andSydney,thishassincebeenexpandedtocoverallmajorAustraliancitiesandmanyholidaydestinations.The
VirginBluenamewastheresultofanopencompetitionitwasaplayonthepredominantlyredliveryandthe
Australianslangtraditionofcallingaredheadedmale'Blue'or'Bluey'.[8]

ThetimingofVirginBlue'sentryintotheAustralianmarketwasfortunate
asitwasabletofillthevacuumcreatedbythefailureofAnsettAustraliain
September2001.Ansett'sfailureallowedVirgintogrowrapidlytobecome
Australia'sseconddomesticcarrier,ratherthanstayingjustacutprice
alternativetotheestablishedplayers.ItalsogaveVirginaccesstoterminal
spacewithoutwhichgrowthwouldhavebeensignificantlylimited.Delays
innegotiatingaccesstotheformerAnsettterminalatSydneyAirport
however,forcedVirgintouseitsoriginalterminalthereacollectionof

VirginBluepreviouslyusedafamiliarformulapioneeredbyairlinessuch
asSouthwestAirlinesandRyanairofeliminatingcostssuchasincludedin
flightmealsandprintedticketsinfavourofsellingfoodonboardandusing
telephoneandinternetbookingsystems.Italsocutcostsinthepastby
limitingthenumberofairportsservicedandbyoperatingonetypeof
aircraft,theBoeing737.Thisstrategychangedwiththeintroductionofa
secondtypeintothefleet.Theairlineordered20EmbraerEjets,inamix
ofsixE170sand14E190s.[10]Thesewereorderedspecificallysothatthe
Boeing737800intheoldVirgin airlinecouldreentertheSydneyCanberramarketthatitabandonedin
BlueredliveryatPerthAirportin 2004,andtoflytolesspopulousareas.[10][11]ThefirstE170arrivedin
2004 AustraliainSeptember2007andbytheendoftheyearthethreeoninitial
orderhadbeendelivered.Thesewereplacedonlimitedfrequencyservices
beforefullscaleoperationswerelaunchedon4February2008with

In2008,premiumeconomyclasswasintroducedthroughoutitsentirefleet.
Newseatingwasinstalledinthefirstthreerowsofthecabin.Thesecould
beconvertedfromthreeseatsineconomyconfigurationtotwoseatsfor
premiumeconomy.Thepremiumproductofferedprioritycheckin,larger
baggageallowance,loungeaccess,priorityboarding,increasedlegroom
andallinclusiveinflightentertainment,mealsandbeveragesonboard.
Theproductwasaimedatbusinessandcorporatecustomers.Theairline
beganchargingeconomyclasspassengersforcheckedbaggagein
September2008.
TheairlinefurtherannounceditsintentiontooperateAirbusA330aircraft

InDecember2010,VirginBlueenteredintoallianceswithEtihad
Airways[16]andAirNewZealand[17]forcodesharing,reciprocalloungeand

SkyTeam,oneofthetopthreealliancesintheworld,asVAustraliaandDelta

On20January2011,AirNewZealandannounceditwouldtakeashareholding
stakeofbetween10%and14.99%inVirginBlue.AirNewZealandchiefexecutiveRobFyfedescribedthe
investment"aspartofAirNewZealand'sstrategytodevelopscaleandreachinthisregion"butsaidtheairlinehad
nointentionofmakingafulltakeover.[22]

Inearly2006,VirginBlueannounceditsintentiontooperateuptosevenflightsaweektotheU.S.througheither
LosAngelesInternationalAirportorSanFranciscoInternationalAirport.Atthetime,onlyQantasandUnited
AirlinescompetedintheAustraliaUStranspacificmarket.Theairlinewasgivenpermissionfortenflightsaweek
totheU.S.byAustralianregulatorson24July2007.TheplanswereapprovedbyUSregulatorson15February
2008,duetothesigningofanopenskiesagreementbetweenAustraliaandtheUS.[23]Insteadofusingitsexisting
brand,VirginBluelaunchedafullyownedsubsidiarywithaseparateAirOperator'sCertificate,namedVAustralia
astheresultofapublicnamingcompetition,withafleetoffivespecificallybranded777300ERs.

TheairlinelaunchedflightsbetweenSydneyandLosAngelesin2009,followedbyflightsfromMelbourneand
BrisbanesinceobtainingpermissiontooperateanunlimitednumberofflightsbetweenAustraliaandtheU.S.by
theAustralianInternationalAirServicesCommission.[24]VAustraliaalsoappliedtotheUnitedStatesDepartment
ofTransportationtooperateservicestoSanFrancisco,Seattle,LasVegas,andNewYork,buttheseplansnever

ReorganisationandrebrandingintoVirginAustralia(2011present)

On7May2010,BrettGodfreyofficiallysteppeddownasVirginBlueCEO
aftersteeringthecompanythroughitsfirsttenyears.[25]JohnBorghetti,
formerQantasexecutivegeneralmanager,tookoverasthenewChief
Executive.[26]FollowingBorghetti'sarrivalasCEO,anumberofkey
QantasstaffmovedtoVirginBluewhilekeyVirginBluestaffdepartedthe
airline.[27]causingmuchspeculationregardingaforthcomingrebrandor
reorganisationoftheairline.[28]InFebruary2011,therebrandwas
confirmedwhentheairlineannouncedthattheword'Blue'wouldbe
droppedfromitsnameaspartofacampaigntoattractmorebusiness AirbusA330CableBeacharrivesat
travellersawayfromrivalQantas.Thiscameshortlyaftertheunveilingof SydneyAirportinthenewVirgin

newdomesticbusinessclass.Boeing737businessclassseatingwasalsorevealed,tobeintroducedonallof
Virgin'sjetaircraftbytheendof2011.[30]PacificBlueandVAustraliawerebothfoldedintothenewVirgin
Australiabrand,followinganagreementwithformerVirginAtlanticshareholderSingaporeAirlines,whichever
sincetheestablishmentofVirginBluein2000hadpreviouslyprohibiteduseoftheVirginbrandoutside

Earlyin2011itwasannouncedthatVirginBluehadsignedatenyeardealwithPerthbasedregionalairline
SkywestAirlines,forSkywesttooperateupto18turbopropaircraftleasedbyVirgin,inordertobettercompetein
eastcoastregionalmarketsservedbyQantasLinkandRegionalExpressAirlines.Theturbopropswould
supplementtheexistingEmbraerE190sandreplacetheE170s,whichwouldbephasedoutduetotheirbeing

InOctober2011,theAustralianCompetitionandConsumerCommission(ACCC)approvedaproposedcodeshare
alliancebetweenSingaporeAirlines(SIA)andVirginAustralia,subjecttootherregulatoryapprovalsinboth

On31May2016,ChineseaviationholdingcompanyHNAGroupagreedtopurchase13%ofVirginAustralia
HoldingsforA$159million,subjecttoauthorisationfromtheACCC,astakewhichHNAGroupultimately
intendstoincreaseto19.99%.[34]ThedealalsocreatedacodesharepartnershipbetweenVirginAustraliaand
ChineseairlinesinwhichHNAGroupholdsshares,onroutesbetweenAustraliaandChina.Virginintendedto

In2003amanwithadisabilityandhavingincompletequadriplegiawasremovedfromaVirginBlueflight
becausestaffthoughthewasdrunkoraterrorist.Hesubsequentlysettledalawsuitagainsttheairline.[99]
InOctober2005theairlinelostadiscriminationcaseovertheageofflightattendantstheyemployed.[100]
Eightformerflightattendantsagedover34previouslyemployedbythecollapsedAnsettAustraliahad
appliedforemploymentwithVirginBluebutnonehadgainedwork.[100]Theyclaimedtheywere
discriminatedagainstbecauseoftheirageandwoncompensationinMarch2006.[101]Theairline'sappeal
againstthisdecisionfailedandthecompanywasorderedtopaycosts.[102]
InMay2006acontroversyaroseoverVirginBlue'spolicywithregardtopassengerswithdisabilities.
FormerChiefExecutiveBrettGodfreyaffirmedthepolicyofthecompanythatpassengerswhowere"unable
tolookafterthemselvesonboardshouldtravelwithcarers".[103]AfterahearingintheAustralianHuman
RightsandEqualOpportunityCommission,VirginBluebackeddownfromthispolicy,agreeingtolimititto
passengersweighingover130kg.[104]HoweverthechairoftheACTDisabilityAdvisoryCouncil,Craig
Wallace,whousesawheelchair,wasrefusedpassageonaVirginBlueflightbookedfor8October2006.[105]
Inamediareleaseon29September,ACTDACclaimedthat"VirginBluehasalsorefusedtorefund$418in
faresfromtheflightforMrWallaceorCouncilstaff.Ironically,theyhavelistedthesefaresasa'credit'a
creditMrWallaceorotherpeopleinhissituationareprohibitedfromaccessingbyVirgin'sownpolicy".[106]
InJanuary2007VirginBlueattractedcontroversywhenitsstaffatAdelaideAirportorderedapassengerto
removeaTshirtbearingthesloganWorld'sNumberOneTerroristaboveanimageofGeorgeW.Bush.The
wearer,AllenJassonfromLondon,wasinformedthatthegarmentwaspotentiallyoffensive.Jassonhadalso
experienceddifficultyonearlierflightswithQantas.AspokeswomanforVirginBluedefendedthe
decision.[107]
InJanuary2011theairlinewasfined$110,000afterbreakingantispammingregulations.[108]Consumers
complainedtheywereunabletounsubscribefromtheairline'smailinglist.[109]TheAustralian
CommunicationsandMediaAuthoritysaidtheairlinewould"Engageanindependentthirdpartyto
thoroughlyassessitsemailmarketingprocessesandtoimplementanyrecommendedchanges."[110]
VirginAustralia'sboardpolicyofnotallowingmalepassengerssittingnexttochildrentravellingalonefor
fearofchildmolestationhasbeencriticisedbypersonsconcernedasactofdiscriminationagainstmen
(Airlinesexdiscriminationpolicycontroversy).[111]Followingapublicoutcry,thecompanyhasannounced
toreviewitspolicy.[112]
