awayyouarefromtheblast,sincethatwilldeterminewhenthefalloutarrives,therearesomegeneralrulesto
follow.

Ifyouareimmediatelynexttoorinasolidshelterwhenthebombgoesoff,staythereuntiltherescuerscometo
evacuateyoutolessradioactivevistas.

Ifyouaren'talreadyinabombshelter,butknowagoodshelterisaboutfiveminutesawaymaybealarge
apartmentbuildingwithabasementthatyoucanseeafewblocksawayhiscalculationssuggesthoofingitover
therequicklyandstayinginplace.

Butifthenice,thickwalledbuildingwouldtakeabout15minutestraveltime,it'sbettertoholeupintheflimsy
shelterforawhilebutyoushouldprobablyleaveforabettershelterafterroughlyanhour(andmaybepickup
somebeersandsodasontheway:Astudyinthe'50sfoundtheytastefineafterablast).

Thisisbecausesomeofthemostintensefalloutradiationhassubsidedbythen,thoughyoustillwanttoreduce
yourexposure.
