Increase of Pills, Decrease of Food: The National Aftermath

The United States, a nation based on
monoculture, recently severely suffered
from the international blight. As a result, the
nations only food source has been
eradicated, and humans are now left without
fundamental nourishment. However, before
the United States was deteriorated by the
blight, the government developed a new
food source in hopes of finding
economically beneficial alternatives: a pill
that provides an entire meal in one capsule.
Yet, only employees of the government
were provided with these pills. Nevertheless,
now that the single food supply has been
destroyed by this catastrophic natural
disaster, the government provides only one
option for survival. All individuals must
now work for the government in order to be
granted with their necessary food supply.
Otherwise, United States citizens must cope
with the repercussions of malnutrition and
starvation.

On November 9th, 2100, the federal
government announced to the public that the
manufacture of food pills has been increased
in order to subsidize the eradication of food.
Despite the incline in pill production, these
pills will not be available to just anyone.
Now, in order to survive in society,
individuals will receive their needed food
supply through providing assistance to the
government. Therefore, along with the
announcement of the increase of food pill
production, the government simultaneously
announced the nationalization of some
industries in order to provide new
government job opportunities. Additional
government occupations will range from
military jobs to road building, and from
mining to manufacturing jobs. Individuals
must follow government protocol while
performing these tasks, and the main focus
of employees should be revolved around
improving the nations economic and
political status. If not, the government
released a statement saying: Individuals
who fail to abide by our job protocol will
face immediate termination and will not
receive their dose of GFU pills.
According to a recent poll distributed
by the United States Times, 90% of
participants stated that their biggest fear in
life is death. Therefore, not only does it
seem as though the government is taking
advantage of individuals following the
natural disaster, they are also issuing an
ultimatum that evokes frightening and
alarming emotions. Individuals now feel that
they are continuously living through a

life-or-death situation. Jamie Silverman, a
40 year-old successful bakery owner reflects
on the governments life-changing
announcement: I feel like now my only
purpose of living is to survive. It is
saddening, especially because I have done
everything in my power to set myself up for
a bright and successful future. However, this
situation has created a life where all I think
about is survival.
Though the fall of the agricultural
industry has significantly hurt the United
States, it hasnt been the only negative effect
on the economy. Grocery stores and
restaurants are shutting down, as they now
lack purpose. Over 30 states and 1,000 cities
have reported the complete elimination of all
grocery stores and restaurants. Furthermore,
the government has forced industries, such
as mining, steel making, and aspects of
manufacturing to be nationalized. This
allows the government to take full control of
various industries, which will therefore grant
them with the privilege to create more job
opportunities for individuals. However,
national takeover of industries hurts the
economy because individuals will not be
able to become entrepreneurs, and financial

benefits will go to the government,
rather than to the general populace.
Ultimately, the government will always win,
and the people must learn to cope with this.
the laws, and the individuals in charge of
employing everyone. Furthermore, the
government is now, more than ever, the
central hub of society. Everyday life is a
mirror image of what the government wants.
Ultimately, individuals must be aware of the
governments significant increase of power
and control.

Just like any life-changing event, the

aftermath of the blight and the governments
announcement of their new policies has
taken a toll on individuals and society as a
whole. Across the nation, there has been
long debate and discussion over what is in
store for this nation in the future. Although
it is tempting to blame the government for
the aftermath of this unfortunate
circumstance and criticize their lack of
accommodation for the people during this
difficult time, the situation is no longer in
the citizens hands. It is in the governments.
Therefore, there is nothing individuals can
do but follow government protocol or deal
with the deathly consequences.

However, what United States

citizens can do is become aware of the
effects, and prepare themselves for the
hardships that may occur. One major effect
is the centralization of government power,
as their abilities are multi-faceted. The
