IDEAS
My music video will be filmed outdoors around flowers, trees and water. The beginning will be
filmed in an industrial location and will have sound effects of cars and sirens and shouting. The main
character will slowly walk and sit down on the floor. I will edit this clip to look very dark and
contrasted. The character will have no makeup on and will wear dark clothes. There is then a
moment of silence in the song and the titles will appear on screen before dissolving into a shot of
colourful flowers. The character in these colourful shots will be the same, but instead she will be
wearing white and pastel colours with sparkly makeup and be happy. There will be close up shots of
flowers and butterflies and all set in countryside settings. This will contrast with the opening shot in
a very industrial location. I will use a large variety of shots and camera movements; I will edit the
video to the beat of the song and will slow sections down so that they play in slow motion. I will use
devices such as split screens in the editing to show the character looking at flowers and such. The
song fades out at the end and the colourful outdoorsy setting will fade into the industrial location of
the opening shot. I think that it would be a good idea to do a music video, as I would like to focus on
the aesthetic of the video.

My second idea will be based around the main character singing to the camera. This will be a close
up and then it will cut to a longer shot showing more people singing to the camera. The video will
cut between the shots of people singing and shots of people dancing. It will be very upbeat and set
in a variety of locations. The actors will be lip syncing and dancing in a busy town centre, a
classroom, a shop and a restaurant.

To decide between these two ideas, I sent out a survey to reveal what the audience thought the best
idea was.

CONTENT OUTLINE
My product is a music video for the song Where Is My Mind by The Pixies.

The video is based around the one main character. It will show her miserable and imagining a
happier life. The video opens in a busy town centre. There are offices and tower blocks at the edge
of the screen. The character walks into the wide establishing shot and is dressed all in black. They
walk slowly as they do not have anywhere to go. They stop and look around before sitting down in
an underpass. They take a lighter out of their pocket and hold it in front of them; looking at the
flame. During editing, I will make this scene darker and more contrasted. After the close up of the
flame there is a pause in the song. The screen will go black before the titles appear on screen.
Through the title, you will be able to see a video of flowers underneath. As the song picks up again
the titles will fade just to show the video that is underneath. There will be close up and extreme
close ups of flowers until the singing begins. When it does I will cut to the main character again. This
time they will be wearing white and pale colours. It will be set in a field and she will look happy.
There will be shots of flowers and bees intercut with shots of the character walking through long
grass and lying on the ground. I will use split screens to show flowers at the same time as her looking
at them. During the slower parts of the song I will use slow motion as I think it will match the song. I
will place candles around the actress when she is lying down. There will also be shots set in a
swimming pool, where she will be floating looking content and happy. As the song fades out at the
end, she will blow out a candle. I will overlap a shot of her blowing out the flame from the lighter in
the underpass. I will cut to the same setting and style as the opening scene to show her looking
miserable in the town centre. After putting the lighter away she looks at the camera sadly and puts
her hood up and walks away from the camera. The shot will fade to black.

TARGET AUDIENCE
I held a focus group to determine the target audience of my music video. The respondents said

It would appeal to people aged 14-26

As the target audience is young (teenage-twentys) the socio-economic group I will target most will
be group E as the majority of people in this age range are students, fitting into group E.

It would appeal more to females more because of the colours and the flowers

The target audience would also be similar to the target audience of similar artists. The genre of
alternative commonly attracts a youthful audience. The target audience for my video will also be the
same as the target audience for the genre of alternative rock. This audience is typically aged
between 16 and 30 and are both male and female. The audience for this genre come from all classes
but working class is most common. Other artists in this genre such as Radiohead and the Foo
Fighters have this target audience so it would make sense if I had a similar target audience as the
song is of the same genre. Much of the audience of this genre likes to connect with their favourite
artists online as well as at concerts. As the audience for these bands connect with the artist online,
this is where my music video shall be shown. I will upload it to YouTube as this is where it is most
likely to be seen by the target audience. The audience of this genre read magazines such as Kerrang!
and NME to keep up to date. Ideally it would be good to have my music video on these sites as the
site audience would already be the specific audience I am targeting.

My music video will be aimed at people aged 15-30. This is quite a large age range; however, I
believe it could appeal to a large range of people so I think this is an appropriate target age. The
socio-economic group will be groups D and E because a large percent of my audience would be
students-fitting in to group E; while others will likely have low paying jobs as they are still young.

MARKET COMPETITORS
The Pixies fit into the alternative rock genre. This sub-genre of rock emerged from independent
music in the 1980s and gained wide popularity in the 1990s. This song was released in 1988 on their
debut album Surfer Rosa. According to a poll by Australian radio station Triple J it was voted 29th on
the Hottest 100 of All Time. It is one of their most popular songs despite never being released as a
single. As it was never released as a single it did not chart. The album however, spent 60 weeks in
the UK Indie Album Chart after being released and peaked at number 2. After being featured in Fight
Club in 1999 it gained wider popularity. Since then it has used in countless adverts, films and TV
shows. The song has 16.5 million views on YouTube. Only a few of their songs reached the Official
Top 40 Chart, but due to being featured in films and TV shows and being cited as influences to huge
artists they are still well known. Artists such as Nirvana and Radiohead are competitors as they also
fit into this sub-genre and so would have the same audience so would be direct competition. Both of
these bands are more popular so they would be big competition. Eight of Nirvanas singles reached
the UK chart, twelve Radiohead singles reached the UK chart while only two Pixies singles charted in
the UK. Where Is My Mind however, did not ever chart in the UK as it was not released as a single
but gained popularity and has become one of the
bands signature songs. As a music video was never
officially released for the song. So I will make a
music video for the internationally known song. It
would make my video unique, as there is not an
original to compare it to. Radioheads Creep and
Nirvanas Smells Like Teen Spirit music videos focus
on the band playing the song, whereas my music
video will focus on the visual style of the video.
This will generate interest in my music video as it is
different to many music videos in the same genre.

PERSONNAL REQUIREMENTS
For my production I will have an understudy incase my actress drops out. I will make sure that the
understudy understands the role. I will drive to the locations to film and will pick up my actor on the
way. This means that I will need about 30 of petrol to cover travel expenses. I will bring my own
lunch from home and will require my actor to bring a packed lunch. I will only be filming all day once
so this will be the only filming day that lunch will be required. As I am using props I will need to buy
candles and flowers.

CAST AND CREW

Camera Operator/Editor/Director Charlotte Pooley 07583107457
Actress Emily Manning 07894850246
Understudy Charlotte Kelly 07739398640

I chose my actor as I believe she is part of the target audience so the audience will relate to her
more than someone who was much older or younger. She also has feminine features which is what I
pictured when coming up with the idea.
