Demonstration Lesson Plan in TLE

Area: Computer Hardware Servicing Date:

Teacher: Anawelyn L. Bacar Time: 1Hr. - Grade 9

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, 100% of the student with 85% success should be able to:
1. recognize the different network hand tools and LAN wire color codes.
2. showcase how to create a straight through or crossover LAN cable.
3. appreciate the application of network for everyday life.

II. Subject Matter:

Content: Creating Network Cable
General Competency: LAN Cabling
Specific Competency: Straight-Through and Crossover LAN Cable
Tools and Materials: Laptop, Projector, Cartolina, Marker, Chalk Board, Chalk, UTP Cable, RJ-45,
Crimping Tool, Wire Stripper, LAN tester & Poster(color coding for cable)
Reference: Technology and Livelihood Education-Computer Hardware Servicing
Value integration: Sense of following directions

III. Procedure:
A. Preparation:
1. Daily Routine
Opening prayer
Greetings
Checking of attendance

B. Presentation:
1. Motivation Activity: COLOR CODING GAME
a) provide eight strips of colored paper to the students
b) teacher will show poster/picture showing the first group of color combination for 30
seconds
c) each student will group the eight strips the same order as it was seen from the picture
shown for 30seconds
d) repeat the step (b-c) with different color combination

2. Lesson Proper:
2-1. Activities
Identification Activity: Network Hand Tools
a) display the different hand tool name on the board and let the student try to match it
to the actual hand tool [CAT5 (UTP cable), RJ-45, Crimper, wire stripper & LAN tester]
b) give the function of each hand tool
Network Hand tools and its function:

Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) Cable - most common cable used in computer

networking. Number of twisted-pair wires are often grouped together and enclosed
in a protective sheath to form a cable.
RJ-45 Connector - registered jack 45 is an eight-wire connector used to connect
computers to category 5 unshielded twisted pair cables in a network.
Wire Stripper Used to remove the outer jacket of the wire.
Crimping Tool used to crimp UTP Cable to RJ45 Connector.
LAN Tester - assists in the installation and control of networks.

Demonstration Activity: Straight through/Crossover cabling

a) integrate the motivational activity to introduce straight through/crossover cable
b) Option 1: show the video about network cabling through computer & projector
Option 2: actual demonstration of how to create a network cable.

c) group students and provide UTP cable to each group for a hands-on activity

Steps in LAN Cabling
1. Prepare all the materials/tools needed.
2. Carefully remove an inch of the outer jacket of the cable.
3. Untwist the pairs and arrange the wires based on T568A/ T568A wiring.
4. Trim the untwisted wires to a suitable length.
5. Keep the wires flat and in-order as you push them into the RJ-45.
6. Place the wired plug into the crimping tool.
7. Repeat all the steps with the other end of the cable.
8. Test the cable using the LAN Tester.

2-2. Analysis
How useful is computer networking in your life?
Which hand tools are needed for creating network cable?
Which color combination would make a straight through cable? How about the crossover
cable?
How to create a straight through cable? How about a crossover cable?

2-3. Abstraction

LAN/Network Cabling is the process of creating a cable which is used in interconnecting

computers. There are two types of LAN /Network Cable: The Cross Over and Straight Through.
Straight-Through LAN cable have standard color codes of T568A on both sides. The color of the
wires are White Green, Green, White Orange, Blue, White Blue, Orange, White Brown, Brown. It
is most commonly used to connect a host to client. It is used to connect computers, printers and
other network client devices to the router switch or hub.
Crossover LAN cables have standard color codes of T568A on side A and T568B on side B. The
color of the wires are White Green, Green, White Orange, Blue, White Blue, Orange, White
Brown, Brown and in the other side the colors are White Orange, Orange, White Green, Blue,
White Blue, Green, White Brown, Brown. It is most commonly used to connect two hosts
directly. Examples would be connecting a computer directly to another computer, connecting a
switch directly to another switch, or connecting a router to a router.
There are several tools and materials used in LAN/Network Cabling like UTP Cable, Wire
Stripper, Crimping tool, RJ-45 and LAN tester.

2-4. Application:
Directions: Students will create a Straight-Through or a Crossover LAN Cable by following the
steps for 10 minutes. (Teacher will observe the student as they do the activity for giving score)

Safety Precaution/Reminder: Avoid Playing around Use the proper hand tool
Always be on task Avoid unnecessary noise Be Alert
