synthmania. (03/08/2014).

13 - Connects the bottom to the top (7)

The Channel Strip:

What are the two uses of a channel?

The two uses of a channel are recording and playback. (The top fader are for recording
and the bottom faders are for playback).

Furthermore on the left there are 24 faders and on the right there are 12 faders. The top
section of the pot is for changing the gain and the bottom section of the pot is for changing
the volume level.
BY: KATIE MORGAN
Also on the mixing desk press the line button, so the mixing desk knows that it is a line and
not a microphone.

What is Phase Cancellation?

Phase Cancellation, for example, if you where to record a snare you would has two
microphones. (One at the top and the other at the bottom), the top microphone will go up
in waveform and the bottom microphone will go down in waveform). So to stop this press
the phase button and this will make both microphones go up in waveform.

Also this will make the waveform the same or similar for both microphones.

What is a Low Cut?

Low Cut - This cuts the frequencies from 100 Hz (the lower frequencies).

What is a Noise Gate?

Noise Gate (Dynamics) - Threshold and compression. It tell the sound how to open and
close. Also, how to start and end.

What is Shelving Eq?

A shelving EQ attenuates or boosts frequencies above or

below a specified cutoff point. Shelving equalizers come in
two different varieties: high-pass and low-pass. Low-pass
shelving filters pass all frequencies below a specified cutoff
frequency, while attenuating all the frequencies above the
cutoff.

Presonus. (??).

What is Semi-Parametric Eq?

Sometimes called pseudo or quasi-parametric EQ, a Semi-Parametric EQ is a parametric

equalizer that has one or more features missing. This term is sometimes used to describe
a single band of equalization, where it generally means a parametric EQ that does not
have a Q control (the Q is fixed).

Sweetwater Music Instruments & Pro Audio. (21/02/2003).

What are Group Outputs?

Left Panning = 1 (Speakers and Panning)

Right Panning = 2 (Speakers and Panning)

Left is for the odd outputs.

Right is for the even outputs.

BY: KATIE MORGAN
Group input 1 is connected to input 1 in logic, etc.

What are Monitor Faders?

Aux sends may be used for two different purposes: to send signals to an external
processor or to send signals to a separate monitor mix for the musicians onstage. Pre-
fader aux sends are generally used for the monitor mix, because the channel faders don't
affect the signals sent from the aux sends. Any adjustments made to the front-of-the-house
mix don't affect the balance heard by the performers onstage.

Post-fader aux sends are generally used for connecting external effects or dynamics
processors--the signal is sent to the processor from an aux send and reenters the mixer
through an aux return. Each channel has its own aux send control, so you can adjust the
amount of processing. The effected signal will be raised or lowered by the channel fader.

What are Master Mutes?

Channel fader = solo, cut (mute) and master mute (M1, M2, M3 and M4). For example, M1
= Drums, press M1 on all of the Drum channels than on the other side press M1 to mute
all of the Drums and not the other instruments on the other master mute channels.

What are Auxiliaries?

Sound Mixers: Auxiliary Channels. Most sound desks include one or more auxiliary
channels (often referred to as aux channels for short). This feature allows you to send a
secondary feed of an input channel's audio signal to another destination, independent of
the channel's main output.

Useful information:

Analogue recordings sound smoother than digital recordings.

To turn a microphones sound press the button that says MIX.
Cut means mute.
BY: KATIE MORGAN

PFL gives you pre fader level.

REV - Reverb or compression, this allows you to fill from the bottom faders to the top
faders to add these effects in. These are known as the monitor faders.

BNCE = BOUNCE
24 outputs per mix.
The Live Rooms:

There are two live rooms, one near Studio A and the other one is near Studio B (see first
diagram - Studio Plan).

What is in the studios live rooms?

The Studio A Live Room contains the following:

Stage Box (see the definition further down)!

Drums/drum sticks

Other instruments ??

Different types of microphones, for example, Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphones,

Small Diaphragm Condenser Microphones, Dynamic Microphones and Bass Microphones.
(These microphones and more are in the cupboard next to the Studio A Control Room)

Different types of microphone stands, for example,

E-Home Recording Studio. (??).

Different types of XLR Leads, for example,

goldleaf. (27/12/2012).

The Stage Box:

A stage box is a rugged metal housing used in the audio

engineering and entertainment fields to connect microphones
and other sound equipment to the multicore cable. The entire
assembly of stage box and multicore cable is sometimes
referred to as an audio snake or simply snake. (Make sure
that the inputs in Logic are the same as the microphone
inputs. If, not there will be no signal, so this means no sound)!

Wikipedia. (First edited on 03/02/2004).

How do you undertake a basic recording (group outputs, soundcard and audio
interface inputs) and How do you route signal to the computer?

The inputs at the top of the patch bay and the outputs are at the bottom of the patch bay.

Furthermore the first 8 sound cards are known as group inputs (Group input 1 (input 1)
pan to the left).

Each channel has 7 connections, which are: Linin (Line In) - line
level source, INSSND - Insert Send
(Plugins), INSRET - Insert Return
(Plugins).

CHOut - Channel Output (put a mic

lead in the
9th CHOut
and than in
Logic set
the input to
9 as well),
TPSND -
Tape Send (information out to the
channels), TPRET -
Connected to the monitor faders.

BY: KATIE MORGAN

MON - Monitor (Monitor Input): On the right side of the patch bay
are the connections to the effects. So this means that the left side
of the patch any are the connections to the channels.

How do you route to outboard equipment after recording (the patchbay)?

Next put a bantam lead into the patch bay (plug

it into your chosen channel input), then put
another bantam lead into the patch bay (plug it
into your chosen effect) and then put your next
bantam lead into the patch bay (plug it back into
the output).

How do you route to a compressor whilst

recording (the patchbay)?

This is the same as whilst you are recording.

Only the microphone bit is different as you need
a microphone for this. (See above about the
stage box, as it will tell you about the stage box
and the microphone inputs)!

Signal Routing Challenges (the patchbay):

tblackwell. (27/05/2012).

BY: KATIE MORGAN
As you can see from the diagram above the patch bay is broken into sections, which are:
Mic Line Outs, Pre-Amp Out, Apogee Symphony Ins, Pre-Amp In, Apogee Symphony
Outs, Pre-Amp Out, Mains, Out Board Gear In, Out Board Gear Out and finally Pre-Amp
In. (Apogee - the highest point in the development of something; a climax or culmination).

English Oxford Living Dictonaries. (??).

If you remember these sections than you will remember the patch bay. However different
mixing desks will be different as it depends on what outboard equipment you have and
how you have set them up with the other things.

What is a DI Recording?

A DI unit is a device typically used in recording studios to connect a high-

impedance, line level, unbalanced output signal to a low-impedance,
microphone level, balanced input, usually via XLR connector.

Wikipedia. (First edited on 14/11/2003).

What is Outboard Equipment?

Musical "outboard equipment" or "gear" is used to alter how a musical instrument sounds.
Outboard, (external effects units) can be used either during a live performance or in the
recording studio. These are separate from the effects that may be applied by using a
mixing console or a digital audio workstation. (See the first half of this manual for more
details about the separate outboard equipment).

Wikipedia. (First edited on 12/11/2009).

Here are some pictures I took of the Outboard Equipment in Studio A:

BY: KATIE MORGAN
How do you spread your recording across the mixing desk?

Match the inputs/outputs on the mixing desk with the ones on Logic, for example, input 1/
output 1 in Logic is input 1/ output 1 on the mixing desk. This is also the case for the patch
bay, which will be on input 1/ output 1 like Logic and the mixing desk.

Normally on input 1/ output 1 you would have drums!

What does mixdown mean?

An electronic blending of tracks or sounds made to produce a recording. Verb phrases.

21. mix down, to mix the tracks of an existing recording to make a new recording with
fewer tracks: the four-track tape was mixed down to stereo.

dictionary.com. (2005).

How do you bounce channels or tracks?

Its simple! Add an audio track via Logic, then record the mixer output and finally bounce.

Click on BNCE (the top yellow button) on the

channel that you want to bounce and then click
record in Logic. (You can do this on multiple
channels)!

Bouncing is also known as a Ping-pong recording (also called ping-ponging, bouncing

tracks, or reduction mixing) is a method of sound recording. It involves combining multiple
track stems into one, allowing more room for overdubbing when using tape recorders with
a limited set of tracks. It is also used to simplify mixdowns
