General Approach
The condition assessment of critical cables is be-
coming increasingly important in electric net-
works. Applying preventive diagnostics instead of
corrective actions helps to avoid outages and their
consequences and improve cost efficiency
through condition based maintenance. LIRA Port-
able is a unique cable condition assessment sys-
tem that enables the grid operator to act before
serious failures happen.

The LIRA Technology

LIRA (Line Resonance Analysis) is a non-

destructive test method with a very short mea-
suring time for all kind of electrical cables ranging
from less than 50m to several hundred km. It is
sensitive to small impedance changes in the insu-
lation material. This allows an early indication of
the critical areas, detection and localization of The LIRA Portable measuring device is like a suitcase weighing
less than 10 kg
single and multiple faults/damages/failures and
their severity. LIRA provides information about
the local and global degradation of cables, caused
by water trees, aging, mechanical stress and harsh
environment.
