The value of Heat of displacement

between copper and magnesium is higher
than the Heat of displacement copper with
zinc. Design an experiment to prove the
above statement.
Problem Statement: The value of Heat of displacement between copper and magnesium is higher than the
Heat of displacement copper with zinc?
Variables
Manipulated: Type of metal which displace Copper
Responding : Heat of displacement/Temperature change
Fixed : Volume and concentration of copper (II) sulphate
Materials :Magnesium, Zinc, 1moldm-3copper (II) sulphate
Apparatus :250ml Beaker, Thermometer 0 1000C , 50ml , Measuring cylinder
Procedure :
1. 50cm3(or any other relevant volume) of 1 mol dm-3copper (II) sulphate solution is poured into a polystyrene
cup.
2. The initial temp. of the copper (II) sulphate solution is measured using a thermometer.
3. 4g (or appropriate mass) of magnesium powder which is in excess is poured into a polystyrene cup
containing copper (II) sulphate solution.
4. The mixture in the polystyrene cup is stirred using the thermometer.
5. The maximum temperature is recorded.
6. The Experiment is repeated by replacing 4g of magnesium powder with 4g of zinc powder.

2. At the moment the price of petrol is increasing gradually. Studies have been done to find
substitutes for petrol as a fuel You are given methanol, ethanol, propan-1-ol and butan-1-ol.
You are required to design an experiment to find which is a better fuel

Problem Statement : Does the alcohol with a higher number of carbon atoms per molecule alcohol
have a higher heat of combustion?
Hypothesis: The higher the number of carbon atoms per molecule alcohol the higher is the heat of
combustion.
Manipulated: Different Types of alcohol
Responding Heat of combustion
Fixed : Volume of water , copper tin.
Apparatus : Copper tin ,Tripod stand, Retort stand with clamp , Pipe-Clay triangle, Thermometer 0
1000C, Measuring cylinder 100 cm3 , Wind Shield, wooden block and lamp.
Procedure 1. 200 cm3 of water is measured using a measuring cylinder and then is poured into a copper tin.
2. The copper tin is placed on the tripod stand as shown in the diagram.
3.The initial Temperature of the water is recorded in the table below.
4 A lamp is filled with methanol.
5. The lamp together with the wick is weighed and the weight is recorded in the table below.
6. A wind shield is placed to protect the apparatus from air flow/wind disturbances.
7. The lamp is immediately placed below the copper tin as shown in the diagram and the wick is ignited.
7. The water in the tin is stirred continuously with thermometer during heating until the temperature of
water increases by 300C.
8.The flame is extinguished and the maximum temperature of the water is recorded.
9. The lamp is immediately and the weight is recorded in the table below.
10. Steps 1 to 9 is repeated using ethanol, propan-1-ol and butan-1-ol.
