Job Title: Special Education Teaching Specialist

Position Function: To provide teachers necessary staff development and support that will
enable them to implement state standards, as required by IDEA 04, so that (1) a greater
percentage of special education students will be integrated into the general education classroom
80% of the time, (2) all SPED students will have access to the general education curriculum, and
(3) all special education students will increase proficiency on state math and reading
assessments.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

o Research interventions and best practices in order to train, model and coach staff
regarding specialized instruction for exceptional children.
o Plan, develop, facilitate, and oversee the implementation of professional growth of
special education staff under the guidance of the special education administrative team.
o Consult and collaborate with general education curriculum specialists and instructional
coaches to support successful intensive practices and specialized instruction.
o Support special education professional staff in Standards Based Individualized Education
Plan processes under the supervision of administrative staff.
o Serve as an instructional leader for special education services.

Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by Supervisor

Equipment: The employee must demonstrate the ability to use basic office equipment such as
computers, scanners, copiers, and fax machine. Must always comply with USD 259s guidelines
for equipment use.

Travel: Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.

o Excellent oral and written communication skills


o Excellent personal relationship skills
o Ability to organize, communicates effectively, make decisions, work independently and as
a member of the Teaching Specialist team.
o Basic computer proficiency and the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word and Outlook
which will be determined and validated by testing
o Use of good judgment to make decisions on recurring assignments
o Ability to perform a variety of tasks, meet deadlines, and work in a calm and efficient
manner
o Ability to work with little or no supervision
o Ability to communicate effectively with a supervisor when their discretion is needed
o Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality
o Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance

Interrelations: Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors. Will
be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to
day tasks. Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations
with tact and diplomacy. Must exhibit a professional manner and maintain a positive attitude with
all customers and colleagues.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

o In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all
assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless
the employee has received approved leave.
o Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employees
supervisor or building administrator.
o All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive
image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position.

Qualification Profile

o Kansas Special Education Teaching License


o Masters degree preferred
o History of high performance as a master teacher and IEP manager
