According to Renaissance belief, the ghost could not speak until spoken to. Horatio, a scholar,

is chosen to address the ghost because of his knowledge of Latin (he can perform an exorcism).

2. What do Ghostly apparitions usually portend, according to these witnesses?

To the witnesses: An omen of unrest in the state of Denmark.

To others:

1. An omen of Denmarks destructions
