Date of Lesson Taught: May 11th, 2017
Cooperating Teacher: Mrs. Ashbury
Cooperating School: Fairfield Elementary School
Time of Day: 12:05-12:55

1. What steps did you go through to create this lesson? With whom did you talk, discuss, or edit your
lesson?
In order to make my lesson go smoothly, I spent a lot of time discussing what I wanted to do with my
teacher. We talked about which class would be the best one to teach and how to approach them in a way
they would understand the concept of a composer and how compositions are created. I used Mrs. Ashburys
curriculum guide binder to give me the cornerstones, SOLs and objectives. Then, I took that information and
created essential questions. Therefore, I used what Mrs. Ashbury had for games which gave me the idea to
talk about John Williams. I edited my lesson with Mrs. Free to see if things were acceptable or appropriate.
2. How did the SOLs and Objectives help focus your instruction?
The SOLs and Objectives help focus my instruction by giving them structure of what to expect. It explained to
them what they would be learning and how to apply to the music theyve heard in movies.
3. What parts of the instructional plan worked as you anticipated?
The best part that worked exactly the way I thought was the warmup. We sung the Fairfield School Song
which is the song they sing at graduation. In addition, we sung Hey Ho in rounds so they can understand how
John Williams created compositions with harmonies and melodies. Therefore, this helped the students to be
comfortable and be engaged so when I asked questions they always wanted to share even if they werent sure
of what the movie was about it. They used a vivid imagination and created multiple visions.
4. What, if any, adjustments needed to be made once you began?
I didnt have any major adjustments except the game. Originally, I planned for them to play the game in a
circle but I changed it to Hand Up- Pair Share because it was much quicker and I was running out of time.

5. How well did you anticipate the materials needed?

I believe I had all the materials I needed. I didnt need anything extra or forget anything.
6. How effective was the assessment you chose to use? (If no assessment was used, what will the future
assessment be and how will you gauge its effectiveness?)
The assessment was very effective because I was able to hear their perspective of John Williams and the
different compositions he had. It helped me realize who listened and who didnt. The assessment showed me
how they connect John Williams compositions such as understand how the tempo changes or the mood he
set as the atmosphere.
7. To what degree do you feel that this lesson was a success? What evidence do you have for the
success of the lesson? (Hint: Student learning is the key to a lessons success!)
I believe that my students understood the concept. At the end of the lesson, I asked them what they learned
or took away from this lesson. I received great feedback such as they learned who the composer is, learned
how John Williams used a lot of the same techniques in his music and how it relates to one another, or how
they remember the facts I talked to them and they wanted to get more information on John Williams and to
see if hes working on more music now. In addition, I believed it was a success based on how quiet they were
because normally they are a very energetic class that loves to talk but when I taught they wanted to be
engaged and answer my questions while understanding the concepts that John Williams uses when
composing music.
8. How did the time spent preparing for your lesson contribute to its success?
The time spent preparing for my lesson did contribute to its success. I learned more about John WIlliams
myself because I had no idea some of my childhood movies that I love he composed. I was able to learn myself
and see different visions through my students imaginations/viewpoints. I was able to learn things through
Mrs. Ashbury has she taught me more about the compositions and how she played some of these pieces and
what it takes or the importance of it.
9. I spent time researching more into the 1920s which did help me relay the lesson well. I think that my
excitement helped the class pay attention more.
I loved the class that I taught. They were my favorite because of their overall vibe. They were so excited to
hear that I would be teaching them. It was the most engaged and quiet Ive seen them because normally they
always want to talk. They asked multiple questions and gave me multiple hugs before class ended. I believed
that me singing with them made them feel comfortable to do the rounds because the students knew they
werent alone. It was a really incredible moment when they completed the rounds and they didnt drop out
when they heard more than one part at the same time.
10. If you could do this lesson again with the same students, would you do anything differently? If so,
what?
Yes, I would probably change the game. I would choose a different game which was more class involved
together. I think they liked the game but they wouldve like to have more of a class game such as a jeopardy
or game show type of game. The students participated in the game but it was really easy and they still
wanted to talk about John Williams and listen to more of his pieces.
11. Any last comments/reflections about your lesson?
This was such a great experience. I think that the students learned about John Williams and his compositions.
They understand the different aspects of composing music such as articulation, dynamics, mood, and pitch. I
learned how difficult it is for the compositions and how music can be so different but creative.
