PROJECT
SEMESTER II, SESSION 2016/7

A. The site investigation of the Slope Remedial Work Project was carried out accordance
to the British Standard Code of Practice, BS 5930:1981 to explore the subsurface
condition of the failure slope. A total of 5 boreholes was drilled on site where BH3,
BH4 and BH5 are located on the Cross Section A-A.

The Location Plan, Survey Plan and Cross Section of A-A are given in Figure 1 and
Figure 2.

B. The boreholes location are shown in Figure 3.

The Borelogs of BH3, BH4 and BH5 present the results of the site investigation works.

The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was conducted to determine the natural bearing
resistance of the subsoil.

C. The groundwater level at location was monitored by installing two (2) nos. of standpipe
namely WSP1 and WSP2 as tabulated in Table 2 and Table 3.

Note:
Water Head at the WSP locations are calculated from the assumed ground level of 0.00mRL as the Reduce
level of these locations are not available.

D. Produce the soil profile of the slope for Cross-section A-A. The profile shall include the
followings:

1. Depth of each soil layer

2. Name of each soil layer
3. The shear strength values (total strength and effective strength) of angle of friction,
, cohesive strength, c and unit weight, for each layer
4. Piezometric line
E. The selected remedial work for the failure slope is by constructing a retaining wall at
the toe of the slope.

1. Find the best location for the constructing the retaining wall if the potential slip
surface failure is as shown in Figure 4. Explain why?

Figure 4: The potential slip surface failure

F. Acting as the geotechnical engineer for the site, you have to carry out the geotechnical
analysis for designing the retaining wall.

1. Calculate the all pressures distribution acting on the wall

2. Determine all forces acting on the retaining wall
3. Check the Factor of Safety for against (i) overturning, (ii) sliding along the base
and (iii) bearing capacity failure.

Draw the final detail of the designed retaining wall (i.e. the geometry of the wall, the
pressure distribution, as well as the forces acting on the wall, and the calculation of the
analysis) as shown in APPENDIX D (Figure 5: Example).
