Do you know what a UMPT is? Members:4517 Posts:1557

Do you know how to use a UMPT?

Do you know how many members the UMPT family has?

This post brings you to the world of UMPT boards.

What is a UMPT?

The universal main processing and transmission unit (UMPT) can serve as a main control board working in any
mode.

A UMPT board can be configured in either a BBU3900 or a BBU3910.

For details, see section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the functions and working principle of a UMPT board?

The UMPT performs the following functions:

Manages configurations and devices, monitors performance, and processes signaling.

Provides the USB port, transmission port, and interconnection port to achieve BBU maintenance on the local maintenance terminal
(LMT), signal transmission, and BBU interconnection.

The working principle of the UMPT is shown in the following figure.

For details, see section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the types of UMPT boards?

From SRAN9.0 onwards, UMPT boards are classified into the following types:

l UMPTa series boards: UMPTa1, UMPTa2, and UMPTa6

l UMPTb series boards: UMPTb1 and UMPTb2

UMPTa series boards are used since RAN14.0/eRAN3.0, and UMPTb series boards are used since
SRAN8.0/GBSS15.0/RAN15.0/eRAN6.0. As required by UMTS mode, the UMPTb1 board can be used since
RAN14.0 V200R014C00SPC370.

All UMPT boards have the same appearance: On the upper left of a UMPT panel, there is a silkscreen "UMPT".
On the lower left of a UMPT panel, there is a label indicating the type of a UMPT board.

For details, see section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description.

What modes are supported by UMPT boards?

Board Type Applicable Mode

UMPTa1, UMPTa2, and UMPTb1 l GSM single mode

l UMTS single mode

l LTE FDD single mode

l Multiple modes (including any mode)

UMPTb2 l GSM single mode

l UMTS single mode

l LTE FDD single mode

l LTE TDD single mode

l Multiple modes (including any mode)

UMPTa6 l LTE FDD single mode

l LTE TDD single mode

For details, see section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the application scenarios of those UMPT boards?

Now, the following table describes the application scenarios of UMPT boards from the perspective of their
working modes. ^_^

Working Mode Configuration Principle

GSM UMPT boards can be used in eGBTSs since SRAN8.0/GBSS15.0.

l The UMPTb1 is recommended.

l If the eGBTS requires a GPS reference clock, a USCU is preferentially configured or a

UMPTb2 can be configured alternatively.

UMTS 1. In SRAN7.0/RAN14.0, the UMPTa1 is recommended. From SRAN8.0/RAN15.0

onwards, the UMPTb1 is recommended.

A UMPTa1 or UMPTb1 must be configured in the following scenarios:

l The base station needs to support the IPsec and PKI features.

l The signaling processing capability exceeds 170 CNBAP/s.

l There is a need for UMTS-to-LTE evolution.

2. When a site has been configured with a UMPTa2 and a NodeB needs to be added at
the site, the existing UMPTa2 can be used as the main control board of the newly added
NodeB.

3. If the site requires a GPS reference clock, a USCU is preferentially configured or a

UMPTb2 can be configured alternatively.

LTE FDD 1. In SRAN7.0/eRAN3.0, the UMPTa2 is recommended. From SRAN8.0/eRAN6.0

onwards, the UMPTb1 is recommended.

A UMPTa2 or UMPTb1 must be configured in the following scenarios:

[Base Station Encyclopedia] UMPT Boards for BBUs (BBU... http://forum.huawei.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid...

l The signaling capability of the main control board exceeds 60000 BHCA.

l The maximum number of UEs in RRC connected mode exceeds 5400.

2. When a site has been configured with a UMPTa1 and an LTE FDD base station needs
to be added at the site, the existing UMPTa1 can be used as the main control board of
the newly added LTE FDD base station.

3. When a site requires a GPS reference clock, a UMPTa6 or UMPTb2 can be

configured.

LTE TDD 1. In eRAN3.0/eRAN3.1, a UMPTa6 is configured by default. From eRAN6.0 onwards, a

UMPTb2 is preferentially configured. At a SoftBank site using any software version, a
UMPTa6 is preferentially configured.

2. If BBUs need to be interconnected with USUs, a UMPTa6 or UMPTb2 is required.

3. When a base station needs to be converted to support multiple modes including LTE
TDD, a UMPTb2 must be configured. (SoftBank still uses a UMPTa6.)

4. When the maximum number of UEs in RRC connected mode exceeds 5400 at a site,
a UMPTa6 or UMPTb2 must be configured.

Multiple modes 1. From SRAN8.0 onwards, a UMPTb1 is preferentially configured in co-MPT multimode
scenarios.

2. When a base station has been configured with a UMPTa1 or UMPTa2 and needs to
be converted to a multimode base station, the existing UMPTa1 or UMPTa2 can still be
used.

3. When each mode in a multimode base station needs to meet the preceding
requirements for the GSM, UMTS, LTE FDD, and LTE TDD modes, a UMPTb1 is
required.

4. When a base station requires a GPS reference clock, a UMPTb2 can be configured.

For details, see section "BBU Board Configuration" in 3900 Series Base Station Configuration Principle (Global).

How to determine the working mode of a UMPT?

Indicators R0, R1, and R2 on the UMPT panel are used to determine the working mode of the UMPT board.

For details, see section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description.

The UMPT board has a CI port which does not exist on other main control boards. What is this port used
for?

UMPT boards can be used to achieve BBU interconnection through UCIU+UMPT or UMPT+UMPT. The CI port
is used to connect the UCIU or UMPT in the other BBU.

For details, see section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description and section "Inter-BBU Signal Cable
Connections" of chapter "Cable Connections" in 3900 Series Base Station Cables.

How is the UMPT board connected to a computer to implement local BBU maintenance?

The USB port on a UMPT is used for connecting the UMPT to a computer.

[Base Station Encyclopedia] UMPT Boards for BBUs (BBU... http://forum.huawei.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid...

To connect a UMPT to a computer, do as follows: Connect the USB connector at one end of the USB-to-Ethernet
cable to the USB port on the UMPT, and connect the Ethernet connector of at the other end of the cable to the
computer.

For details, see the following contents:

l Section "UMPT" in BBU Hardware Description

l Section "Adapter Used for Local Maintenance" of chapter "Cable Connections" in 3900 Series Base Station Cables

l Section "Logging In to the LMT and Disabling the DHCP Function" in 3900 Series Base Station Commissioning
Guide

Can a UMPT be used as a spare part to replace a WMPT or LMPT?

No, a UMPT cannot be used to replace a WMPT or LMPT.

If a WMPT or LMPT needs to be replaced by a UMPT, software configurations need to be modified after
hardware replacement is complete.

In terms of hardware, the operations of replacing a WMPT with a UMPT are the same as those of replacing a
WMPT with a new WMPT. For details, see section "Replacing the WMPT" in the corresponding site maintenance
guide. For details about the configuration modification, see RAN Reconfiguration Guide and eRAN
Reconfiguration Guide.
