Unit 8 Part Stacks Using Profile Unit 8 PART STACKS USING PROFILE Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to : * Calculate part stacks using a profile of a surface with bilateral tolerances * Calculate part stacks using a profile of a surface with unilateral tolerances Explanation Whenever cified as a related feature, control, its tolerance ZI determines the extreme surlace boundary (ESB) conditions for the true profile (TPR). Therefore profile as related feature control is used in the stack. See figure 8-T- When a profile control with a bilateral tolerance zone is specified: + Enter half the tolerance value in the left column + Enter half the tolerance value in the right column The left 0 Tegal ‘When profile is used as a related feature control, basic dimensions are used to locate the "true profile” to the datums. It is easy to use basic dimensions in a stack. First, the sign (+ of -) for the basic dimension is determined by the direction of the distance. Then, the basic dimension value is entered in both columns and a zero is shown in the tolerance column. See line B in the stack example on page 8-5. The full profile tolerance value is entered into one stack column and "zero" is entered into the other stack column. The following explains how to determine which column the tolerance value is entered. Sketch a line on the stack drawing that represents the unilateral tolerance zone (extreme surface boundary). This line shows the direction the extreme surface boundary exists from the true profile. The stack distance is the distance between the extreme surface boundary and the true profile. The direction of the distance is estab- lished just like any other stack distance— by using the stack indicator. See the stack on page 8-5 for an example. The dimensions locating the true profile establish the extreme conditions for the surface. When profile is specified as a related feature control, it determines the extreme surface boundary condi- tions for the true profile and is used in the stack. For a profile control with a bilateral tolerance zone, enter half the tolerance value in the left column (always positive) and the other half in the right column (always negative) on the stack form, Basic dimensions are entered on the stack form as follows: First, the sign (+ or -) is determined by the direction of the distance. Then, the basic dimension value is entered in both columns and a zero is shown in the tolerance column. For a profile with a unilateral tolerance zone, enter the full tolerance value in one column and place a zero in the other column. The stack indicator is used to determine the sign and which column the profile tolerance is entered. 8-12
