia concert gives kids and adults a crash course in the blues.
Alumni of Strathmores Artist in Residence program, led by celebrated local
jazz singer Rochelle Rice, foster an appreciation for the iconic artists,
rhythms, and history of this quintessentially American music. Musicians
combine powerful stage presence and compelling musicality to introduce the
roots of the blues in a fun, educational style, as they run up and down the
blues scale, exploring a linear evolution of the genre and the legacy of icons
such as Muddy Waters, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and B.B. King.

Victor Provost is widely regarded as one of the worlds leading voices on the
unique steel pan (or steel drum). He has meticulously developed a reputation
as a dazzling soloist, crafting an improvisational voice and style to be
reckoned with. With a strong foundation in bebop, a contemporary
sensibility, and deep roots in Caribbean music, he works in countless genres
and musical styles. Named Jazz Percussionist of the Year by Washington
City Paper five years running, this local treasure tours with NEA Jazz Master
Paquito DRivera and is also a member of the Grammy Award-winning Afro
Bop Alliance.

This culturally and sonically rich lineup pays homage to traditional Jewish
music from around the world. World music singer Yasmin Levy, born in
Jerusalem, is the worlds leading exponent of Ladino songJudeo-Spanish
with strong ties to Sephardic culturethough she also sings contemporary
Spanish, often adding flamenco, Turkish, and Persian flair to her
interpretations. The Grammy-winning Klezmatics are superstars of the
klezmer world, erupting out of New York Citys East Village in 1986 and
revitalizing the genre with their wild, spiritual, provocative, reflective, and
ecstatically danceable music.

Black Violin is a fresh, fun mix of classical, hip-hop, rock, and R&B featuring
classically-trained violin duo Kevin Kev Marcus Sylvester and Wilner Wil
B. Baptiste. Full of funky musical surprises, the show is a whole new way to
experience the sound of the violin in all its iterations. At home on the worlds
classical stages as well as festivals like Bonnaroo and SXSW, Black Violin
offers an amazingly versatile program of groundbreaking compositions.
Individually and together, Black Violin has collaborated with the likes of P.
Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin, and The

If the French Quarter is the musical heart of New Orleans, then Preservation
Hall is its heartbeat. This concert showcases the heart and soul of the South,
combining the long-time house performers from a venerable concert hall,
The Soul Queen of New Orleans, Grammy winner Irma Thomas, and
American treasures, the Blind Boys of Alabama. Touring together for the first
time, they treat audiences to an afternoon filled with musical collaborations

This Renaissance ensemble sheds light on the cultural accomplishments of


women in 17th century Europe through this concert of works by Leonora
Duarte, the only known woman of the era to write music for viola de gamba
(or viols), a European bowed string instrument. Modern day champions of
early music and instruments, Sonnambula has performed at The Metropolitan
Museum of Art, been a featured ensemble at the Amherst and Boston Early
Music Festivals, and has presented concerts at The Frick Collection, Alice
Tully Hall, Columbia University, and The Museum of Biblical Art in New York.

An ethno-chaos quartet from Kiev, DakhaBrakha creates a world of


unexpected new music, bending genres, and reflecting fundamental
elements of sound and soul. DakhaBrakhas powerful and unique
compositions are performed with authenticity and dramatic flair, creating a
live show full of surprises with otherworldly four-part harmonies, propulsive
rhythms, and soundscapes featuring eclectic instrumentation from around
the globe. The groups aesthetic is rooted in Ukrainian culture and folklore,
but they borrow sounds from traditional Indian, Arabic, Australian, African,
and Russian music.

Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967, becoming the queen of
rock n roll. Her unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion, made her a
must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Fueled by such
unforgettable songs as Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart,
Mercedes Benz, Cry Baby, and Summertime, this electrifying show is a
raucous celebration of Joplin and her biggest musical influencesicons like
Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smithin a
show that went straight to Broadway following its run at D.C.s Arena Stage.

A formidable force in the world of chamber music, this quintet has been
heralded as the Kings of Brass and the worlds most famous brass group
(Ottawa Citizen). Canadian Brass mass appeal comes from their impeccable

a library of over 600 original arrangements that range from Baroque to
Dixieland.

Though its namesake has shuttered, The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra
(BCJO), a 17-piece big band, carries the legacy of the renowned D.C. club,
simultaneously embracing and challenging the treasured traditions of big
band repertoire. Featuring some of D.C.s best musicians, BCJO performs a
holiday concert that includes classics from Ellington, Basie, and Strayhorn.
Practically a Strathmore tradition, the band recorded its holiday album, A
Bohemian Christmas, in the Mansion.

This family-friendly holiday mash-up has quickly become a favorite of


Strathmore audiences, reimagining Tchaikovskys classic score through
explosive hip-hop choreography. A dozen all-star dancers, on-stage DJ, and
an electric violinist bring the traditional Nutcracker story to life in
contemporary New York City, with a rap into from guest emcee Kurtis Blow,
who charted the first rap gold record with The Breaks in 1980. The New
York Times calls The Hip Hop Nutcracker, A generous dose of contemporary

Emerging as the voice of a new generation in klezmer music, Ukrainian-


Jewish singer-songwriter Zhenya Lopatnik mines European Jewish culture to
create a fresh, vibrant take on modern Yiddish tradition. A recent immigrant
to New York City, the Kharkiv, Ukraine native discovered klezmer in her mid-
20sand shes made up for lost time by releasing three original albums,
fronting the Kharkov Klezmer Band, composing, teaching, and launching
festivals to boost the popularity of the genre worldwide.

Joel Fan is celebrated for his exuberant virtuosity and repertoire that

satisfying piano performances Ive heard. His latest album, Dances for Piano
and Orchestra, focuses on the intersection of music and dance, with rarely-

Gottschalk, plus the world premiere recording of Charles Cadmans Dark
Dancers of the Mardi Gras.

An internationally acclaimed French oboist, Stankiewicz was named principal


oboe of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2015 and became a Professor of
Oboe at the Royal College of Music the same year. At only 25 years old, this
young artist has been praised for his astounding technique, rich sound, and
mature artistry (ResMusica). He is also a founding member of the
experimental music collective WARN!NG, whose contemporary compositions
have been featured in installations at the Zenith de Paris, Gat Lyrique,
Printemps des Arts of Monaco, and several broadcasts on France Musique.

of spoken-word, West has created several albums in collaboration with artists
like Prince and Andr 3000 of Outkast. Inspired by the innate musicality of
Wests words, this performance brings together big band jazz, Latin music,

Steven Page, a founder and former front man of Barenaked Ladies, joins
Torontos highly inventive Art of Time Ensemble in an evening of seminal
songs by Randy Newman, Radiohead, Elvis Costello, Barenaked Ladies,
Leonard Cohen, Page himself, and others. These gems are reimagined and
reinvented by some of the greatest minds in classical, pop, and jazz, and
delivered by a defining voice in contemporary rock, as Page performs
chamber music for a modern age in his distinctive tenor, backed by the
impeccable musicianship of Art of Time Ensemble.

Bathgate, who has been described as an eloquent new music interpreter


(The New York Times) and a glorious cellist (The Washington Post),
performs Bach Unwound. Commissioned by Bathgate and written by
composer-collective Sleeping Giant, Bach Unwound features the performance
of a six-movement suite for solo cello based on movements from Bachs
original cello suites. In addition to her solo work, Bathgate is a member of
acclaimed sextet Bang on a Can All-Stars, the chamber music group HOWL,
the duo TwoSense with pianist Lisa Moore, and percussive quintet Bonjour.
Bathgate will lead a post-show talk following the performance.

Idan Raichel shifts his focus to the basic essence of his songs with the solo
piano concert, Idan Raichel: Piano Songs. Raichel presents his melodies,

were originally written at home or in the studio. This intimate, inspiring show
allows Raichel to demonstrate his gifts as a singer-songwriter and endearing

The Chieftains have been synonymous with the finest Irish music for over 55
years. Formed in 1962 and led by founding member Paddy Moloney, the

One of Spains most acclaimed and innovative flamenco singers, Diego el


Cigala has been called the Sinatra of flamenco (Billboard). He began his
career singing for dancers in Spain at the invitation of well-known artists
such as Cristbal Reyes and Mario Maya, then rose to international fame in
2003 after releasing Lagrimas Negras, a collaboration with venerable Cuban
pianist Bebo Valds. El Cigala seamlessly melds the traditional sounds of his
Spanish gitano heritage with the intoxicating rhythms and melodies of salsa.
On his latest album, Indestructible, el Cigala turns to the world of salsa,
embracing classic material with a power-packed band in an album Billboard
declares the salsa album of the year.

Million Dollar Quartet is the Tony-nominated smash hit Broadway musical


inspired by the true story of the recording session that brought together rock
n roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins for
the first and only time. The show tells the story of the legendary day in 1956
that the four music stars dropped by Sun Records studio in Memphis. Rock
n roll fans will love how the performance brings that magical recording

This Charleston-based quintet performs timeless music rooted in the Gullah


traditions of coastal South Carolina. The bands name loosely translates to
work it or get down in the Gullah language. Their contemporary twist on
traditional Gullah music features gospel vocals, jazz trumpet solos, and a
R&B rhythm sectioninnovating a genre with a deep connection to West
African and Creole influences. Up front is lowcountry vocalist Quiana Parler,
of American Idol fame. Shes accompanied by South Carolina natives Quentin

In this program centered around the music of Leonard Bernstein, Brown
highlights music by iconic American composers who were all friends and
colleagues, played each others music, and had lifelong associations with
each other. Many of the works relate to one another and were written in
honor of each other.

performance art. Flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons, giant kites, and
an enormous snow globe captivate in this circus-style adventure that tells
the story of two siblings journeying through a surreal land of air,
transforming the ordinary into objects of uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in
the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti become the night sky,
and an enormous canopy of hovering silk forever alters the future of this
sibling pair.
